To expect to be paid more than half? (Pic included)

Background: I'm a home baker using decent/top quality ingredients in my cakes, friends and family buy off me for special events and am trying to kick start a little baking business from home ( after receiving loads of compliments and encouragement which I'm thankful for!) A friend has requested a cake (pictured) and offered well below the asking price knowing what quality I use and usually the one to berate others if they take the mick when it comes to price. I don't over charge and usually find I've undrecharged when adding up costs ( new to this). How much would you expect to pay for this cake? I'm just feeling a little upset really, I love her and will still make it just surprised at asking to pay less than half. I understand mates rates and all...
Before you ask
Yes she can afford it
I don't buy wholesale ingredients
No I didn't stick to my price (out of shock)

Can you make me one of these for my friend's baby shower, OP? £5.75 should cover it, no?

Sadly people just don't get what goes into them at all, blood sweat & tears

I'll pass on that cake thanks.

Marking place

I am gutted as I cant find a photo! I know some where taken, but I am buggered if I know where they are. In the meantime I will post a pic of Iggle Piggle I made for DD4 a couple of years ago.

I cannot tell the size of the cake, and I do not know what the ingredients are however, I think you have made that design in a particularly subtle and masterful way. You really have given the effect of a golden, sparkling Hollywood glow, and the "Love" really looks neon. Well done! To me that looks like the result of real master-craftmanship and it is also very artistic. I am sure you could have a big success with your business.

I have never bought a very special cake, and I don't live in London, so prices where I live are lower - so forgive me if I am way out of touch. But if it were quite small, say about 4 inches diameter on the bottom cake, 3 inches on the top I would expect to pay £35 (like a bunch of flowers on Interflora). If it were bigger, 7 inches on the bottom, 6 on the top £65 and if about 10 inches at the base £100 + given it is so high and would use lots of ingredients.

BaronessEllaSaturday · 10/10/2016 21:38

Well at least this thread has got me thinking cake designs so the one for DDs party in a few weeks has now been decided on so for me it's not been completely wasted.

Eva50 · 10/10/2016 21:39

Bogeyface that's a great cake. Sadly I lack talent in the baking department. Here is ds3's 9th birthday cake. I could pretend he made it himself!

£7000 is my guess. Let me know when the OP replies

rollonthesummer · 10/10/2016 21:40

whothefuckhas5children · 10/10/2016 21:40

Ironmanrocks · 10/10/2016 21:40

This is boring....and the cake looks like a candle. No thanks.

user1475440127 · 10/10/2016 21:42

It's strange that people consider a beautiful handmade item to cost less than it does in the shops.
Put your business head on and ask for the going rate,
If they are not happy with the price then it's tough.
I'd suggest setting yourself up as a small business . Your work is of a very high standard. Cakes and confectionery manufactures have to have their premises inspected but the regulations are not as strict as those who are for example making meat products.
Worth checking this out.
Good luckxx

Valeriemalorie · 10/10/2016 21:42

4 billion dollars? Seems reasonable to me.

ChequeOff · 10/10/2016 21:43

Op setting herself up for a bun fight I see. Hope she's got her hard hat on

KindDogsTail · 10/10/2016 21:43

Sorry OP, I've just seen the price of the good quality M&S cakes and what everyone else has been saying so I was out of touch with reality with my prices. I can see your cake would be worth a lot.

RockinHippy · 10/10/2016 21:46

How did you get yourself into this situation though?

Friend says-can you make a cake like this picture?

You say-'yes. It will cost £100'

She says-'no, I'll give you £50'

You say, 'er, no. I'm not making it'

???
