How old is too old for trainers as leisure wear?

I'm thinking of buying some trainers, mostly for cycling but also for leisure wear too. They're Adidas Sambas I'm 37 and am slightly worried that I'll look a bit mutton dressed as lamb or someone who never moved on from Britpop.

My mother wears really nice Nike trainers. She loves the ones with the air cushion. She once borrowed a pair of mine years ago when she forgotten her flats. She almost made orgasmic noises because they were so blissfully comfortable. Now she has loads of pairs in different colours. She is 76 years young

BummyMummy77 · 09/10/2016 03:44

Queen- lol!!! Grin

Atenco · 09/10/2016 04:55

I bloody hate trainers but I have to wear them because of my old age as I need the padded soles. If I were your age OP I wouldn't be seen dead in them.

mollie123 · 09/10/2016 05:33

I have never ever worn trainers
I hate to see really elderly people wearing garish trainers (pink!) with old-fashioned clothes and I say this as a 70 year old.
I wear canvas shoes/deck shoes in the summer or comfortable Josef Seibel flats.
I have stylish pumps for occasions
I wear good knee/calf length boots in the colder weather.
If there was a stylish elegant trainer for sale I might consider it - but otherwise NO.

SabineUndine · 09/10/2016 05:39

55 and I wear my Brooks trainers a lot as I jave foot problems that they help. I love how they look, too.

Chocolatekeepsmesane · 09/10/2016 06:11

My step mum is 70 in 2 weeks she wears trainers a lot.
I'm 33 and wear trainers sometimes, sketchers with the soft padded soles, I have lots of joint problems and will carry on wearing them until I die. ( not the same pair clearly Grin

I'm 60 and Nike Free or Glide are the only shoes I've worn for the last 30 years (faithful). My boots are all Nike too.
I keep 30+ pairs in all shades to fit my mood
I live in combat trousers or jeans, so all very comfy.

BlackeyedSusan · 09/10/2016 08:42

set a new trend. wear thenm til you are no longer happy with them. my mum is late 80's and still wears them as they are comfortable.

BeardMinge · 09/10/2016 08:44

My mum is 82 and wears her Stan Smith-alikes all the time!

I'm 42 and live in my gold Cons.

CandyOcean · 09/10/2016 08:48

In my late 40s and have a collection of Air Max which bring me great joy (especially the gold ones!) My dad is 72 and has just discovered Skechers and loves them.

storminabuttercup · 09/10/2016 08:49

I'm 33 and wear converse but only wear sporty ones for exercise (so not often )
DP is male and wears the less sporty adidas trainers (think Stan Smith, Lacoste type ones for everyday)
I wouldn't team up a pair of air max for example worth jeans but it's just not really my 'style' DP (42 by the way) wouldn't either but that doesn't make it wrong

treaclesoda · 09/10/2016 08:51

I saw a lady who was probably in her 60s, possibly 70s, the other day wearing slim jeans, trainers and an oversized sweater and she looked fantastic, really stylish, and not mutton like at all, just someone who liked to look modern. Never too old for enjoying a bit of fashion.

Basicbrown · 09/10/2016 09:34

It isn't to do with age.

I'm older than you and don't wear trainers apart from as trainers. But tbh it's because they don't really go with the clothes I tend to wear (teenage skinny jeans lol). I prefer flats or boots.

Dunkling · 09/10/2016 09:47

I'm 47 and practically live in Converse. If I saw a 70 something woman wearing then with the right kind of clothes, I'd think she looked pretty cool, not mutton!

wiltingfast · 09/10/2016 09:49

My mother is 67 and wears them.

I think you're safe Grin

NicknameUsed · 09/10/2016 09:50

I have tried Converse on, but find them so uncomfortable. They don't offer any kind of support or cushioning. I tend to walk a lot and when I walk I stride quickly, so anything unsupportive doesn't work for me.

That is why I wear Sketchers. Nothing comes close to them comfortwise. I just wish they looked a little more stylish.

ZazieCats · 09/10/2016 10:15

Earlier this week I saw an older couple walking up to the town centre in Edinburgh. Late 70s, early 80s I would say. Both tiny, white haired.

The guy was like an encyclopaedia of Scottish street style through the ages....well, style of the terraces too!

Red tartan burnet (cap) with the check cut on the bias, matching red tartan cashmere scarf. Scarf was wound round his neck and tucked into the jacket of his suit...black pinstripe suit with baggy trousers, finished off with black suede trainers, Fila boots I would say.

And he was absolutely rocking it. Six or seven decades of street style distilled into one look. Hats off to a master, that old boy was the best dressed person I have seen for a long time by a country mile.

Walking into town, side by side with his wife, by the looks of it they'd been together for nigh on six or seven decades too. Class in a glass.

TheNaze73 · 09/10/2016 10:21

You're never too old

BowiesJumper · 09/10/2016 10:41

I'm 36 and don't consider myself old. Should I?? Not wearing trainers because you're too old? How depressing.

Charley50 · 09/10/2016 10:49

My mum is 88 and I've just got her out of those old persons boots that you buy from those strange catalogues, and into trainers. They are so much more comfortable and she looks cool.

DailyMaui · 09/10/2016 11:02

Don't be daft. I'm fifty and have quite a serious adidas superstar addiction. I wear them everywhere. In fact I wore my new ones (they look like they are knitted - they are incredible) to London Fashion Week and had tons terribly trendy people asking where I got them.

My brother is 42 and only ever wears Nike Air. No boots, shoes, just nikes. It all depends how you wear them - he can wear them with a suit and they look cool.

MsColouring · 09/10/2016 11:03

38 and love my converse!

whatlifestylechoice · 09/10/2016 11:04

Wait...what? I'm 42 and thought it was a sign of my slow slide into middle age that I'm wearing trainers more and more when not doing actual sports. Wearing comfy, supportive shoes instead of fashionable but feet-shredding ones is surely a feature of being not-quite-young-anymore?
