Even though I have a maths degree!
He is 10 and in year 6. I can find a 'cryptarithm solver' using google but need to explain strategy to him so that doesn't help!

I got a solution for b thinking they were two different questions but my solution to b doesn't work for a. The solution upthread works for both so is clearly the desired solution but why the fucking fuck are they labelled a and b like separate questions if they are supposed to be part of the same question?

Oh, and I wouldn't give this as homework to my secondary classes because what is the learning outcome apart from annoyance?

What's the point of homework if parents do it anyway? Teachers should just teach for half the lesson and have kids go over the concepts on their own for the second half.

I know, not the point of this thread but parents doing homework is one of my bugbears.

itly I got the same solution. Zero must be either B or E (it's fairly easy to whittle it down to B, D or E; D can be eliminated via A and G). Now if B=0 then I=1, J=2, G=4 (this is easy), then A= 6 or 7 and F= 5 or 6 (depending on A). I plugged in 7 for A and got the solution. Which saved me having to work out further eliminations for the case of E=0.
