Alcohol - a bottle a week.

AIBU.
Is a bottle of whisky a week a lot?
70cl.
This is what my DH goes thro a week minimum.
I bf and bed share with DD. So don't drink at all anymore. Even before DD, I barely drank.
He sleeps in spare room as drinking and smoking and sleeping with DD aren't allowed.
I think it's a lot but he doesn't.
I also find it annoying that that's about £13 per week from food budget on alcohol....

Yes I think that is a lot to have all to himself.

StealthPolarBear · 11/10/2016 19:26

Yes I'd say so. Especially every week.

NapQueen · 11/10/2016 19:26

A full bottle of whisky is a lot. Imo. Dh is a whisky enjoyer and a full bottle would last him over a month.

Similarly (and I'm really not trying to sound snobby) at £13 a bottle I'm thinking he is drinking it because it's alcoholic rather than an actual enjoyment of whisky.

SwearyInn · 11/10/2016 19:27

Yes - that's about 30 units. Not good.

fannyfanackapan · 11/10/2016 19:28

I'm going against the grain and saying no, it's not a lot. Does he make it last a full week?

Matchstickbox · 11/10/2016 19:28

It's the Sainsbury's version so yeah cheap shot imo.
From a health point of view it's not great is it?!

OP posts:
MillionToOneChances · 11/10/2016 19:29

It's about double the recommended maximum

Ginmakesitallok · 11/10/2016 19:29

It's about 30 units a week- equivalent to about 3 bottles of wine.

Matchstickbox · 11/10/2016 19:29

Yup if he runs out he'd not get more till that weeks shop and if on call won't drink.
Says it's for relaxing....
ive never been the type that needs it to relax so not sure.

Sweeping generalisations there.

PeachBellini123 · 11/10/2016 19:30

The 'minimum' bit worries me - how much more does he drink on top of that?

MyGiddyUncle · 11/10/2016 19:30

Hmm, I disagree with this. Dh is a whisky drinker. He will spend a small fortune on a really nice single malt and is the biggest single malt snob you could meet.

He also enjoys a whisky and coke though and he'd buy a £15 bottle for that - he says you can't tell the difference in a cheap or an expensive whisky when you're putting it in a mixer. It just all tastes like whisky.

fannyfanackapan · 11/10/2016 19:31

Does he mix it with anything or drink it straight? Personally I couldn't drink it straight and get through that much in a week, but with a mixer, nightly, I think I could.

SaucyJack · 11/10/2016 19:32

It's the equivalent of two cans of lager a night. Many people would think that was nothing.

Is it affecting him or your relationship negatively?

SaggyNaggy · 11/10/2016 19:34

I do t thi k its that much tbh, I bet there's mumsnetter out there that drink far more in the equivalent of wine or MN Gin
But I wouldn't be surprised if there are folk that drink 3 bottles of wine on an average Friday or Saturdays night.

Matchstickbox · 11/10/2016 19:35

Only one bottle a week.
Perhaps I worded that wrong.... but tired sorry.
Mixes with coke and said same pp all tastes same with coke.
I just find it odd someone would drink every night.
But he points out brother ad Sil drink fair amount of wine....

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 11/10/2016 19:35

If that is all he drinking I wouldn't say he was at dangerous drinking levels, although it's more than advised for good long term health. The recommended maximum has recently being reduced for men from 21 to 14 units. If it's 40% proof 70cl is 30 units. I recall that 35 units was the trigger level for a problem, but it's so easy for people to underestimate.
The advice is to have two consecutive days off drinking each week, and ideally to drink on no more than three or four days.

I would maybe start by trying to introduce alcohol-free days?

Titsywoo · 11/10/2016 19:37

Well it's about 30% over the recommended limit for men. But I bet lots of people here drink 3 bottles of wine a week and think nothing of it but because he is drinking hard liquor will assume him to be an alcoholic!

Matchstickbox · 11/10/2016 19:37

Only affects my resentment with money other than that nope. So I'll go out and buy something for DD just to even it out.

TheSnorkMaidenReturns - I like the idea of alcohol free days. Thank you

tigerdriverII · 11/10/2016 19:39

Two double whiskies a day isn't a huge amount.

Gothgirl78 · 11/10/2016 19:39

Unless he's drink driving, abusive or you're going without financially I wouldn't worry.

There'll be lots of mumsnet puritans saying otherwise though.

I think we view spirits as much worse than other booze. For eg I'd be slightly shocked at a bottle of vodka A week but think nothing of 3 bottles of wine over a weekend. As long as it's not causing problems it's fine I think. I hate when people say 'a bottle of vodka lasts me a year' or wgatever - not Aimed at pps, more at friends I've heard say this - as what one person drinks has little bearing on the other.

madein1995 · 11/10/2016 19:42

No alcohol green days not brilliant - but as a pp said 2 whiskies an evening is nothing, hardly enough to get drunk. Better than downing a bottle over the course of a weekend anyway
