Is this true? I buy 95% of my clothes from next and my son has always laughed saying it's a granny shop. I always thought it was quite trendy but then my trendy radar has always malfunctioned 😄 Anyway at work yesterday everyone was saying how they can't understand the appeal of Next and I noticed on a thread on here just now, hardly

AIBU to predominantly shop at Next at 35 years old?

I went to Next and I was not impressed. Very expensive, and drab.

Rolocookies · 26/10/2016 09:22

I wear a lot of next and so does DC, I'm 22.

fluffiphlox · 26/10/2016 09:24

It is a completely different kettle of fish from its original 1982 self. These days it's full of nasty, cheap fabrics. Their active wear is OK but most of it is horribly depressing. I'm 58.

hollieberrie · 26/10/2016 09:24

Sorry I also think Next is awful. Frills, bows, stick on diamante bits..Ugh.
I would never go there unless desperate. I prefer H&M, Zara, Mango (similar prices) or Whistles, Jigsaw, Hush, bits of Boden (if I'm feeling more flush).

Aeroflotgirl · 26/10/2016 09:25

boffin that is good compared to summer collection when I went in, it was god awful!

Thornrose · 26/10/2016 09:28

To the poster who mentioned paying for the catalogue. I recently discovered you can opt out of receiving it.

GreenGinger2 · 26/10/2016 09:30

Can't afford the last 4. H&M falls to pieces,is horrendous to shop in and rarely has stuff I like,Zara doesn't suit my size or style(not into nude as a colour or the silver bomber jackets I saw in there this week) and don't have the other stores.

MaQueen · 26/10/2016 09:30

20 years ago I used to shop at Next, all the time. It was a cut above regular chain stores, and the clothes were naice quality.

But these last 5 years I have noticed a real drop in quality (and everything is much cheaper, too). Everything looks and feels rather cheap, flimsy and nasty.

I rarely bother to go in now. It's a shame.

Callmegeoff · 26/10/2016 09:32

I want to like Next, I did read somewhere that it was the most ethical shop on the high street however I can never find anything that suits me. I do like their home range and childrens clothes though and Dh likes their jeans.

If that is what I am supposed to aspire to the you can forget it.

FlindersKeepers · 26/10/2016 09:33

Their international delivery is free and quick with free returns, I also really rate their fake leather leggings as they don't go baggy at the knees.
However, quite a bit of their stuff veers into Per Una territory. They do love polyester a bit too much. You can dig and find some good basics at a keen price, but you do need to dig.
And yes, 20+ years ago, back when they did more lightweight wool suiting for women, they were great. But so was M&S!

I really don't understand the 6am Boxing Day sale thing at all, but if I started a list of things I don't really understand which other do, it would be a big list!

This would look great in the staff room and over my hefty size 14 thighs.Shock

SuperFlyHigh · 26/10/2016 09:37

their Directory clothes I find more choice and far more on trend than in their shops.

GreenGinger2 · 26/10/2016 09:37

At the risk of sounding like my gran- £50 for something the size of a handkerchief!Shock

formerbabe · 26/10/2016 09:38

I like the underwear, perfumes and homeware. The kids clothes and shoes are really lovely, but I wouldn't dream of buying clothes for myself from there.

ChocolateWombat · 26/10/2016 09:38

I think Next has changed. 20 years ago it was quite trendy and reasonable quality. Prices in my mind,w ere similar to M and S.

Now, I think the quality is poorer, it's not properly fashionable but very middle of the road. In my mind, it is very similar to supermarket own brand clothes....but with more choice and higher prices.

So I think it is almost disposable fashion. They want people to be in there every couple of weeks or using the catalogue frequently, to constantly buy items they wear a couple of times and then bin or give away. In that sense, it's a bit like primark....but more expensive. Most of the stuff isn't the quality that will last you several seasons.

So, if I go in there, I will probably see something I wouldn't mind having and perhaps some basic items such as long sleeved tshirts - but I probably won't buy them, because I can get that level of quality for half the price in a supermarket....or I can get much better quality for a similarity item if I buy in the Boden sale, or with a discount code.

Basically, I think that at full price it's not good value in terms of quality for price. Items in the sale are clearly better value.

MaQueen · 26/10/2016 09:40

Back in the early 90s I can remember buying lovely, quality sweaters from Next for about £50-60.

It's impossible to pay more than about £30 for a sweater from there, now. And it will contain polyester.

RaingodswithZippos · 26/10/2016 09:40

My mum shops there and she is a granny. But then my sister and I also buy bits from there - sometimes they have some lovely work wear and summer tops. Children's clothes are usually good there. The menswear section is useless though. None of the male generations in my family ever find anything they like there - the summer range this year was straight back to 1984 and not in a good way, more a Kevin Keegan way...

ChocolateWombat · 26/10/2016 09:45

All shops have a target market. I think Next have gone from aiming at young professionals who want trendy but quality workwear, downmarket. They are now aiming at the lower end of the market - still people who are a bit aspirational, who want to have a constant new look and who will wear supermarket clothes, but somehow think they are a bit beneath them. It is very much a mid at a market of people who will and want to get new items of clothing on a very regular spbasis, with quality not being so important.

So, yes I do think the prices have dropped a bit. It is now a bit cheaper than M and S, however, the quality isn't good, so it's not great value for disposable fashion.

Alternatives might be H and M, Zara, Dorothy Perkins......think they are prob a bit cheaper and some of the stuff is better quality. I can see though that the online stuff is a big draw, because it is so easy and also so easy to return. That's where Next did well, because they got in quick with the Directory and Internet.

Judydreamsofhorses · 26/10/2016 09:47

Next is a shop I would go into if I wanted something like a black polo neck jumper, but it wouldn't cross my mind to think of it for something more interesting, and I'd never pop in past for a look round. I'm 43, and shop in Whistles, Warehouse, Zara, Topshop, ASOS, French Connection mainly.

rookiemere · 26/10/2016 09:48

I'm 46 and after about 10 years of not shopping at Next I've started over the last coy of years to pop in. I've bought some nice linen summer dresses and chinos and a couple of work dresses that I always get compliments when I wear them.
You do need to sift through a lot of rubbish but at about half the price of my traditional go to shops I.e. Hobbs and Phase Eight I'm happy to do that.

LadyConstanceDeCoverlet · 26/10/2016 09:50

I think it's to do with high street fashion generally at the moment. I find myself wandering round shops like M&S and Next thinking "I don't know, I hated this stuff when it was last around in the 70s and it doesn't get any better second time round."

megletthesecond · 26/10/2016 09:52

I'm 42 and Next looks dead frumpy on me. I did try a few things on but nothing worked. They also vanity size everything.

The only Next item I own is a 'star' jumper I bought in a charity shop and will do for Xmas.

BalloonSlayer · 26/10/2016 09:56

I stopped bothering with Next when I bought a lovey top there and saw eight, yes EIGHT other people wearing it on one day (to be fair a couple were a different colourway than the one I had but still).

I sent it to my sister in Australia.

I like their jeans if I happen to be the right size but for years the 10 was can-get-them-on-but-bloody-hell-they're-killing-me-and-I-can't-walk and the 12 was far too big so I couldn't buy them at all. Either they had sorted this massive gap between sizes the last time I went or I have got fatter/thinner.
