to think this isn't gross?

It's been playing on my mind all day and made me feel really shit about myself.
At a playgroup with dc. Some mums start chatting about hair washing, I said I wash mine once a week, about every 7 days or so.
One of the mums pulled a terrible face and literally recoiled in horror and said I am gross Sad she tried to laugh it off buy tbh it felt more like laughing at me.

I'm very clean, I wash at least once a day but if I wash my hair more often it goes very frizzy. It's not greasy at all either.

Is it really bad to go that long?

OP posts:
Princesspink999 · 10/10/2016 20:39

Lucky you! I can't go past a day!!

BrianCoxWithBellsOn · 10/10/2016 20:39

If I were to wash my hair once a week it would be gopping. I wash it every other night.

I have very thick, bra-strap length, heavy hair. I get a sweaty head. Therefore I need to.

Different hair will need washing less often.

Don't let it worry you OP.

JenLindleyShitMom · 10/10/2016 20:40

Leaving it etc is probably an old wives' tale.

Hmm what sort of an old wives' tale? To what end? "leave your hair a week and...... It'll turn to gold?"

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 10/10/2016 20:43

Maybe it's an age thing? Younger people, I feel, would not do this.

Pollaidh · 10/10/2016 20:44

My hairdresser recommends that I don't wash my dry, curly hair too often. I wash it about once a week, though by increasing about a day each time I can train it to go longer. For a while it was once every 2 weeks, with dry shampoo the last day.

I get complimented quite a lot on it (though the last day of the week I make sure I'm not leaving the house).

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 10/10/2016 20:45

"Meadows76

I odnt quite understand only having to wash it once a week Becausie doesn't look greasy. It's still dirty? Like if I walk about all day my hair is the most exposed part of me, it picks up EVERYTHING, body not so much as it's covered, but for people washing once a week surely your hair must be grubby?"

Exactly. Would people go without a daily bath or shower? It amounts to the same thing.

WeArePregnant11 · 10/10/2016 20:52

I wash my hair once to twice a week. But I have some scalp issues.... if I wash it more often my scalp gets irritated and itchy, no matter what shampoo I use.

My hair doesn't stink (trust me, I asked people because I was bothered by washing it only once a week) and it looks soft and clean.

JenLindleyShitMom · 10/10/2016 20:54

My colleague who can go a fortnight with washing hair is younger than me and I'm 30.

OnceThereWasThisGirlWho · 10/10/2016 20:58

Yup, I would. If I could wash my pits and bits... Because they get dirty, not from the outside world, but from me. (I shower because it's just easier and I like the feel of the water.)

Hair ditto. Gets a bit sweaty when exercising so do wash it every 3 days. But I used to think I had greasy hair, and used stronger and stronger shampoos and conditioning treatments on the ends where the shampoo had stripped my hair... I decided (after meeting a non-hair washer!) to try the opposite. Used baby shampoo for a while iirc, now use gentle shampoo and only shampoo once. Now it's silky and not greasy.

MsJudgemental · 10/10/2016 20:58

Once a week for me, too. Never had greasy hair, though my husband who did stopped washing it every day and the grease went away. My friend who is also my hairdresser (and teaches it) agrees that it's better for you.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 10/10/2016 20:59

I have naturally frizzy hair as well OP. I could easily go a week without washing it because it's never greasy and never smells BUT I climb about in containers and plant and it ends up with dirt and bits of men in it so I wash it when it's dirty.. but only because I have to.

If your hair smelt or was unkempt or greasy/dirty then obviously you'd wash it, but it isn't so you don't need to. :)

Onenerfwarfrombreakdown · 10/10/2016 21:00

I also have dry hair with a strong wave/curl and if it's washed too often it goes so frizzy you'd think I'd been electrocuted. I wash it about every 5 days roughly, dep on swimming and if I have to blow dry/straighten for work. I've asked partners before if my hair smells (as I was a bit paranoid when all my friends seemed to be daily washers!) and always said it was absolutely fine.
Just don't bother with her, she sounds like a rather nasty one.

BummyMummy77 · 10/10/2016 21:00

It's actually very good for you. Not gross.

BummyMummy77 · 10/10/2016 21:02

I actually get horrific itching that lasts for two days every time I wash my hair so fuck washing it more than I have to.

dementedma · 10/10/2016 21:04

Short, wiry, dry hair here. Twice a week is fine. I don't do any exercise mind you and dont live in a heavily polluted city so it doesn't get very dirty.

Coulddowithanap · 10/10/2016 21:04

I sometimes wash mine once a week. If I've been exercising or when I used to have a manual job I used to wash it more often.

HelloSunshines · 10/10/2016 21:06

Was it a young person who said that to you? It sounds like something a teenager would say. It's very immature and rude to say someone is gross to their face and/or laugh at them. I would have said "How rude are you?!" She's an idiot, forget about her.

ColintheCrow · 10/10/2016 21:07

My hair used to be so so greasy. I shower every day now but only wash my hair once a week. It's in much better condition and only looks a bit dodgy on the 6th day.

JenLindleyShitMom · 10/10/2016 21:07

it ends up with dirt and bits of men in it

Shock which bits? Grin

thestarryeyedsurprise · 10/10/2016 21:07

I was my hair once a week OP. I don't have the time to dry and style it (it's the thickest hair) I have a bath everyday so I wouldn't consider myself dirty however on day 7 it defiantly needs washing

MrsNuckyThompson · 10/10/2016 21:10

I have a friend with very frizzy hair who washes hers once or twice a week. I think most people probably wash theirs every day or two hence the reaction although she shouldn't have made you feel bad about it. As long as it looks clean is count yourself lucky!!!

chattygranny · 10/10/2016 21:10

Stupid rude woman! When I was a child in the 60s I honestly think the whole nation washed its hair once a week and as a PP has said the generation above mine the women often had never washed their own hair and went for a shampoo and set every1-2 weeks. I have exceptionally thick wavy hair and wash it once a week. It's at its best about day 4. First few days it's all about avoiding brushing and defrizzing with leave in conditioner. Hopefully enough of us have reassured you that you are not dirty!

Mummyamy123 · 10/10/2016 21:11

How I wish I could get away with washing my hair once a week. I left it 2 days recently and DS asked 'mummy whys your hair wet'
😯😯😯😯😯 grease bomb 😩

MsJudgemental · 10/10/2016 21:11

What is this dirt some people are so worried about? Do you work down a coal mine? On a building site? Is it 35 C where you are so you're sweating heavily? People are obsessed with supposed cleanliness these days. I am of an age when Sunday night was bath and hair wash night. If your nose isn't addled by constant chemicals you can tell if you smell and wash affected parts accordingly. How 'dirty' can your arms and legs possibly get unless you've been rolling around in mud? Your hair and body have natural emollients which look after them.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 10/10/2016 21:11

Shock... that would be METAL, JenLindley. I'm not that much of a hussy, honest. GrinBlush
