Horses in residential streets

Why do horse riders think it is ok to go onto residential srreets ( not a through road to a field or anything) and let their horses shit all over the pavements and roads?

Horse shit stays around for ages. There was a big one outside my local Aldi. I was fascinated by its longevity.

They ride on the pavements by me, fuckers. It's like the wild west, people are dodging shit on the paths. But it's horses and you can't say anything about them because they all say put it on your roses

This reminds me of a local FB group where someone was furious about a horse's business being on a path between a housing estate and a school. There was a post at the back of her photo of the evidence. At the top of the post, cropped out of the photo, was a sign saying 'Bridleway'. Which had been there a long time before the new build estate. She got her arse handed to her.

I was in the park with the kids yesterday, in the play area that we often whinge should be fenced off because dog owners think that the sign saying 'No Dogs' doesn't apply to their darling because, well, they don't want it to. Anyhow, a women just rode round the play area on a horse, and away again for no apparent reason. We all took a moment to watch her ride away, said 'that was nice' and continued our day with a smile.
I (and the bloke I was chatting to) have no idea if horses are allowed in parks, but it was nice to see. She didn't allow the horse too close to nervous children, it was just like when you see a rainbow or something and all have a moment.
I want to live somewhere where the main social problem is too many horses!

Huge difference between horse shit and dog shit.

I love seeing horses out and about

Horse riders should pick their horse shit up - in days gone past a chap used to go round shovelling it up as it was valuable but now it is a hobby/pastime those enjoying it should pick their own horse shit up when not on a main road or country road imo

They could put it in a bag and hang it off the saddle

Report
JellyBelli · 28/10/2016 21:26

It's dangerous to dismount and dick around with a shovel and bucket. Thats why horse owners dont have to pick up after horses.

Don't think this thread has gone quite how the OP envisioned. Unless they're a goady fucker?

Horse shit is very good for roses, isn't it?

maddening,

maybe cars, buses, motorcycles etc could carry their exhaust fumes around after them in an airtight bag, too?

Oh no wait, that wouldn't be very practical, either...

maddening hang it off the saddle? and then when the horse takes fright with the giant 'shit' bag hanging off their side and clatters off up the road .. what then? Put the mangled remains of people mown over in the (giant) bag too?

....of course I'm being facetious ...but horses are unpredicatable, its already been said its not safe to hop on and off and wave round a shovel . ... for the sake of what, digested grass...

I agree, no 'shit' on paths but the road..... really, there must be bigger things for people to twitch their curtains over.

Well on our residential road, the horses are here because they live here. Three next door and that's just for starters.

I'm guessing op hasn't been to the New Forest where they wander freely (even in the streets and pavements!) I would suggest avoiding anywhere near Dartmoor / Exmoor or London (particularly near Buckingham Palace where horses are regularly ridden).

Oh I do love the outrage and ignorance of suburban townies who don't realise how good horse manure is for their gardens.

Report
sonlypuppyfat · 28/10/2016 22:09

Why are they on the pavements???

Report
Shadowboy · 28/10/2016 23:04

They shouldn't be on pavements BUT I have seen horses pull over into pavements to let car drivers pass when holding the traffic up. Or like in my previous post the girl who used to ride hers to her parents home used to pull onto the pavement to let the kids stroke it so the kids didn't have to stand in the road.

I don't agree it should be on the pavement but sometimes there might Be a reason?

OP do you happen to live in a village beginning with A? This exact issue was all over Facebook last week. Nobody was happy with horseshit on the pavement there.

When I was young, any horses down our road and there was a race by my parents and neighbours to get to the horse manure first - to put on gardens. Of course they are entitled to ride down residential streets FFS.

Have to say, I'd not be thrilled about that.
DS1 can be horrifically noisy when he's excited, and I'd be on tenterhooks about the possibility of him suddenly starting screeching or yelling for the most trivial of reasons, and spooking the horse.

I have told him on multiple occasions that horses scare easily so not to start shouting near them, but he's not good at remembering to keep quiet. Especially in an environment where it's usually okay to be louder, like a children's play area.

FFS you can't compare horse manure to dog shit!

Horse riders have every right to ride on roads so rein it in ( no pun intended) !

PickAChew · 28/10/2016 23:51

Most horse shit is indfinitely better than dog shit, but I do prefer it not to be left on the pavements and side roads. Thankfully, we have neighbours who run out and help themselves pretty sharpish!

Personally I think horses should be banned from public roads. Times have moved on. Large animals meandering down a street with traffic, only ends in tears. I've seen the results many times in my line of work.
Sweden are planning a future road system that eliminates motorcycles and we still allow shitting wildlife slow everyone up.

I have a dog that eats horse shit. I could hire him out as a street cleaner.
