Ok do I start this post with a childhood disclaimer, we never went guising as children which is what we call it in Scotland as my mother felt it was begging.. prob cos the old tradition was to do a turn ( I.e. Do a performance in some sort and ask for £).. so I see on a local parenting site a query from an American asking where in the city I'm from there are American style or friendly dot to door things for Halloween for her snowflake's first Halloween Ainu to say if you want you own traditions Cool but don't expect them to exist here ... I think her post and the way she assumed that American cultre would be repropriated annoyed me..

The horror, the horror!

I don't have a problem with that. But to say that it hasn't been heavily Americanised is a denial of the bleeding obvious.

I love having local kids coming round to ours for trick or treating. I love seeing the smiles on their faces when they get the sweets, especially the tiny kids. However I hate people who come from outside the neighbourhood because our street is particularly well known to be good pickings in Hallowe'en (!) I also hate people who are quite happy to have their kids knock your door but hide behind the sofa when other people's kids come to theirs. If you can't or won't reciprocate then don't send your kids.

My neighbourhood goes all out.
Houses decorated, front gardens turned into graveyards, house owners dressed up and out front ready to greet.
Some houses even have a street party and have a BBQ going.
My kids get full on party bags filled with crap wonderful toys.

We all abide by the rules of no pumpkins - no knocking.

Just want to point out that Halloween is not American - it went over with the first British settlers from here. The scots shaped the foundations of modern Halloween with Samhain.

Done here since I was a child many, many years ago-boo so nothing new about it. Only difference is how big it's got but then the same could be said for the art of decorating outside your house for Christmas.
YABU, stop being mardy.
Oh & where are the witch thingys MNHQ? Hmm
