To buy an old Silvercross Heritage pram?

Yes, I know they are totally impractical and not at all suited to modern life. I wouldn't be relying on it for everyday use and realise I'm going to need something else more suitable too.

Yet I've dreamed of having one ever since I was a little girl. I have the money saved. It has taken a very long time to get pregnant and this would feel like such a wonderful celebratory gift to myself.

DH, having long known of my dream, is saying now that the time has at last come, 'Oh but you don't really want one do you?!!'

Have you actually got the space in the house for it or will you be tripping over it bearing in mind that you'll also have another more practical pram/pushchair too?

If it's your money that's saved (rather than joint money) and you can store it without inconveniencing your DH then go for it :)

You'd be hard pressed getting it on the bus or in your car but you can use it instead of a moses basket so you'd get quite a bit of use of it

Thanks Potato. Yes, space not an issue (not 'cos we're minted or anything but we live in the middle of nowhere where land is relatively cheap). Our 'something more practical' is a Maclaren Quest so doesn't take up much space at all and in practice will probably mostly live in the boot if the car.

Norah yes, I had been thinking about using the carry it like a Moses basket.

If you can keep it in the house it will be fantastic for getting the baby to sleep. You don't have to wheel it around, you just sit next to it and jiggle violently bounce it. Well worth the money.

Go for it Smile my mum has one from when I was little, I've been using it for my DC when I visit her. It's great if you are just going for a walk down the road, the suspension is pretty impressive!

In that case I'd through caution to the wind and buy one. Then on the baby's first birthday you can laugh at yourself for having only used it three times Grin The baby can nap in it in the house for the first couple of months if nothing else

I'll happily laugh at myself if necessary. It will look great in the photos which we'll hopefully treasure forever and I hear they hold their value very well.

I had one; didn't use it much but loved it.

I bought it on ebay and later sold it on ebay for a higher price, so a good investment!

I would wait till the baby arrives and see how you cope. I was so tired I couldn't appreciate anything like that and just wanted everything as easy as possible. If you still want one when the baby arrives then why not!

I got a Silver Cross Sleepover Elegance pram as a compromise. It has the beautiful suspension and look of an old style one, but modern conveniences like a fold down chassis and the Silver Cross car seat fits onto it. It was fantastic for getting my DS to sleep and the carry cot has a vent in the bottom which means it's safe to use as an overnight Moses basket (you can even buy a special rocking base for it).

Do it I regret never doing this. I so wanted one and even found one at a NCT sale for a reasonable price but didn't do it.. I really regret it. It was letting go of a dream.

I used the Marmet pram that my mum had kept from when I was a baby - it was a godsend for mine when they wouldn't sleep and I could leave them outside in the garden in all weathers as it was so snug and warm and sheltered with the deep sides and huge hood Smile

I walked miles with it around the large village I lived in and when baby number 2 came along, number 1 had the seat on the front when he was bored with walking Smile

I had one for DS and it was fab. I used it nearly every day because we went for walks in the park, walked to the local shops, the library, etc. Be prepared for lots of people chatting to you about it. I don't think I ever went out without someone stopping me to compliment the pram and the baby but it was primarily the pram that caught their attention Grin

I have a marmet it's about 30yo and fantastic. I always get stopped when I'm out walking and people even shout out their window to compliment it!! Sends dd off to sleep with wonderful suspension and she can sit in it and play while I'm doing things in the house!

If I had the money and space, my dream is a silver cross balmoral (I 'tried' one on display in John Lewis, and think that's as close as I'll ever get to pushing one). I settled for the pioneer instead. But if you have the money and space then go for it.
