£40 for a cake and two jars of jam

End of a lovely holiday, staying in a little bungalow. On arrival a week ago we were offered a homemade cake by the owner (to be made after asking us what we liked) and asked whether we wanted jam. Said yes please to cake, and that we'd come back to them on jam. Cake arrived, was delicious and big, have eaten about half of it as just two of us. Two jars of jam also turn up in kitchen when we're out. Can't open the jars so just pop in fridge and forget about them.
This morning owners have popped in to say we owe them 44 euro for the cake and the jam Shock
I know we should have asked how much at the time, I know I'm
going to have to pay them. But AIBU to say well bank transfer tomorrow, firstly because I've only got 35 euros on me as trying to run them down, and also so they'll need to email with the amount for each thing. I will pay, btw, as it's my own stupid fault - but I would be flagging the price when offered if in the £20 for a cake range. And they insist we take the unopened jam home - I may just leave in the fridge and ask for that to be deducted.

Just seen your update OP. Definitely leave a Tripdvisor review warning others of this scam.

Meluzyna · 22/10/2016 13:36

Well of course there's no point in them turning up at the airport with the jam as you won't be allowed to take it in your hand luggage (voice of bitter experience: DS was forced to bin all his local goodies when flying out of Bordeaux - other regional airports had let him through with similar).

Are these rip off merchants landlords Spaniards or expats?

RebelandaStunner · 22/10/2016 13:37

Cheeky blighters!
We always leave basics in our cottage, including portions of jam and usually biscuits or nice chocolate. All part of a free welcome pack. We often get repeat visitors and feedback saying that they appreciated those extra touches.

TataEs · 22/10/2016 13:39

outrageous!

we recently rented an apartment on a spanish island and were left free wine, fruit, water and two massive sweet cones for the kids!

definitely post on trip advisor

PuppyMonkey · 22/10/2016 13:46

Was it a nice cake? Grin

I'd have assumed it was a freebie thing too, them showing off for their guests. How embarrassing.

Bit late now, but I'd have played double bluff and ignored their messages and sent a gushing "thanks so much for the lovely gift" note.

Fredmitten · 22/10/2016 13:46

I feel more bothered than I should because we've played ball with how they wanted paying - bank transfer - and I've left it clean and tidy (which I should do, but still), and there's 6 eggs, 3 yoghurts, naice coffee, 2 big mugs (I need lots of tea in the morning) and other bits and pieces left which I left in the hope they can use them. Supposedly the cake was made with love and passion, and I've also been sent a list on ingredients. Apart from our wedding cake it's the most expensive cake I've ever bought!
They're a Spanish/Dutch couple. No credit card imprint or deposit - maybe we should just have legged it Grin

That sounds like these people who hand you flowers on the street, and when you inadvertently take them demand payment...

Yes, you should've legged it!!

brightnearly · 22/10/2016 13:52

...the flowers, not the people...

...if you inadvertently take ONE...

BoffinMum · 22/10/2016 13:54

Total scam, that. Petty as well.

ImperialBlether · 22/10/2016 13:54

I wouldn't have paid anything, but would've left the rest of the cake from the point where you were told it wasn't a gift. They've got a nerve - $30 for an everyday cake?

Creampastry · 22/10/2016 14:53

Scammers..... leave a review!

Blu · 22/10/2016 14:56

I definitely would not pay for the jam. You didn't ask for it, you didn't open it, you left it behind for them.

PrimalLass · 22/10/2016 15:03

They are very cheeky. I'd leave a stinking review about it.

ClaudiaApfelstrudel · 22/10/2016 15:08

I doubt I'd pay for either the cake or the jam. Sure there is nothing they can do about it if you don't. They don't deserve to be paid and are just conning you out of money.

gratesnakes · 22/10/2016 15:33

I would point out that you thought the cake was a gift but offer them 12 as a gesture of goodwill and pay it by bank transfer. I would not pay for the jam as you did not even open it. I would not reply to any other msgs from them on the subject.

strugglingbutsurviving · 22/10/2016 15:35

OP, did you know there would be any charge for the cake when you arrived? They are BVU if that is the case, not you.

Fredmitten · 22/10/2016 16:00

Through security and celebrating with a glass of wine.
On whether we thought there would be a charge - we did and I had in my mind anything up to 20 euro for the cake and jam. The more we've thought about it the more ridiculous it seems, 30 euro is a huge amount for a loaf type cake anywhere, and it's clearly all very personal to them rather than being a business transaction.
Have not responded to any messages and the orange airline just waved our suitcase through which was a couple of kg over, so a bit of balance is restored Smile

CommunistLegoBloc · 22/10/2016 16:25

What are the messaging you? I must know!

OdeToAutumn · 22/10/2016 16:31

I want to know what flavour loaf it was.... not that any loaf style cake is worth 30 euros !!

Fredmitten · 22/10/2016 16:42

A normal size cake with two eggs is 22 euro according to the what's app messages. I've copied the u gradients message below - on the decoration point, it wasn't extravagantly iced, there was (I think) a heart shape cooked into it. And clearly, on a beach type holiday I'm not too worried about the decoration on a cake!
Your cake had 4 ingrendient more than basic, nuts, sesamun pits, chocolate and specoulass
And I did special decoration for you

YouHadMeAtCake · 22/10/2016 16:44

Do they have other reviews about this sort of thing OP?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/10/2016 16:47

£20 for a cake Shock

Fredmitten · 22/10/2016 16:54

Nothing - only 4 trip advisor reviews and a handful on airbnb - all good. One mentions how good the cake is!
I may be a little paranoid but didn't feel like the island was loving the brits - may be that it's mainly Dutch and German visitors, may also be a bit of post brexit felling. May also not be a thing at all except for in my head Grin

How much would the cake have been if it were baked without love?
