To expect to be paid more than half? (Pic included)

Background: I'm a home baker using decent/top quality ingredients in my cakes, friends and family buy off me for special events and am trying to kick start a little baking business from home ( after receiving loads of compliments and encouragement which I'm thankful for!) A friend has requested a cake (pictured) and offered well below the asking price knowing what quality I use and usually the one to berate others if they take the mick when it comes to price. I don't over charge and usually find I've undrecharged when adding up costs ( new to this). How much would you expect to pay for this cake? I'm just feeling a little upset really, I love her and will still make it just surprised at asking to pay less than half. I understand mates rates and all...
Before you ask
Yes she can afford it
I don't buy wholesale ingredients
No I didn't stick to my price (out of shock)

Now I love cake but fuck would I ever pay more than £50 for one. Barring a wedding cake I guess?

It's just ludicrous. It's cake. It gets cut up and eaten???

I live in London and am not familiar with cakes being so expensive?

JenLindleyShitMom · 10/10/2016 19:57

Place marking for update.

Careforadrink · 10/10/2016 19:57

Anyone else really fancy some cake now? Fuck it.

BigApple11 · 10/10/2016 19:57

Oh ffs Biscuit

Fizzer123 · 10/10/2016 19:58

Tell us how much the flipping cake was Cake

Notmorecake · 10/10/2016 19:58

If you can bake to the standard of the picture then £150 is still mates ratesby far. If you can give her something similar but maybe not as polished then charge whst you feel comfortable with over and above the cost of your ingredients and time at a minimal rate. As soon as you charge for cake it has to be perfect. I also decline a request to make a cake if I feel a few mistakes or wobbles will ruin the feel of the occasion. Also, I have been left feeling terribly flat by people who have received a stunning cake from me but paid for ingredients only and not bothered to express more than a cursory thanks . It's a minefield.
A proff cake baker would easily charge 300 for this ( in the south). X

I honestly think MN should have push messages, that all users mandatorily sign up to, that alert them when people want them to return with an answer. Especially when it's a "guess what/how much" thread Grin

Laiste · 10/10/2016 19:58

I know very little about the costs of cake making, and would have guessed £100. For an amature baker I suppose i'd be thinking 40ish for ingredients and the rest for a day's work.

Guessing friend offered £20/30.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 10/10/2016 19:58

Sorry folks, just me being me! False alarm! -how long does it take to chuck some kids into bed--

BastardGoDarkly · 10/10/2016 19:59

For the love of Cake op!?

Parrish · 10/10/2016 19:59

I would pay £120 if I was going by mates rates. £180 normal price!

flowerbombVR · 10/10/2016 20:01

Oh ffs.

pigsDOfly · 10/10/2016 20:01

What an odd thing to post about with no intention of coming back.

Agree with Hefzi the cake's bloody hideous anyway.

Schmoochypoos · 10/10/2016 20:03

We need an update OP!!! Cake

Tosnogornottosnog · 10/10/2016 20:03

I've just scrolled through 10 pages ffs

NynaevesSister · 10/10/2016 20:03

Got all the way to the end and she hasn't come back :(

I would expect to pay around £200 (although I wouldn't as I don't like the design).

I bet the friend offered £35.

TathitiPete · 10/10/2016 20:04

Didn't think I'd get to page 10 without OP coming back. I shall enter my guess so, £40.

DonaldStott · 10/10/2016 20:04

I have just bloody scrolled through ten pages too. Come on OP

user1467798821 · 10/10/2016 20:06

Suspense is killing me!

amysmummy12345 · 10/10/2016 20:08

I reckon OP has challenged her friend and been pushed into the oven a'la Hansel and Gretel 😁

SquinkiesRule · 10/10/2016 20:08

No flippin way I just read 10 pages and still no answer.
I say open the victorian safe, and shove the cake in, then cancel the cheque.

Hissy · 10/10/2016 20:08

I'd love to know too

Tell her if she buys ALL the ingredients, you'll make it and decorate it for double what she's offering.

Otherwise tell her no.

AtMyHouse · 10/10/2016 20:08

The op is probably busy baking cakes Cake

WeArePregnant11 · 10/10/2016 20:08
