AIBU?

£40 for a cake and two jars of jam

End of a lovely holiday, staying in a little bungalow. On arrival a week ago we were offered a homemade cake by the owner (to be made after asking us what we liked) and asked whether we wanted jam. Said yes please to cake, and that we'd come back to them on jam. Cake arrived, was delicious and big, have eaten about half of it as just two of us. Two jars of jam also turn up in kitchen when we're out. Can't open the jars so just pop in fridge and forget about them.
This morning owners have popped in to say we owe them 44 euro for the cake and the jam Shock
I know we should have asked how much at the time, I know I'm
going to have to pay them. But AIBU to say well bank transfer tomorrow, firstly because I've only got 35 euros on me as trying to run them down, and also so they'll need to email with the amount for each thing. I will pay, btw, as it's my own stupid fault - but I would be flagging the price when offered if in the £20 for a cake range. And they insist we take the unopened jam home - I may just leave in the fridge and ask for that to be deducted.

Please dont send them any money if you have not already done so, if you find you need to justify anything, mark up all the items you left to a ridiculous degree and say it's a fair swap, if they push it ask then to transfer €20 to you for the mugs...

Cheeky feckers! Leave an honest review!

I wouldn't pay for anything as they clearly didn't imply there was a cost, and you refused the jam son it sure where they get off charging for it..

I'd mention in the review that if future guests accept the offer of a cake they're going to have to pay for it.

The more I read the more I am shouting do NOT pay these scammers a cent!

actually initially would have said pay for the cake only and not the extortionate jam. But because of their grabby rudeness, I would now say to pay nothing.
If I saw this on trip advisor I would totally change mind re renting the place for fear of pushy, cake forcing owners hounding me!

I don't even know what two of the cake ingredients are! I think "on yer bike" would be an appropriate response to requests for payment.

This is awful op, my dh and I own a holiday cottage and provide tea, coffee, fresh milk and a bowl of fruit. In the store cupboard there's olive oil, salt and pepper, a packet of herbs, vinager and ketchup. We also provide washing powder and washing up liquid and fresh soap. I can't imagine palming someone off with jams and an expensive cake. Believe me, they get enough money for your stay and can afford to be generous. I want our guests to feel welcome and to get good reviews. Speak to her and say you didn't order jam, also her going into the kitchen when you were out was rude. Don't pay for the jams and tell her cake was nice but very expensive. She's very cheeky.

Was it Lemon Drizzle Cake?! oh no a whole other thread

Transfer €12 for the cake nothing more, no more dialogue with them and leave them a nasty review via trip advisor.

Mean twats.

I wouldn't pay. And I'd make sure that I mentioned it on Trip Advisor. I'd also leave a note pointing out that it was disingenuous to offer a cake without making clear at any point that you were in fact ordering a cake which you would later be billed for, as well as pointing out that the jam was neither requested nor eaten, and therefore to attempt to charge for this is very dishonest.

Cheeky fuckers.

Yanbu at all, how cheeky, they should have asked whether you wanted cake and jam, and that there would be a charge. Tell them your paying for the cake, but you will leave the unopened jam in the bungalow for them, as you don't want it!

I would have completely ignored all their 'requests' and messages and left FA. Pisstaking twats. I'd be all over this on TripAdvisor, Yelp, what have you, about what cheeky fucks they are.

They're taking the pis big time. Glad you didn't cave on the jam. I think I'd pay for the cake too, but would leave feedback making clear that THEY should be clear about the cost up front.

Stayed on a Greek air bnb last April and the owner popped in with home made cake and pudding a couple of time s, no charge.
All part of the lovely Greek welcome.

I'd leave a bit of PA review. Nice place, but a bit surprised at extortionate charge for cake. Had to pay 30Euros, so just warning future occupants etc. Be specific about the cost. Jam is a reasonable price for home made jam (inc a jar), but no idea why cake is so much.

speculaas is a type of spiced biscuit in the Netherlands. Google shows no results for specoulass.

I think 'specoulass' is that biscuit butter stuff (which always makes me think of vomit).

That is so cheeky! I make cakes and for a basic loaf cake would never charge more than £5-6, depending on ingredients and size.

even worse that you left all that stuff, also that they are really pursuing it, if I was in their position I would be thinking, oops, should have communicated better (not that I would be charging that much for a cake)-
I think a poor review on Trip Advisor (and did you mention air bnb?) will make them wish they had not tried it on like this.

Sounds quite nice as a cake ingredient. But not worth 30euros.

I am Shock at the cheek of the cake charging. We let out a holiday barn and leave the following for our guests: a cocktail, tea coffee, sugar, hot chocolate, jam, bread, sausages, bacon, eggs, butter, crisps, chocolate, pasta, rice, tomato ketchup oil and vinegar, cereals and if it's a special occasion they get prosecco as well. Come to Norfolk 😊

We leave a welcome pack of wine, beer, cheese, bread, butter, fruit, milk, tea, coffee - as I think most holiday home owners do!

Idiots must realise you will post a review -lambast them- on Trip Advisor, mustn't they!?

Btw, very impressed that there was any cake left!! Cake Cake Cake Smile
