To get my cat stuffed anyway?

LeatherAndLace · 05/10/2016 17:46

My lovely cat is nearing the end of his life. I've always loved taxidermy but never owned any as dh hates it. He absolutely refuses to 'allow' me to get our cat stuffed.

Aibu to do it anyway?

I was going to but the price was a lot more than £150

  • to get a decent mould and facial shape was looking at nearer £2000
so I just had her skin cured and stored may make a handbag at some stage

A little old lady's two cats died on the same day and she took them to be stuffed. The taxidermist asked if she wanted them mounted. "No," she said, "just sitting side by side."

Monkey wins this thread. & SaucyJack you make a good point - I have a similarly lazy cat; basically a sentient cushion.

My cat's paws are super cute. I have idly & not too seriously thought about doing some sort of lucky rabbit's foot thing with them...

Thatsmeinthecorner2016 · 06/10/2016 04:13

Two almost beloved cats (I just had to get rid of a living rodent toy right now hence the almost. Not feeling the lurve right now). Would never think about stuffing their dead bodies to feel closer to them. What made them the pets I love, swear at and despair of would be gone. I want great memories, not a dusty carcass.

I have tonsilitis and this thread is similtaneously cheering me up and KILLING me it hurts so much when I laugh! Grin

YelloDraw · 06/10/2016 08:11

I'd keep it a secret and hide her in the cellar/back of the wardrobe/somewhere I can send DH looking for something during a power cut

Amazing!

LunaLoveg00d · 06/10/2016 08:42

Weird, weird, WEIRD.

Just bury the bloody thing.

TheSultanofPingu · 06/10/2016 09:17

I adore my cat, but I find the thought of him stuffed and staring into the distance with glassy dead eyes horrifying.

youredeadtomesteven · 06/10/2016 12:43

I thought about getting my beloved dog stuffed, but it would be too painful to see him but not be able to get a response?

He's in an urn, and I've got a necklace that is an urn so when I'm feeling brave, I'll put a little bit of him inside there, so I can have him close to me always.

HerFaceIsaMapOfTheWorld · 06/10/2016 13:04

I dont think you are creepy op, I lost a pet know how it is.

JellyBelli · 06/10/2016 13:05

If it would upset your DH then YABU.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/10/2016 13:16

I did think when our last dog died that it was a shame to burn that lovely fur, but really would be weird to keep it. His ashes are scattered on his favourite patch of long grass where he loved to bounce.

altiara · 06/10/2016 14:16

My cat had lovely fur, I'd like her to be a rug when she dies or a fur scarf Blush she's very mean so we won't be missing her personality!

Skweeki · 06/10/2016 17:50

Some people send their cat's fur to be spun. My bf did this and incorporated it into a blanket I crocheted for her. Would something like that be an option?

Mybeardeddragonjustdied2016 · 06/10/2016 17:56

My dd wants to make a rug from our husky when she dies!!
Gross.
Stuffed cat OK tho
And it's your cat to decide its fate not your dh! Threaten to get him done when his time comes!!
You could have his penis as an umbrella hook!! (ob have to have it stuffed to its full potential!)

PageStillNotFound404 · 06/10/2016 18:01

Don't bury him! Have none of you ever read Pet Semetary?

Our previous cats are on top of the kitchen cupboards (in wooden caskets, for the avoidance of doubt). Next to the tin in which we keep the Dreamies for current cats, a juxtaposition that amuses me far more than it should.

LeatherAndLace · 06/10/2016 19:38

Just come back to this, reassuring to see I'm not the only one who's thought of it!
See I'd turn him in to a bag but he hates being held. His eyes are a bit dodge anyway so the googely eyes wouldn't look too different Grin

The poor thing keeps giving me an evil side eye. I'm sure he's lurking on here and plotting his revenge...

I have a paved garden with pots. Even in the biggest one, my dead cat would smell. I think about this all the time now he's 14.

He's very sprightly though. Sometimes too fucking sprightly at 6am.

HereIAm20 · 06/10/2016 20:53

I was going to put that the only cats I have seen have ended up looking very strange and try to find a picture but I see everyone else has already shown you the probable end result Grin

OhSoggyBiscuit · 06/10/2016 20:56

What would happen if you had multiple beloved pets you wanted taxidermied? Your hallway would end up looking like a branch of the Natural History Museum!!

TheoriginalLEM · 06/10/2016 20:58

oh god please don't! i like taxidermy but all you have is your cats skin on a mount. It will have no soul and will be painful to live with.

StarryIllusion · 06/10/2016 21:04

I would leave you if you did that to our pet. It would break my heart every time I looked at it. Seeing a pet that I loved and cuddled and saw alive, dead and stiff and still standing there looking at me. No. Sorry. Maybe I'm too sensitive but that would just be horrible.

pennefabredux · 07/10/2016 01:22

Many many years ago when our cat died, we opted for child/infant coffin and buried in back garden. It was winter and couldn't dig too deep. Always wondered if the next owners ever found the coffin and wondered. Subsequent pets always cremated and have lovely boxes with ashes.

LadyHonoriaDedlock · 07/10/2016 02:23

Wtf should you care what dp thinks, support local weird industry and get 'em stuffed. I'm aware that might sound aggresive as I'm ASD but if it makes you happy, go ahead, it's not hurting anyone x

IWasGintyMarlowe · 07/10/2016 03:56

why not give your cat a nice little burial? with a pretty headstone? wouldn't that bhe nicer? or plant a tree in memory of him?
