£40 for a cake and two jars of jam

End of a lovely holiday, staying in a little bungalow. On arrival a week ago we were offered a homemade cake by the owner (to be made after asking us what we liked) and asked whether we wanted jam. Said yes please to cake, and that we'd come back to them on jam. Cake arrived, was delicious and big, have eaten about half of it as just two of us. Two jars of jam also turn up in kitchen when we're out. Can't open the jars so just pop in fridge and forget about them.
This morning owners have popped in to say we owe them 44 euro for the cake and the jam
I know we should have asked how much at the time, I know I'm
going to have to pay them. But AIBU to say well bank transfer tomorrow, firstly because I've only got 35 euros on me as trying to run them down, and also so they'll need to email with the amount for each thing. I will pay, btw, as it's my own stupid fault - but I would be flagging the price when offered if in the £20 for a cake range. And they insist we take the unopened jam home - I may just leave in the fridge and ask for that to be deducted.

Well you didn't order the jam and didn't open it so no, I would pay for the cake now and leave.

No I wouldn't pay for the jam.

I would flatly refuse.

Pay for the cake.

As you said you should of asked for a price on the cake so should pay. But leave the jam and refuse to pay. You didn't ask for jam! Trip advisor.

They sound like they are doing the hard sell which isn't very relaxing.

I stayed in a holiday cottage a few months ago. The owner provided a pint of milk, a small jar of coffee, a small jar of teabags, a small jar of tea bags and a packet of naice biscuits. There was no charge for this.

If thoe ownder did not ask you if you would like to buy or pay for a home made cake then they're pulling a fast one.

I understand charging for jam but if you did not ask for it then it's dubious as to whether you should pay. If the jam is clearly unopened then I'd be telling them to piss off.

whenever I've stayed in cottages anything like cake or jam has been a welcome gift from the owner. This is terrible.

We stayed in a lovely cottage in Cheshire in the summer and the owner provided tea, coffee, milk and a delicious home made cake. Then later on in the week she made some scones and brought them on a tray with cream and home made jam. We were not charged extra for this.

The kettle broke and she dashed out to buy a new replacement straight away.

We have never been so spoiled on holiday in a self catering cottage ever.

We stayed in a holiday cottage in the summer and arrived to find a bottle of wine, a bottle of ape juice, loaf of nice bread, block of local cheese and jar of home made chutney on the table. All included in the price

I wouldn't pay for the jam... it'll keep so they can offload it on to the next unsuspecting customers ...

Did you know there would be some kind of charge for the cake or did you think it was a perk that was included ? I would still pay, but I also wouldn't be surprised if people just assumed it was included as lots of cottages do come with a little something as a welcome

We stay in lots of holiday cottages and more often than not they provide milk,home made bread and cakes and jam and it's all included. Birthday cakes can be requested at extra cost.

I would NOT be paying and I would be mentioning it on trip advisor.

i would pay for the cake at a push but not the jam. I would also post a review on trip adviser warning unsuspecting customers of the scam. 40 euros for cake and jam?!

I'd actually say you didn't realise that there was a cost for the cake, and that you didn't want jam.. Don't pay just yet, as this is a learning curve for them as business owners too.

I'd reply sorry but you didn't ask for the jam and haven't opened it, so won't be paying for that.

Re: the cake obviously you should have checked the price beforehand, but then to be fair they equally had a responsibility to let you know how much it was. I'd reply that you'd pay on this occasion but were surprised to find out how expensive it was and feel the price should have been flagged to you in advance as it is expensive for a cake.

This is ridiculous. Now you will start worrying about costs elsewhere and offend someone else by asking them "how much" when they offer you something.

It was absolutely not obvious that they would charge you. I would probably pay for the cake, refuse the jam and make clear I wasn't expecting to pay extra.

Yep I'm another one who's had freebie bread and cakes and baskets of fruit and homegrown produce in holiday cottages. I'd pay for the cake but not the jam and I'd mention it on Tripadviser.

Agree with lemon squeeszy, fairer to be upfront about the confusion and give them a chance to reply than to pay then leave a damaging review on trip advisor.

Tell them they should have made it clear up front it was not a gift, and you wont be paying.

No one could possibly charge that amount for cake and jam, surely ? Did she write it down?

Bizarre. Was there any indication that they wanted to get paid for it beforehand? Like a price list in your cottage or them mentioning it? Otherwise, I would have presumed it was a welcome present or something. I don't think I'd pay and I'd feel like they were trying to fleece me.

Ask to see their hygiene certificate if they are selling cake! Being offered cake by the host as a welcome gesture - included in the cost of the holiday - is one thing, but them selling cake requires an up to date hygiene certificate.
You say you'll need ot pay in Euros, so you / they're not in the UK - has something been lost in translation?

Reply and say you didnt know there was a charge for the cake and jam and whilst you have had the cake and will make a contribution towards it. But flatly refuse to pay for the jam.
I'd imagine there will try charge around €30 for the cake.

We have stayed in a couple of lovely cottages and had nice bottles of wine and a few groceries included. Not charged separately but included in the price no doubt.

I would've assumed it was free to be honest. We've stayed in self catering places with welcome baskets before, I would've assumed it was part of that.
