AIBU To Be Exasperated by Spelling Mistakes?

DivingWithoutANet · 26/10/2016 11:54

I can understand that once in a while spellcheck might confuse "you're" and "your", "his" and "he's", "there" and "they're" and retypes what someone wrote.

But some posts are just littered with these and other spelling mistakes with a generous sprinkling of "ur" for good measure.

Is it unreasonable to stop reading someone's post just because the spelling is awful? After all this is not a literary club so anyone can write how they wish.

OP posts:
ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/10/2016 14:11

As "to" is following an abbreviation is it treated as the first word or is the abbreviation counted as a word. I had treated "To" as the first word.

Enjoy the film

SporkLife · 26/10/2016 14:12

Yabu, for some it will be their second language, they might be dyslexic or a whole load of other reasons.

tibbawyrots · 26/10/2016 14:12

I only opened the thread to see if OP had made a spelling mistake Wink

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 26/10/2016 14:12

"If you work for me you damn well better make sure your work is correct."

Oh get over yourself. You sound like an office dragon. Work for you, indeed!!
Hahaha

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 26/10/2016 14:19

Most posters are not dyslexic or suffering as a result of no education or using English as a secondary language. Please note: the key word is "Most"...

DesolateWaist · 26/10/2016 14:19

I've noticed a lot of posters write swop on here instead of swap. That annoys me.

I checked on that once as a saw swop in a school reading book. Seems it is an acceptable alternative spelling.

Brought for bought winds me up. It's not a typo as I know a number of people who use it in conversation.
Ur for your bugs me too but most other stuff I can live with.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 26/10/2016 14:20

If Pedants' Corner were full of smug people like the OP, going around belittling other people, then she may well find it to be a happy place for her. As it isn't, could we please stop directing her to it?

Although, upon re-reading her OP, she may well find it useful to pop over there to learn something about the (not so) subtleties of grammar (I find a grammar error far more unpleasant than an auto-correct myself, but clearly the OP has different priorities) and punctuation. Just what did the humble comma ever do to you, OP, for you to have banished it so completely from your clauses?

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 26/10/2016 14:22

Tibb- I open all of these smug threads for the same reason.

It's so lovely to see Muphry's Law spring immediately into action. Grin

AmeliaJack · 26/10/2016 14:24

Poppy the point is that you have no idea who anyone is or their background so it's rude to criticise their spelling or grammar.

With regards to your other comment, I run a team so yes a number of people do "work for me". Having high standards is not about being a "dragon" it's perfectly possible to correct people in a constructive manner.

FoxesOnSocks · 26/10/2016 14:38

The effort that went into that OP is almost palpable. Every word and bit a punctuation carefully considered.

I don't think there was a need for title case in the thread heading. Sentance case is better because it does away with the concern about capitalising words like 'be' and 'to'. Title case with a mixture of capitals and lower case initial letters often looks messy.

maddiemookins16mum · 26/10/2016 15:05

My spelling has got alot (🤗) worse since I've got older. I looked at simething I'd typed recently and was shocked at myself!! I put a lot of errors down to phones etc. I find it harder to read posts if there is a lack of paragraphs, I struggle to read them, my head just gets confused.

I feel exasperated by my disgraphia also op, doesn't help to add your irritation ontop

PoppyPicklesPenguin · 26/10/2016 15:47

Screw dyslexics and their ham fisted attempts to fit in!

This in spades.

I am dyslexic, I'm also a bit of a stickler on my spelling most of the time, but if I am tired or stressed my ability to concentrate on spelling can go out of the window.

At work I'm meticulous with spelling on here not so much, you have no idea unless you have dyslexia how bloody frustrating it is to try and get the beautiful words you have in your head down on paper or in a post.

I've seen so many people distressed or upset to then have some "bright" spark correct the poster when the are already upset or frustrated on here it is really rather nasty IMO.

So yes YABVVU

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 26/10/2016 15:51

... not exasperated by your illiterately capitalised title then? I'm sure it's been picked up on.

I'm not sure what sort of person starts a thread just to complain about the spelling in other forum posts is, but probably a boring clot desperate for some traffic. Pathetic.

Reporting your post to go to pedants corner where it belongs lest you start some kind of rash of these.

hmcAsWas · 26/10/2016 16:03

PoppyPicklesPenguin - I agree emphatically. My dd's dyslexia has demolished her self confidence and left her with anxiety (mostly focussed around academic studies) - for which she is receiving counselling.

Consequently I feel something akin to murderous when I read ignorant opinions like the OP's.

I question OP's motives in posting this thread - OP must surely have read the numerous bun fights on this subject on Mn and can't be expecting this thread to remain harmonious

Bluepowder · 26/10/2016 16:25

I think it depends on the context. In a job, particularly in education, it is important to use good spelling and grammar. On a casual forum, where messages are more like chatting, it doesn't matter so much. Picking posters up on their spelling is just a really easy way to be feel superior. Far better to say nothing at all.

myyoyo · 26/10/2016 16:47

Op didn't come back anyway.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 26/10/2016 17:02

Too mortified by the 8+ errors of SPaG and style in her OP I expect.

Dontcha just hate it when that happens...

ghostyslovesheep · 26/10/2016 17:14

I have s specific learning disability that gives me two choices- spend ages getting everything perfect but forget what I was trying to say or get it all down and risk upsetting pedantic folk

Years of being crippled by fear of people laughing or making a snotty comment taught me to really not give a shit

If I spoke funny due to a disability I get you wouldn't comment op - but learning disabilities are still fair game I guess

But me 😉

ghostyslovesheep · 26/10/2016 17:15

See all the mistakes I just made - piss take away

SallyR0se · 26/10/2016 17:19

Some people just can't spell. I'm good at spelling & I have a good general vocabulary.
I can't count. I'm terrible with numbers. We all have different strengths, I guess...

FoxesOnSocks · 26/10/2016 17:39

ghostyslovesheep part of my job is proofreading boring documents, I read your post and picked out not one thing. You know why? Because this is an internet forum for casual discussion (as in not formal, there's serious stuff discussed on here) so I'm not looking for it. Why would I? My own attention to detail and spelling skacks off a lot too. There's times I notice mind, but I just carry on reading.

I feel a big 'whatever' to anyone who feels the need to pick up on and make a point about grammatical and spelling mistakes.

heebiejeebie · 26/10/2016 18:12

It's kind of you to let us know that you are more concerned with the superficial presentation than the underlying message.

LoisWooookersonsLastNerve · 26/10/2016 19:21

The op hasn't come back. Apologies to those over at Pedants Corner if she's over there....
