Just how bad is it to apply make-up at your desk? And what about cyclists getting changed and draping their kit all over the place?

Following on from the thread about eating breakfast at work, can we discuss applying make-up at your desk?

I have a complicated skin-care routine and like to have time for my various creams to sink in before applying make-up. I also find that I get sweaty on my commute (I'm unfit) or my make-up can be ruined by rain.

I get to work via a combination of very busy buses/car/walking. (On different days).

Does it matter if the office is open-plan or more private? Is it wrong to apply perfume? Most of my colleagues are other women, if that matters. Does it depend if it's full on contouring vs a bit of lipgloss?

Also, some folk cycle and change at work. The office then looks like a teenager's bedroom with clothes draped everywhere.

Many thanks for your thoughts!

Cool. Whatever.
Why are you getting so worked up about my post/s, though? Sounds as if you are on the defensive. You do this sort of thing, if you wish, but don't expect others to like it or approve.

sweaty lycra bunting GrinGrinGrin I am going to use that phrase at the earliest opportunity.

Mynestisfullofempty · 28/10/2016 11:39

OP, do you apply your makeup during working hours or do you get in early?

venusinscorpio · 28/10/2016 11:41

I couldn't give a fuck that some precious twat on a train doesn't want to "share my morning routine" and might think it was a waste of time my bothering. It's convenient for me to apply my makeup on the train and I will continue to do so. They will just have to get over themselves. HTH.

Maraschinocherry · 28/10/2016 11:51

Women putting make up on trains look absolutely ridiculous. How lazy can you be, just get up 5 minutes earlier. Some people have no manners at all. Strangely enough, they tend to be the ones looking dirty. Metro run an article a while ago, sharing photos of the most ridiculous passengers. One woman was shaving her legs.

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 28/10/2016 11:52

venusinscorpio:

No need to sound so rattled. Maybe you know - although you are not acknowledging it - that other people don't want to be faced with the prospect of you applying your face gunk in public.

There are public spaces and there are private spaces. Thankfully, most people are aware of what is appropriate.

No boundaries, it seems... The huge sense of entitlement is laughable.

Maraschinocherry · 28/10/2016 11:58

Some people standards are so low, look at the ones going outside, to school or supermarkets, in their pyjamas. The papers are regularly showing photos of women urinating in the street. This has nothing to do with age, it is just basic manners. I find SOME English women particularly bad. I haven't witnessed that rude behaviour some much abroad. Thankfully they are the minority, but they are a pain.

venusinscorpio · 28/10/2016 12:01

I'm not rattled. Just wanted to make the same type of PA dig at you that you did to others, sweetie. Judge as much as you like. You are entitled to think I have no standards and I am entitled to think you are a bit of an idiot who should get a life.

Sciurus83 · 28/10/2016 12:10

Blimey this got heated! We can't all be perfect all the time! I definitely find it easier to get everything done now my commute is 20 minutes rather than over an hour but sometimes it's more important to make sure you have all the work stuff you need ready or something unexpected takes that 5 minutes away and makeup's the thing you can chuck in your bag and do on the go. Live and let live people (unless someone is spilling makeup on you on public transport, in which case scorn away!)

venusinscorpio · 28/10/2016 12:11

Yes, I fully agree. Live and let live. We all do things that annoy the fuck out of others.

heron98 · 28/10/2016 12:13

I couldn't give a shiny shit if my colleagues were doing their make up or draping their clothes. It makes no difference to me. Not sure why anyone would care.

carefreeeee · 28/10/2016 12:13

Why do you need to wear make up at work? Especially if you are sitting in an office all day? Wash your face at home, apply moisturiser and lip balm if required, job done!

Cyclists clothes are tricky because they are saving the planet and may need to dry their stuff on a wet day. Should be hung tidily out of the way and definitely not smell. However there are probably other wet coats/umbrellas around too so can't see it's that different.

hollinhurst84 · 28/10/2016 12:18

Maybe because they want to wear makeup?

venusinscorpio · 28/10/2016 12:18

Why on earth shouldn't she wear makeup at work? I'd say the majority of women do, and not everyone is lucky enough to have flawless skin.

SuperFlyHigh · 28/10/2016 12:21

Maraschino Grin Grin Grin

I am actually rather pleased if I piss you off this much if I put my makeup on on the train.

Of course shaving legs on public transport is a faux pas.

Poppy - 'appropriate' and 'boundaries' - you certainly seem to love to dish it out - ever EATEN on public transport? that is not strictly speaking 'appropriate' and you are 'crossing boundaries' whilst doing so too. strictly speaking that is... Grin

SuperFlyHigh · 28/10/2016 12:22

heron - sweaty, wet, smelly clothes in an office where smells can travel at the best of times is a no no. Colleagues can see this etc.

I still think my other story of the locum draping his underpants on the kitchen radiator after cycling (y fronts) trumps all though..... BOAK Grin

venusinscorpio · 28/10/2016 12:22

I just want to point out to Poppy and Maraschino that I am lucky enough to have flawless skin and so I only put makeup on while on the train to piss people like that off Smile

venusinscorpio · 28/10/2016 12:23

Lol, crosspost with Superfly Grin

SuperFlyHigh · 28/10/2016 12:24

venus - I also am lucky to have flawless skin but I like to look polished for work - and also to count how many disapproving looks I get. None actually... Hmm

SatsukiKusakabe · 28/10/2016 12:24

I actually quite enjoy watching people put make up on on trains, it's kind of fascinating.

It's just one of the things I automatically do as part of my routine of getting ready, it would never occur to do it once I'd left the house.

venusinscorpio · 28/10/2016 12:26

I would rather have the extra 5 minutes in bed. I get up at 5.30 when I am in the office.

SatsukiKusakabe · 28/10/2016 12:30

If I had to get up at five thirty I'd leave waking up until I was in the office Brew

venusinscorpio · 28/10/2016 12:30

Superfly, they have too many standards to actually let their disapproval show on their faces.

SuperFlyHigh · 28/10/2016 12:31

Satsuki - that's the thing sometimes I have time to do all of it or part of it (eg foundation) but generally I'm lazy so prefer the extra time in bed. so kill me!
