Just how bad is it to apply make-up at your desk? And what about cyclists getting changed and draping their kit all over the place?

Following on from the thread about eating breakfast at work, can we discuss applying make-up at your desk?

I have a complicated skin-care routine and like to have time for my various creams to sink in before applying make-up. I also find that I get sweaty on my commute (I'm unfit) or my make-up can be ruined by rain.

I get to work via a combination of very busy buses/car/walking. (On different days).

Does it matter if the office is open-plan or more private? Is it wrong to apply perfume? Most of my colleagues are other women, if that matters. Does it depend if it's full on contouring vs a bit of lipgloss?

Also, some folk cycle and change at work. The office then looks like a teenager's bedroom with clothes draped everywhere.

Many thanks for your thoughts!

In that case Mara you appear to work in Snowflake Central plc.

"venusinscorpio

I can assure you I look incredibly cute and sexy when I tart myself up in public, dearie. I'm sure you look as dull and drab as you sound smile I don't cover it up, I don't wear foundation."

Wow! You are calling the poster "dearie". People have lost the "argument" when they resort to that!
The word always makes me think of the witch in Babes in the Wood.

SatsukiKusakabe · 28/10/2016 14:24

Oh men love a gossip about crap like this, don't think they don't Grin

venusinscorpio · 28/10/2016 14:29

Whatever you say dearie.

StrictlyPan · 28/10/2016 14:31

We talk about little else.

Teehee!!!!

Much as it is amusing to trade passive aggressive digs with you, I see you've found your level. Where are your standards? 1/10. I think I'm done. See you on the train! Smile

poppy gets a hard time on threads because, while some of her posts could be described as vaguely, er, antagonizing (and she's frequently accused of this), she refuses to back down.

I admire that (plus any thread she's on is bound to get interesting!)

My personal take on this: I don't wear a lot of make-up but I'm not confident enough to leave the house without mascara and blush - otherwise, fellow passengers would take one look at me and stampede for the doors, under the assumption that the Zombie Apocalypse had begun.

I once watched two girls on a train do their make up routine (sneakily, of course!) and I was fascinated. Better than a YouTube video. They completely transformed themselves, and that one incident made me curious to explore make-up a bit more; I now actually enjoy finding new products, etc.

I draw the line at sweaty cycling shorts on a radiator, though......

ItShould - not even shorts - it was worn y-fronts - men's pants! LUCK!!!!!

Strange that though Poppy et al - if I've ever spoken to men at work or anywhere else about this quite a few of don't have any fucks to give...

oh and I don't NEED makeup but I think a few people (Poppy and Maraschino?!) probably do need it... my makeup is purely for work - don't wear it at weekends during the day.

SuperFlyHigh · 28/10/2016 15:13

how are we vain, self absorbed and selfish??!

we just want to put on makeup utilising a timescale (on our commute) which works for us. some people read their kindle, some people are on their phones, we make up!

Vain? No - just taking pride in how we look.
Self absorbed? No - well I'm thinking about myself but also how I look to other people - eg polished.
Selfish? how the HELL am I selfish? Am I selfish in subjecting others to what I do? perhaps. do you have to watch? no.

unclench please

StrictlyPan · 28/10/2016 15:16

I don't see vain, self-absorbed selfish women on my train. I see busy women taking advantage of 40 mins of down time - to do something that harms no-one. Strewth!

SuperFlyHigh · 28/10/2016 15:17

Yay high five StrictlyPan Smile

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 28/10/2016 15:17

super Regarding men's attitudes - I agree, I don't think they give two shits. In fact, (and I do watch a lot of old movies!) I always though it was very Hollywood-glam to whip out a little compact and touch up one's lippy!

As for the Y-fronts; that's a whole different ball game (snigger). I can't help imagining there'd be some sort of....pong?

SuperFlyHigh · 28/10/2016 15:20

ItShouldHaveBeenJess

exactly - so Poppy et al would be quite pleased and I suppose have NEVER EVER touched up their lippy in public??!! in a restroom??

the y-fronts was a completely different ball game - I think we told him not to do it - whether he listened to us, I forget... I can't remember if they ponged - can only assume it was sweat and other smells from when he'd woken up that morning hopefully washed etc...

yeah there is a touch of glam around it. I also like the focus it brings, though seeing eyeliner and/or eyelashes being done in ricketty train points can be a bit Shock and viewed through "I can't bear to see this bit" fingers.

you're welcome, Super.

SatsukiKusakabe · 28/10/2016 15:27

You're on this thread...

StrictlyPan · 28/10/2016 15:29

I wonder also if it's a British thing? Do Italian/Spanish/French women get this much censure?
Suspect I'm over investing now in something I didnt even know was a 'thing' this lunch time Smile. Adios.

SuperFlyHigh · 28/10/2016 15:33

woowoowoo so you can dish it out to us makeup on public transport putter onners but you can't take it?! Grin

not being nasty at all... or personally insulting you - just judging you like you are me...

you can care for yourself what others think about yourself but please don't judge us.... well not me anyway! Because I can and will judge you right back.

If I ever HEARD anyone say your type of judgment re me putting on makeup on public transport to my face trust me you will wish you hadn't even said anything...

And like I said before Maraschino, Poppy and you probably do other things that I don't like on public transport, eg:-

eat food/drink (oh shit I drink tea in the morning - is that allowed?!)
play loud music through headphones where you THINK no-one else can hear but damn right i can hear.

anything else??

BerylStreep · 28/10/2016 15:38

I do make up at my desk, but I have an office to myself.

No to perfume - it stinks and makes me sneeze.

No to sweaty cycle gear it's gross.

I often eat breakfast & lunch at my desk though.

StrictlyPan · 28/10/2016 15:38

"No real man would be attracted to a woman he saw on a train trying to make herself presentable"

Really??

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 28/10/2016 15:54

I'm reminded of Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction going to 'powder her nose' - now that possibly would be unacceptable while seated on the Tube (bet it's been done, though!)

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 28/10/2016 21:38

SuperFlyHigh:

Where to start? (Rhetorical)
I do wear make up - for me and not for the benefit of an entire train carriage. Pride in your appearance, you claim? Oh - so it's a pride thing to apply it on the train...Hmm
As for lipstick, I would never call it lippy.
You do though. Figures.
