Horses in residential streets

Why do horse riders think it is ok to go onto residential srreets ( not a through road to a field or anything) and let their horses shit all over the pavements and roads?

Where do you suggest the riders put the horse shit? Should they carry a bin bag and a shovel?

PlanIsNoPlan · 28/10/2016 18:00

Horse manure (shit0 is good stuff. I love to see horses on residential streets - a bit of our history trotting by.

scurryfunge · 28/10/2016 18:01

Horse nappies is the way to go Grin

Soubriquet · 28/10/2016 18:01

Would you prefer the horse to wear a nappy?

Meadows76 · 28/10/2016 18:01

We ride on residential streets because it's the only way to get to the beach

FeralBeryl · 28/10/2016 18:04

One of my fondest father/daughter memories is of driving up to a local farm and literally shovelling horseshit into big bags for his garden Grin
It is in no way comparable to dogshit.
How do the horses fit on the pavement? I struggle with a pram....

leaveittothediva · 28/10/2016 18:04

Love to see horses and riders wandering about, get out a shovel, and use this golden poo on your roses. They don't charge you. It's organic. Happy Days.

newmumwithquestions · 28/10/2016 18:06

I wish they rode down our road. I like horses. Maybe you could send them here? I am saving my chicken poo for one of my neighbours who is a very keen gardener so I doubt horse poo would last for long round here!

SerenLena · 28/10/2016 18:15

YABU. I would love it if I could ride on tracks and farmland. Unfortunately though farmland in general is private and I expect the farmers would take a dim view if I decided to start riding through their crops.
Locally to me there are pitifully few bridleways (and about half of what there is here is currently impassable as not maintained!) so when I ride out I'd say it's at least 90% roadwork. That involves going through residential areas where they happen to be on my route, and occasionally main roads though more often than not it's country lanes.
Horse poo is not anywhere near as hazardous as dog or cat poo, as others have said it is essentially mulched grass. It isn't a requirement to pick it up and I'm glad of that - logistically how do you think it would work? Should we carry a shovel and bin bag?

PinkSwimGoggles · 28/10/2016 18:18

they should clean up after themselves but I have yet to see it.

I'm usually quicker with the shovel for my garden anyway

FruJustFru · 28/10/2016 18:21

Didn't we have a horse shit thread a few years ago? IIRC, it went the same way, i.e. most of us remembering our parents - and neighbours - madly shovelling up the manure to put on the roses Flowers Grin

1DAD2KIDS · 28/10/2016 18:21

the trouble is horses just do it. Its not like you get much of a warning when they are going to dump. So if you on the path your on the path.

Its a funny thing I worked in stables as a kid. We used to pick up horse shit and throw it at each other. Totally cool with horse shit. Cat, bird, dog, human or pretty much any other shit and I totally cringe. Although I naturally assume I would be OK with elephant, giraffe or zebra shit. Maybe I should have got a job in the zoo.

RoystonVaseySmegHead · 28/10/2016 18:23

Really? How do you expect an 11-16 stone human to control a 100 stone animal on a road, that could spook at a leaf/puddle/yellow line because it looks suspicious, (they're big fraidy cats really) while picking up the completely harmless poo (it's literally just organic fibre) all while assessing their surroundings for kids on bikes/mums with prams, or people walking, as well as being on alert for a knob head who doesn't 'get' horses to speed up at them/beep at them to scare the horse or whatever reason they do it, AS WELL As carry a shovel and a bin bag after they get back on?! If you couldn't drive a car safely while holding a carrier bag full of shit and a shovel then how do you expect a rider to do it? A horse requires just as much skill to ride as a car does to drive... you don't just plonk yourself on go hi ho silver then hack happily into the sunset..

RoystonVaseySmegHead · 28/10/2016 18:24

rant over

LuluNTutu · 28/10/2016 18:25

YABU, I love to hear horses clip clopping past.

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 28/10/2016 18:26

wow op,are you usually this uptight??what harm does it do....like you say,its big enough. big enough to see and avoid,no?

GerdaLovesLili · 28/10/2016 18:26

YABU, We used to wait for the horses to ride along our quiet suburban road, just so we could shovel up the poo. Marvellous stuff for the rhubarb Grin

helpimitchy · 28/10/2016 18:29

Dog Poo = nasty yuckage inc. germs and parasites Sad

Horse Poo = nice fertiliser Smile

c3pu · 28/10/2016 18:30

Horse shit is a lot better for the environment than car exhaust, so yabu.

chickenowner · 28/10/2016 18:31

I love seeing horses around our village.

YABU

FabulouslyGlamourousFerret · 28/10/2016 18:32

I genuinely LOVE the smell of fresh horse shitFlowers

Farmmummy · 28/10/2016 18:40

I would just love local riders riding through my private land and destroying my crops... the seeds cost money, raising it to a plant costs money, fertiliser costs money, planting it in the field costs money, spray and more fertiliser costs money, wages cost money, harvesting it costs money. Oh look it's ok they get wrecked as long as that perfectly organic shit doesn't land on a residential street Confused

FruJustFru · 28/10/2016 18:46

Just found the previous horse shit thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2015408-To-have-just-shouted-at-a-horse-rider-outside-my-house Grin

letsgetcake · 28/10/2016 18:49

Check your paths, if they are footpaths they cant go down. Horseriders are only allowed on bridleways of which are becoming a lot less common. Any horserider would much rather a path than the road!

Somersetlady · 28/10/2016 18:49

I ride on the road and I would rather not!
Too many drivers dont seem to be able to grasp the fact that half a ton of moving animal that has a mind of its own should be passed wide and slow.
A crash would make rather a mess of the horse, the car the driver and the rider.

Horses are classed as vehicles so its rather naughty to ride on the pavement though!
