How old is too old for trainers as leisure wear?

I'm thinking of buying some trainers, mostly for cycling but also for leisure wear too. They're Adidas Sambas I'm 37 and am slightly worried that I'll look a bit mutton dressed as lamb or someone who never moved on from Britpop.

How can you be too old for trainers? They're the most comfy of shoes.

pollyblack · 08/10/2016 21:53

My stepmother is 70 and looks fabulously stylish, she wears trainers a lot!

dementedma · 08/10/2016 21:54

Mum sometimes wears them. She's 81.
I always wear them. I'm 52

shazkiwi · 08/10/2016 21:54

Has anybody seen this? About light up trainers :)

NicknameUsed · 08/10/2016 21:55

I wear Sketchers Go Walk, and I don't care that they are considered deeply frumpy and unfashionable by mumsnetters.

The problem with them is that once you have succumbed to the deep comfort of wearing them nothing else is as comfortable. It is like walking on cushions.

WeArePregnant11 · 08/10/2016 21:57

Cute trainers :) I think these are appropriate for all ages, as long as it's leisure wear, obviously.

LordBuckley · 08/10/2016 21:58

My mum wouldn't wear trainers outside the gym but she's 70.

I'm 68 and I wear them all the time, with jeans. I wouldn't wear them with a skirt, but I never wear skirts anyway.

BestIsWest · 08/10/2016 21:59

I have Skechers trainers with 'gogamat' technology whatever that is. My God, they are bliss. I've never worn anything so comfortable.

sleepwhenidie · 08/10/2016 22:01

What eminybob said!

Trainers are fantastic and there's no age limit but those particular trainers are fugly - and don't even look like they will be comfy - sorry.

lazymum99 · 08/10/2016 22:07

I wasn't quite sure I understood the question at first. Who thinks about age when buying trainers. I barely wear anything else (i'm 56).
Those trainers you've chosen however look like the ones that kids wear for football training. I love my trainers and my cupboards full of them.

Nocabbageinmyeye · 08/10/2016 22:07

I had the same conversation with my dh the other day op, we bought dd (11) superstars and I said I liked them but was I too old to pull them off (37), I decided i was borderline but after reading this I think I'll get myself a pair (I doubt dd will be impressed)

Cute trainers

As a gentleman mumsnetter with size nines, I don't think anything will look cute on my feet!

Agree that those have a flat sole that would be rubbish for cycling, anyhow.

And Adidas are very narrow, so if your feet aren't, then they'll hurt.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 08/10/2016 22:13

A flat sole is good for cycling, no?

OP posts:
phoenix1973 · 08/10/2016 22:17

They come with a shoe size. Not an age guide.
Wear what you like.

Huppopapa · 08/10/2016 22:17

If a man, 18.
I shouldn't presume to express an opinion for women.

plominoagain · 08/10/2016 22:22

I'm 47 , I only ever wear trainers at home , or my yard boots . I have virtually no need of any other footwear . Am just about to replace my running trainers and am currently dithering over what to choose , in fact am probably going to see one of those places that see how you run and then find the best ones .

An age limit had never even crossed my mind.

Topseyt · 08/10/2016 22:29

I am 50 and always wear trainers.

Velcro fastening ones since an arm injury earlier this year meant that for a long time I couldn't tie my own laces ( I can again now).

gabsdot · 08/10/2016 22:29

I'm 46 and I recently bought a pair of multicoloured sketchers. I love them.
So comfy

RockinHippy · 08/10/2016 22:36

My dad wears them, they look great, they are comfortable, he loves them

He's 80

PickAChew · 08/10/2016 22:37

A flat, inflexible sole, which these have, is pretty much guaranteed shredded calves at some point. Cycling trainers follow the foot's natural contour so it holds onto the pedal better.

megletthesecond · 08/10/2016 22:40

You're never too old for trainers. I get a new pair of Nikes every year and I'm 42. No intention of giving them up.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 08/10/2016 22:41

Pick

All cycling shoes I've seen are for cleats, don't suppose you can recommend any good non cleated trainers for cycling?

OP posts:
PickAChew · 08/10/2016 23:01

No particular recommendations (haven't been able to cycle for years due to joint problems) but most of the ones on Amazon are fairly ordinary looking with slightly moulded soles.

At the very least, you need something that isn't completely flat. Even a running trainer has a little moulding and more flexibility to it.

queenMab99 · 08/10/2016 23:05

When you get to a certain age, you may find you can ONLY wear trainers, for leisure and everything else, due to arthritis/horribly swollen feet and ankles, but don't worry as you won't care anyway!
