To be upset that friend has bought my DS's main xmas present.

Quite gutted really. Money is tight this year, and i was going to buy my son a new tablet which he desperately wants, and was relieved that it is something that i'd be able to get for less than £100 and ensure it was a good one/accessoried etc.

Friend of ours that we don't see too regularly has bought him one for christmas, i'm really grateful for her thought and obviously what is quite a large present, but don't see why she got something so extravagent, and now i don't know what to do.. It's a haehne, £30 one, mixed reviews.. I'm left with no idea what to get as a main present instead, and really upset it's not what i wanted/might not be that great

I think the issue here is that one person’s extravagant spend is another persons not too much to spend. I wouldn’t consider a £30 gift particularly extravagant but i can see why you might if money was tight.

If this is a good friend might you be able to tell her that you planned to buy your DS this and ask if you could buy it from her? Maybe then ask that she buys some accessories to go with it?

How old is DS? A £30 tablet is likely to rubbish, and one for under £100 probably won't be able to cope with any new apps (minecraft; Pokémon go; etc). It may be better to ask friend to return tablet and club together for a decent one? Or get him a different main present. It's hard, she probably felt she was doing something lovely.

Can you not tell her that you were getting him one and you'd rather she returned it and bought him something else.

From experience, the £30 tablet will be rubbish and slow. You can get a Kindle Fire for £50 which will be much better.

Different brand than yours but my mum bought it for dd's birthday after we asked for vouchers towards a decent one

It broke after the 10th use. As in wouldn't even charge up anymore

Went online to look at it and voila, it's a common problem with this brand

Tell the friend you actually bought the tablet but didn't want to tell her (even if you already said you hadn't bought it). You were too embarrassed to say.

I'm seconding a kindle fire. I got dd the slightly more expensive one than the £50. It's the same with a bigger memory.

Kindle fire is less than 50 quid and my kids have no complaints. Would seriously recommend

Came with a drop proof cover and apps just for kids. It was shite. So slow and then broken

I bought my DS a kindle fire for £40 last year for Christmas and it's still working perfectly now and can cope with downloading all the apps, Ebooks etc - would recommend!

As for your friend I also would go with the 'although I appreciate the gift you have bought, I already have the xxx tablet for my DC, is there any chance you could exchange the gift, or give it so someone else? I understand that you might not be able to get DC a replacement gift if the latter'
