To be annoyed that so many English folk don't watch Still Game

Considering how many apparently watch the absolute shit that is Mrs Brown's Boys.

9.30 tonight by the way. It's magnificent and the new series shows it hasn't lost anything with age either!

Omg how could i forget garreh and his cheesy pasta and chips please cheffy Grin

GreatFuckability · 21/10/2016 20:53

Well, as us welsh folk aren't English, we have no opinion on this.

bumblebee50 · 21/10/2016 20:53

I adore Still Game - I want to be just like ISA when I'm a pensioner (minus the cleaning the corner shop). Brilliant characters.

Canyousewcushions · 21/10/2016 20:56

I'm English but lived in Scotland for 11 years now.

Someone showed us still game and waxed lyrical about it when we fist moved up. We didn't even crack a smile, thought is was just weird and people must just be watching it to support Scottish TV.

Tried it again in the last couple of years. So funny I laughed my way through it and am now loving the new series.

The difference? I'd lived in Scotland for long enough to really get the culture and the Scottish sense of humour. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just that the humour doesn't work for most English people so they struggle to see it as genuinely funny. Which, as a naturalised Scot, I now think it is!!

ScottishSmegHead · 21/10/2016 20:56

The greatest programme on tv!! This series has been bloody brilliant so far, I'm freakin delighted it's back Grin

missingmumxox · 21/10/2016 20:57

I don't like Mrs Browns boys and I find still game pure shite, my husbands Scottish and he, his family, his friends find it the most hysterical thing ever, whilst I sit there stone faces just not getting it.
I just think it is like a fine wine exceptional at home but just doesn't travel well.

FlyingElbows · 21/10/2016 20:57

Still Game is not great and I don't really understand why you'd encourage English people to watch it. It's mildly amusing and cukturally relevant to people mostly in the West of Scotland. It's like a not as good Rab C. Those of you with kids old enough to remember "Granny Murray" from whatever that shite was with pink taxi in it too, she's in it playing a woman decades older than she is. It's a bit shit unless you find slightly sweary pensioners and dodgy run down bits of Glasgow amusing. Don't knock yersel oot trying to find it.

Meeep · 21/10/2016 21:00

I'm English.

I watch Still Game and I even went to see the live show before they brought it back.

I wouldn't get someone to watch a new episode on tonight though. What's the point without the history? Start from the start.
I wouldn't say it was crude at all - do I just not notice it?? I like it because it's sort of cheeky and melancholy!

Twinchaos1 · 21/10/2016 21:02

My DH loves it, he is English but I think having a Scottish wife helped him get into it. Tho to be fair it doesn't need the level of translation that Rab C Nesbitt used to.

mrwalkensir · 21/10/2016 21:09

south coast here - caught it a week ago and we were going to turn over...then really rather enjoyed it. used to love Rab

Longdistance · 21/10/2016 21:09

I've watched the old series from about 10 years ago, and I'm English so nerr 😛

Haven't watched this last lot, as quite frankly I don't have the time to watch TV.

SlipperyJack · 21/10/2016 21:12

I'm English and I've watched it for ages!

SansaClegane · 21/10/2016 21:12

I'm in SE England and I love it! have to put subtitles on though

Mumberjack · 21/10/2016 21:15

I love Still Game and know so many people who are similar to the characters. There's a lot of heart and pathos with the laughs.

Scot Squad and Gary Tank Commander are sillier but still great fun.

Now, Burnistoun and Limmys Show, I'd be intrigued how many English people get them...!

hotdiggedy · 21/10/2016 21:19

Its fine to watch but Scotch and Wry was better. Was Rab better? i cant remember!

anonymice · 21/10/2016 21:22

I had no idea it was on again. Thanks OP you have made our day in the West Midlands Smile. Off to the Clansman. Can't remember what it's called now...

legotits · 21/10/2016 21:24

I'm Yorkshire Mumber and we like to make a point of hating other people's comedy Grin

I thought at the time that Gary and his pals should be shown all over, silly comedy that you can snigger at is lacking lately it all has a point that I miss.

derxa · 21/10/2016 21:24

I love it. The men in it can be found in any Scottish town. Isa Grin

PurpleAlerts · 21/10/2016 21:25

Loved the original series' of Still Game- was very happy to see a new set of episodes! I have loaded them up on my I pad to watch on holiday this week!

iwouldgoouttonight · 21/10/2016 21:34

We found it accident on trawling through the Freeview channels a couple of years ago, think it was on Alba? Absolutely loved it, and was pleasantly surprised to see it moving to prime time BBC. I've not found this series quite as good though. Still enjoying it though. And you can't even compare it to the shite that is MBB.

Cellardoor23 · 21/10/2016 22:02

I like still game, I'm watching it now! To be honest I hadn't heard of it until my DM introduced me to it. I was born in England, but my family are Scottish. I like it.

I'm not a fan of Mrs Browns Boys though.

SoleBizzz · 21/10/2016 22:05

I live Still Game. I'm English.

MrsBernardBlack · 21/10/2016 22:09

Loathe MBB with a passion, but quite like Still Game.

Fags, Mags and Bags on Radio 4 is better though. Wall of crisps!

DramaInPyjamas · 21/10/2016 22:18

My son calls me Isa! He's just started watching, it's great seeing him watch for the first time, (I have all the DVDs, so have seen each episode several times) all series are on Netflix if anyone's looking to watch it from the start.

MrsBernardBlack Fags, Mags And Bags is brilliant. I wish they'd make that a TV series.

BBC England tried to make their own version of Still Game - called The Old Guys..Confused

FrazzleM · 21/10/2016 22:22

I live in the far north of Scotland. I've never found it funny.

Might give it another go though!
