AIBU To Be Exasperated by Spelling Mistakes?

I can understand that once in a while spellcheck might confuse "you're" and "your", "his" and "he's", "there" and "they're" and retypes what someone wrote.

But some posts are just littered with these and other spelling mistakes with a generous sprinkling of "ur" for good measure.

Is it unreasonable to stop reading someone's post just because the spelling is awful? After all this is not a literary club so anyone can write how they wish.

OP posts:

Off to pedants corner for you.
But Please Learn When TO USe CapItAls appropriately!

Forum chat got a lot shitter once people started doing it on their phones. They don't even care if their posts are incomprehensible.

"My dad's worried he's got catapults. We told him it would be octopus, but he can't seek to remunerate and his doctor isn't avian to take his calls."

bolleauxnouveau · 26/10/2016 13:10

Grin Nothing wrong with that spelling though, is there?

AmeliaJack · 26/10/2016 13:16

Diving this kind of post really annoys me.

It could be read by some poor soul desperate for advice or support, who doesn't post because you have made them feel like they aren't good enough.

Because they are dyslexic, or have English as a second language or just simply haven't had the opportunity for a decent education. People in that situation are generally well aware that they make mistakes but find their writing difficult to correct.

So they won't post and remain unsupported because Diving doesn't like it.

In all my years on this site I've only found one post, one I genuinely couldn't understand. I closed it politely.

Pedants' corner...

...I have one tidy drawer in my house, the rest of it is a bit of a shit hole, when I get stressed by the mess, I can admire my one tidy drawer."

Comma splices give me a headache.

MrsJayy · 26/10/2016 13:26

I really struggle with ie words it is a hit or miss if I spell them properly I know it is basic primary school teachings but i never got it and its bloody frustrating.

myyoyo · 26/10/2016 13:26

Of course you aren't being unreasonable to not read a post that you don't want to read. Hmm
Did you really expect anyone to say otherwise?

(I'm not sure where the spelling medals are kept these days...possibly with the milk monitor awards.)

FinnegansCake · 26/10/2016 13:28

bolleaux 😬

Spelling mistakes don't bother me as much as bad basic grammar, e.g. "could of" etc.

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 26/10/2016 13:29

effect and affect
practice noun and practise verb
lose and loose
bear and bare
complement and compliment
discreet and discrete...etc

etc and ect

TheWitTank · 26/10/2016 13:31

YABU for The Random Capitals (shameful after a post slating people who can't spell or make the odd mistake).

"myyoyo

Ask any employer how much value s/he places on correct spelling. Hmm

myyoyo · 26/10/2016 13:37

what someone wrote

what someone has written

Wouldn't the second example be correct in the opening post?

myyoyo · 26/10/2016 13:38

Poppy that has absolutely no relevance to how people spell when posting on this forum.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/10/2016 13:50

Umm... hasn't the OP used capitals correctly. In title case you capitalise the first word plus all nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs but you wouldn't capitalise a short preposition like by.

Grumpyoldblonde · 26/10/2016 13:57

No, that's not correct use of title case.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/10/2016 14:00

Grumpyoldblonde
Please enlighten me. What would be correct?

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 26/10/2016 14:00

"Grumpyoldblonde

No, that's not correct use of title case."

Enlighten everyone, please.

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 26/10/2016 14:01

Snap.

Oysterbabe · 26/10/2016 14:04

ODFOD.
My mum can't spell for shit. She was never in the same school for more than 5 minutes as she was always palmed off on different relatives like an unwanted pet.

You know nothing about people's personal situation and really should keep your judgy pants to yourself.

AmeliaJack · 26/10/2016 14:05

Poppy I agree that correct spelling and grammar is important. I'm renowned at work for being a stickler with regards to both.

However people often post on MN when they are stressed or distressed, or simply posting in a rush on a mobile.

If you work for me you damn well better make sure your work is correct.

If you are my friend sending me a chatty email or asking for help I would never comment.

MN isn't work. So I wouldn't be so rude as to criticise.

myyoyo · 26/10/2016 14:06

AIBU to Be Exasperated by Spelling Mistakes?

Grumpyoldblonde is this correct?

Grumpyoldblonde · 26/10/2016 14:08

The Monarch of the Glen is a good example of title case. Op put To Be in her title. Anyway I'm in the cinema now about to watch Storks Grin

Bettybooop25 · 26/10/2016 14:10

I've noticed a lot of posters write swop on here instead of swap. That annoys me.

Why have you put so many capital letters in your title OP?

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 26/10/2016 14:10

I miss TES.
