To do a straw poll on whether you're happy with where Brexit is heading?

Bearbehind · 16/10/2016 16:57

This isn't about the whys and wherefores of how we got here but, since no one I speak to IRL is happy with the path Brexit is leading us down and I've just seen a poll in the Metro strongly in favour of abandoning Brexit it got me wondering how wide spread it is.

This isn't supposed to be an argument thread or even how you voted, just Are you happy heading towards a hard Brexit

Yes or No

I think one of the reasons people are so anxious about Brexit is that the government STILL seems to have no inkling of a plan. I'm a remainer. IMO for Brexit to work we need someone who :
(a) is willing to acknowledge/reassure the millions of people who did not vote to leave, rather than come out with dismissive soundbites like 'the people have spoken'
(b) listens to experts' concerns and is prepared to consider all views and options, rather than come out with waffle like 'Brexit means Brexit'
(c) is reflective, responsive and adaptable
(d) understands that migrants are people, not bargaining chips
(e) is inspiring and visionary
(f) does not insult almost half the voting population by calling them 'unpatriotic', 'elitist' etc.
I can't think of anyone in the government that meets any of those criteria, so I shall continue to be concerned about it.

ClaudiaApfelstrudel · 17/10/2016 11:08

surferjet perhaps you could enlighten us as to how we are 'controlled' by Brussels?

Doobigetta · 17/10/2016 11:12

Voted out. Living abroad, am paid in foreign currency so it's happy days. I was not born in the UK and only moved there as a teen after my home country collapsed and we were no longer welcome. All this moaning really gets on my nerves. I'm thinking of the people of Mosul today. Not worrying about some scare mongering rubbish. The U.K. is strong and it always will be, that is why people risk their lives to get there.

So you took what you wanted from the UK when it suited you, fucked off, did your bit to prevent others from benefiting from the same, and you still think you have the moral high ground? You're a fine piece of work, aren't you?

Bearbehind · 17/10/2016 11:34

I make it

143 no
19 yes

surfer could you explain why you think MN is pro EU?

Although we're not talking about a big survey, nearly 90% of people think the opposite of you on here.

Surely you can see that that means your fluffy cloud isn't quite what you think it is?

Er no Doobig, people from non EU ex colonial countries like me, are now more likely to get into the UK, as highly skilled migrants. Genuine refugees will also still be welcome I'm sure. I didn't vote leave on the immigration issue, obviously. In December, when the Italians vote out and Deutsche Bank needs bailing out, the U.K. will be fine and the EU will implode. My mother's non British ancestors fought on the side of the UK in both world wars so please don't patronise me for having a more Global view. I'm supporting the UK, my work brings money into the UK economy, I'm not sitting moaning and bringing it all down.

Greenifer · 17/10/2016 11:58

No! I genuinely can't understand what is in it for us.

smallfox2002 · 17/10/2016 12:03

If the EU implodes the UK will be far from fine, it will cause an economic crash that will make the last one look like a walk in the park.

If deutche bank needs bailing out, this isn't Lehman and it will happen. If Deutche was allowed to collapse again it would take the world with it.

Oh and we were exempt from having to take part in any bailouts as we were outside the eurozone. However there are many analysts who now think that a collapse is not imminent anymore and the share price is slowly recovering.

What was your risk/probability analysis for the UK leaving

Oh and your still wrong on non EU ex colonies being more likely to get in.

Lightsoffplease · 17/10/2016 12:07

No

SallyMcgally · 17/10/2016 12:14

Genuine refugees will also still be welcome I'm sure.

UK's record for taking in refugees is pretty shoddy, compared to other wealthy countries, such as Germany. I suspect few other people would share your certainty that we'll be making refugees feel welcome. Theresa May's attitude towards people risking their lives on the Mediterranean doesn't suggest somebody who's seeking to make such people feel welcome.

Saltedcaramel2016 · 17/10/2016 12:14

No - even the leave campaign said we would have access to the single market, giving Norway etc as examples, but we don't seem to be following that course!!! So surely this won't be what a lot of leave voters were voting for either.

IceBeing · 17/10/2016 12:21

No

I actually won't have massively minded a step out of EU to 'take democratic control of our own laws', though I would have preferred not, but here we are a few months later with the entire strategy for the future of our country being decided by a single unelected prime minister who has decided it would be better if she not only makes all the decisions by herself, but won't even tell the rest of the elected representatives of the people what she is doing.

Doesn't look like democratic power to me.

MagikarpetRide · 17/10/2016 12:33

Genuine refugees will also still be welcome I'm sure.

Like the unaccompanied children in Calais. They're being welcomed with open arms right now. Confused

AmazingDisgrace · 17/10/2016 12:42

No. I voted to remain and I'm terrified at the way this is going and genuinely fearful about the level of xenophobia and racism pouring out at the moment.

smallfox2002 · 17/10/2016 12:48

To the PP who said that they thought former commonwealth citizens would have more chance of getting in.

You are a prime example of how the brexit campaign worked, they made promises you liked the sound of, so you voted for them.

It just won't happen, the same standards will be applied. They aren't going to lower one type of immigration to have another ( the larger element) increase.

Elendon · 17/10/2016 12:51

The Italians are voting on constitutional reform

albertcampionscat · 17/10/2016 12:52

Fuck no.

Ta1kinpeece · 17/10/2016 12:54

Liam Fox talks about joining the WTO
without understanding that an application by England to join has to be approved by every one of the 168 member countries (including the EU) and that any one of them can veto it

sounds like a recipe for disaster

shovetheholly · 17/10/2016 12:56

Absolutely, definitely NOT.

I think there are opportunities in any situation, even dark times, but the way this is shaking out looks very bad indeed.

gatoerato · 17/10/2016 12:58

my oh my ..
so many people here have;

  1. not done research and so whine because things don't run as they expect
  2. enjoy whining because they didn't get their way
  3. whine for sporting reasons ... its what they do ...
  4. whine because they are spineless and don't understand these things take time
  5. whine because they offer no intellectual discussion on the issue and feel the need to cover up
  6. whine because they hate, and hate because they don't know, and don't know because they are lazy .... so
Cheer up you lot - at least the socialists aren't in power.... Wine
GinIsIn · 17/10/2016 13:01

gato - oh please do feel free to enlighten us with this research. I can only assume that you can't have RTFT because that is what we are asking for - some shred of concrete research and evidence!!

twofingerstoGideon · 17/10/2016 13:06

gat what a typical leaver's response: vacuous and uniformative. Just full of accusations of moaning/spinelessness etc. You forgot to call us traitors, by the way.
'Whining because you hate' is a relatively novel accusation, though. What is is that we hate? Have you actually thought this through?

smallfox2002 · 17/10/2016 13:10

Pathetic response Gat.

I challenge you on your research point.

But hey at least those of us that are complaining can use capital letters at the start of sentences.

Elendon · 17/10/2016 13:13

Gato, Please show us the evidence on how it's good for the UK of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to leave the EU. I want to know how this will prosper me and my family. Please.

Yes I just want the frigg out of the failed project and don't want to be lead by a drunk

surferjet · 17/10/2016 13:16

surfer could you explain why you think MN is pro EU?

Eh, because,

143 no
19 yes

The vast majority of the 143 voted remain, ( if not all of them )
So the facts are staring you in the face.
