Is this true? I buy 95% of my clothes from next and my son has always laughed saying it's a granny shop. I always thought it was quite trendy but then my trendy radar has always malfunctioned 😄 Anyway at work yesterday everyone was saying how they can't understand the appeal of Next and I noticed on a thread on here just now, hardly

AIBU to predominantly shop at Next at 35 years old?

I'm 26 and shop there. However I couldn't find a whole wardrobe there. I choose some bits there, combined with some bits from new look, h&m etc. You have to be quite picky as some of their bits are just awful. The bits I have found there I absolutely love though and Wear all the time.

girlywhirly · 26/10/2016 07:55

I'm 58 and occasionally shop at Next for myself. I agree that it can be hit and miss some years, although I liked their summer tops this year, and last year I bought some lovely velvet harem trousers which look really good on. You do have to pick and choose.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 26/10/2016 07:56

I went in there yesterday for the first time in Donkey's years.

I found the clothes dull and boring.

I'm 48, I love clothes and think there are better places than Next.

DoorOnTheRight · 26/10/2016 07:56

Next stuff is 'invisible'. Totally uninspiring, bland, ubiquitous and for anyone who just wants to blend in.

I buy some stuff for DCs there in the baby / kids section but the womenswear is just so DRAB.

DoorOnTheRight · 26/10/2016 07:57

And as for the people who queue up in the early hours of the morning for the Next 'sale'...WTF HmmConfused

Pistachiois50pmore · 26/10/2016 07:57

If you put a gun to my head and asked me to be harsh, I would say it's defining characteristic is it's very square, more than it's for any particular age group. I imagine the people who shop there all have financey officey jobs.

I'm the same age as you, c'mon we were born in 1981! We're not old.

Enkopkaffetak · 26/10/2016 07:57

DS is 15 and Next is quite in for him and his friends. It is one of the few places he will get jeans from for example.

I don't recall the last time I bought anything from Next personally I find it a bit young.

Sheezus · 26/10/2016 08:00

I agree with Fenella, there's too much stuff on their clothing.
I haven't bought anything there for years either. Maybe the odd pair of boots.
I was given a voucher for there recently. I really had a tough time spending it. I ended up with a fairly plain top but it's shapeless really. The fitting seems to be huge.

GreenGinger2 · 26/10/2016 08:03

I bought loads this summer as did others I know. We were all saying how much better it is recently, more for women in or 40s. I find the quality is great compared to other more expensive shops. I have to pick and choose like all shops. Loved the longline tshirts and tunics I wore to death. Some nice basics( cardigans and white shirts)

40 year old women want clothes that fit, last, are flattering and suit work or casual. I find Next is getting better at delivering that. Bar jeans and PJs I can never find much for my teen boys( hate Next logo plastered on everything and brash designs) though . Ditto teen daughter. Both always wore a lot of Boden when younger, like plain but simple clothes. Next can be too blingy for teens imvho.

KittyAlPick · 26/10/2016 08:03

Interesting mixed responses on here. I find most shops are a mix of good, bad and hideous. I have some Next work shirts which are great quality and often get their shoes or boots. I don't like man made fibres much as I get electric shocks so that writes off most Next for me.

On a thread like this it would be interesting to know if posters hate a shop, which shops do they like.

Door, where do you get your clothes from that aren't invisible or drab?

Gwenhwyfar · 26/10/2016 08:04

I go there for trousers because the petite ones are the right length for me. The price is good as well, about 20 pounds, and means I don't have to pay to get them altered like I would if I bought them in H&M. I didn't know Next was considered boring until I joined Mumsnet. I suppose that says something about me.

Floisme · 26/10/2016 08:04

The grannies I know prefer Whistles.

herecomesthsun · 26/10/2016 08:05

I bought stuff in there about 25 years ago (am 52). I think I got the NEXT directory once. I am sure some of the stuff is cotton, but I have the impression of a lot of artificial fibres (might be wrong).

I think my daughter might be interested in looking there when she's slightly older (she's at infants school).

Ilovenannyplum · 26/10/2016 08:06

I'm 28 and not a fan

I love the children's clothes for my 2yr old and love the house bits but the ladies clothes are a bit meh I think

And I hope you're having a chat with your son about ageism?

PlumsGalore · 26/10/2016 08:10

I buy less from Next than I used to too. I found the same old designs and cut in different fabric come out season after season.

I can spot Next and Per Una in the street they are so typical in style.

I wouldn't have said it was a granny shop as such, but then my DM age 80 has just bought her winter coat from there!

lalaloopyhead · 26/10/2016 08:11

I used to buy the majority of my work clothing there, but not so much these days as the sizing seems completely off - I ordered a petite pencil skirt and it was longer than a regular pencil skirt that I had ordered for by much taller than me daughter. I think their vanity sizing has gone completely OTT, some size 10 dresses have been like tents on me and I am pushing a 12 in other shops.
I don't even bother with the sale anymore as they just seem to dig out really old random rubbish.

Soubriquet · 26/10/2016 08:11

I love Next for children's clothes

Hard wearing and not too badly priced on some items

I don't buy anything for myself though

MyGiddyUncle · 26/10/2016 08:13

I'm 30 and have never been a fan of next. I've had a couple of bits in sales, but generally I don't find the quality any better than Dorothy Perkins or Matalan for instance - just much more expensive.

I don't mind paying more for really nice bits or excellent quality items - but no, i'm not going to pay £25 for a vest top that would be £8 in DP for (IMO) the same quality.

GreenGinger2 · 26/10/2016 08:13

Yes all the grannies I know buy uber expensive clothes as they are the ones with money. That said my mum who spends a fortune on expensive clothes bought a few pieces from Next this summer and commented on the good quality.

I've recently started buying Sainsbury Tu too. The quality, price and fit are fantastic. Found some lovely things in there people have commented on. Tops for under £20 that really last well.

Never shop at Whitestuff now,too floral, bit frumpy and nothing lasts. Love PhaseEight but it's pricey.

I think women in their 40s/50s are overlooked in shops.

Cakescakescakes · 26/10/2016 08:13

For those who aren't fans I'd encourage you to go online and have a look at the footwear. I'm really impressed with it this season especially the boots. Plenty of things as nice as I've seen in House of Fraser, kurt Geiger, etc.

I don't think Next is grannyfied it's just super boring with weird styles and dodgy detailing. It reminds me of something someone in their 30s/40s, with a mousy bob or obvious highlights, still wears blue bootcut jeans with black chunky boots, working in accounts, living in Hertfordshire and loves X-Factor would wear and think stylish.

I'm no fashionista but Next is almost offensively boring. Their kids stuff is nineties crapola too. Boys stuff full of t-shirts with dinosaurs and girls stuff with silly slogans like 'princess' and sequins on.

cricketballs · 26/10/2016 08:14

I've been buying less and less from there; used to have a lot of Next in my wardrobe but as PPs have said a lot of it is uninspiring. Also think their work wear is not appropriate for my job (very thin material/low cut given I'm a large chested teacher Grin).

Atm I'm shopping more and more from Wallis and Principles (always loved Principles) via Debenham
