To expect to be paid more than half? (Pic included)

Background: I'm a home baker using decent/top quality ingredients in my cakes, friends and family buy off me for special events and am trying to kick start a little baking business from home ( after receiving loads of compliments and encouragement which I'm thankful for!) A friend has requested a cake (pictured) and offered well below the asking price knowing what quality I use and usually the one to berate others if they take the mick when it comes to price. I don't over charge and usually find I've undrecharged when adding up costs ( new to this). How much would you expect to pay for this cake? I'm just feeling a little upset really, I love her and will still make it just surprised at asking to pay less than half. I understand mates rates and all...
Before you ask
Yes she can afford it
I don't buy wholesale ingredients
No I didn't stick to my price (out of shock)

Spill???

Bogeyface · 10/10/2016 21:06

Currently waiting for layers 3 & 4 to come out of the oven for DD's birthday cake. Made a golden snitch last year but this year am making the easiest HP themed cake ever, the one Hagrid made for Harry, and it if it looks shit then great as thats the whole point!

The Golden Snitch cost a fortune to make as had to make the fondant icing and spend a fortune on edible gold spray. Someone saw the pic on FB and asked me to make one for their DD, offered me £20. When I said that the ingredients cost more than that I was called a liar and berated for trying to make a profit from friends Hmm I wouldnt have minded but she wasnt actually my friend, she had seen the post on another friends wall who had shared it!

ArmySal · 10/10/2016 21:07

I've just had some cake and I'm holding this thread responsible.

I've had to make do with a scone with clotted cream and jam (jam on first, obvs)

clumsyduck · 10/10/2016 21:07

14 fucking pages Iv just read and still no answer from op Angry I need to get a life

CalmYaTits · 10/10/2016 21:07

Instead of guessing the price of the cake, lets guess the OP's whereabouts.

I think op and her husband are wanting to spruce up their sex life and currently out trying a local swingers club.

She has bought some homemade cake along with her to make things more exciting.(and for market research)

Bubblebloodypop · 10/10/2016 21:07

OP we neeed to know!!

ivykaty44 · 10/10/2016 21:08

What ever price she has offered then is low, so go back and give her the list of ingredients to get you aNd make it clear you need your money up front Smile

timeforabrewnow · 10/10/2016 21:11

clumsyduck

Your time was not wasted.

You SAVED me from looking through 14 pages Grin

Cheers

ImperialBlether · 10/10/2016 21:11

I think she's offered £10 "to cover costs and a bit extra for your time."

You don't have to do it, you know. You could send a message now saying you're not going to do it.

clumsyduck · 10/10/2016 21:11

timefor Hahaha

That's made me feel better . You could say I'm a hero really

MamaDoGood · 10/10/2016 21:12

Really..... 14 pages.. really ?!?!

IhatchedaSnorlax · 10/10/2016 21:12

I had the most amazing birthday cake done by a fab cake lady & she charged me £100, so for that one, I'd say between £80 -£100 depending on size.

Bogeyface · 10/10/2016 21:12

I got the famous "Its only sugar and flour and stuff". I do think people forget that icing, decorations etc all cost money and if you buy them from a supermarket as opposed to getting them at trade prices, they cost a lot of money. And of course your time is "free". Well it is for my kids but not for yours! That was my one and only foray into the world of professional baking :o

timeforabrewnow · 10/10/2016 21:13

Oh and OP

Come back and tell us the price of the frickin cake and what your stupid friend offered!!

Please?

GabsAlot · 10/10/2016 21:13

ffs op come on

im gongto say 500 just to be stupid

user1466690252 · 10/10/2016 21:14

Op where abouts in the uk are you?
So I can bill you for my time in reading 14 pages with no answers?

Im thinking £150 is fair?

viques · 10/10/2016 21:16

I think the OP should reduce the price, whatever it is, because she is ripping off someone else's design .
