It's been playing on my mind all day and made me feel really shit about myself.
At a playgroup with dc. Some mums start chatting about hair washing, I said I wash mine once a week, about every 7 days or so.
One of the mums pulled a terrible face and literally recoiled in horror and said I am gross Sad she tried to laugh it off buy tbh it felt more like laughing at me.

I'm very clean, I wash at least once a day but if I wash my hair more often it goes very frizzy. It's not greasy at all either.

Is it really bad to go that long?

I can do 5 days before need to tie it up. My hair is always at its best three days after washing. Yanbu and she was rude anyhow

Some people can't see beyond their own experience.. I need to wash mine every two days or it feels awful, really stuck to my head! But it's easy despite being long as I leave it to dry naturally. My mum goes 3 weeks (disabled) and it still smells nice and looks dry! Just ignore OP and crack on.

I wish I could get away with once a week! It's thin and greasy and rubbish. I've got it down to every other day, and on the non-wash day it looks like oily shit.

Wow lots of replies!
I'm in my 20s, I'm not on the young side of it though so I'm not sure if that counts as young or not.

My dh and my best friend have no problem being extremely honest with me and they've said it smells normal.
The woman is older than me and has always come across quite sneery so I'm just going to leave her to it in future. Thanks for not making me feel like a smelly pig Grin

Curlier hair often doesn't get as oily. The only reason to wash it more often is if you do a dirty job or live in a polluted city. Even then, a rinse is often enough to keep it fresh.

Mine is merely wavy and looks like an oil slick after 2 days!

Poppy's comments make me think of people who wash their towel after one use, or must shower every day or they feel dirty. I can't help thinking we have been sucked into an advertising nightmare where one feels they have to do these things to be 'normal'.

That said, I have friends who just have to wash their hair every day or they say it feels awful. My mum can go up to two weeks without washing hers. Ironically she often has people compliment her on the last day and ask her if she has just been to the hairdresser.

Each to their own but don't make people feel bad about their choices. Except the towel washing which gives me the rage for environmental reasons

I have thick curly hair which I wash about once a week, and leave the conditioner in. One when I was a student nurse I mentioned this and was told it was "disgusting". I was curious, and on questioning it turned out that she washed her hair daily to restyle it, not to get it clean, and most of the other daily washers agreed. So hygiene as a by product.

It's a very individual thing I think.
I have very thin oily hair that I have to wash every day (I skip a day if I don't have to go out).
I have friends with thick dry hair - who wouldn't dream of washing their hair every day. Natural oils are probably a good thing for their hair type.
Take no notice of her x

JenLindley... now that would be a glamorous job! Mine is electrical recycling; all the men are in one piece - and nowhere near my hair. Grin

My hair's like Harold, goes into natural ringlets (which I don't like on me). So when it's washed and dried (naturally), I brush it and it looks like little yellow chicken feathers (blonde), flies everywhere as it's fine. I've trained my husband to straighten it though and he's much better than me at it now.

Its actually good for your hair to wash 7 days or more. so this bint is naive.

I'm the same, my hair is extremely thick and frizzy so I find it doesn't get greasy.

I fucking HATE hair wash time. All in all it'll take me 2 hours from washing, blow drying and straightening Confused

I've got naturally curly hair (think ringlets rather than tight curls) and love the fact that I can leave my hair up to 5 days without washing it. Saying that, when I do wash it it's a right pain and takes around next hour. I can't do that every day!

I often get comments about my hair as you see so few people around with naturally curly hair. If it looked that bad from it's lack of washing, I doubt anyone would make a comment!

Grin lying I was trying to work out what your job was that you had bits of men in your hair. All I could come up with was coroner.

Not gross at all! I wash mine about twice a week, its wavy, dry and frizzy so can't wash it more often. When I was younger I would only wash it once a week but since having DD it gets oily quicker than before.

Dry shampoo makes my scalp sooo itchy. And they all have such a strong obvious dry shampoo smell...

I have to wash mine every other day (and that's because I try really hard not to wash it every day, I put it up in a bun etc) but I have straight fine greasy hair. My mum washes her hair once a week but she has very dry curly hair and it doesn't need it. It actually looks better after a few days and no, it doesn't smell nor does it look dirty. So YANBU.

Have you tried dry shampoo for those suffering with greasy hair? It's amazing stuff.

A girl I work with only washes her hair once a week and I am sooooo jealous it is unbelievable! No laughing matter I wish I could do the same as you OP!

Equally it is obvious you don't need more than that otherwise she wouldn't have been so shocked! Grin

To make it clear- if my hair was ok with being washed weekly, I wouldn't be washing it any more than that at all!

What is this dirt some people are so worried about? Do you work down a coal mine? On a building site? Is it 35 C where you are so you're sweating heavily? People are obsessed with supposed cleanliness these days. I am of an age when Sunday night was bath and hair wash night. If your nose isn't addled by constant chemicals you can tell if you smell and wash affected parts accordingly. How 'dirty' can your arms and legs possibly get unless you've been rolling around in mud? Your hair and body have natural emollients which look after them.

Stupid rude woman! When I was a child in the 60s I honestly think the whole nation washed its hair once a week and as a PP has said the generation above mine the women often had never washed their own hair and went for a shampoo and set every1-2 weeks. I have exceptionally thick wavy hair and wash it once a week. It's at its best about day 4. First few days it's all about avoiding brushing and defrizzing with leave in conditioner. Hopefully enough of us have reassured you that you are not dirty!

I have a friend with very frizzy hair who washes hers once or twice a week. I think most people probably wash theirs every day or two hence the reaction although she shouldn't have made you feel bad about it. As long as it looks clean is count yourself lucky!!!
