........ yes Grin

peppercold · 04/10/2016 21:01

You knew that was coming didn't you?

SaucyJack · 04/10/2016 21:02

I love a ......?

I mine it with my eyebrows and a sideways glance when I read it.

SaucyJack · 04/10/2016 21:03

*mime

FlyingElbows · 04/10/2016 21:03

Well... Tbh.... I've noticed it as well and...I was wondering if it's maybe... people eople writing... exactly as things sound in their head?

AmeliaJack · 04/10/2016 21:05

I like a good ellipsis personally. It should just be 3 dots though. Anything else is just showing off.

SirChenjin · 04/10/2016 21:05

Posts I can cope with, but partial thread titles with a ..... irritate the hell out of me and I refuse to open them

GaryGilmoresEyes · 04/10/2016 21:06

Ellipsis...hmmmmmm...Grin

ageingrunner · 04/10/2016 21:07

Yeah...it does get on my tits a bit...tbh

Maudlinmaud · 04/10/2016 21:08

Oh goodness...I think...I do this....paranoid

StCecilia · 04/10/2016 21:20

I do this...all the time...sorry. I just can't stop though...it builds...tension Wink

acasualobserver · 04/10/2016 21:22

Like any other sort of punctuation, used correctly, it can add meaning.

SabineUndine · 04/10/2016 21:26

Strictly speaking, it should be three full stops with a space between each and before the first and after the last . . . like that. It's called an ellipsis and shows that text or speech are missing.

Anniegetyourgun · 04/10/2016 21:28

I likes a good ellipsis, I does. But it has to be in the right context or...

The posts I've seen on here have definitely not been in the correct context.

That's what annoys me.

OP posts:
Sallystyle · 04/10/2016 21:44

I do it, cause I like them...

M0nstersinthecl0set · 04/10/2016 21:55

How else would you waste someone elses time? Clickbait writing I suppose.

DurhamDurham · 04/10/2016 21:55

..................I................don't know............what you..........mean!

SaucyJack · 04/10/2016 21:59

"it builds...tension"

Yup. Now reading all the posts on this thread in the style of Mystic..... Meh-EH-ehh-eh-eh-EH-gggggg......

I bet she loves a passive-aggressive ellipsis.

I do it an awful lot....it's because to me, they serve a different function than a full stop, comma or whatever.

It's a pause...dramatic or thoughtful....it illustrates where I'm not finished speaking but it's not the end of the sentence.

I think people do it when they're typing as they speak.

I could add full stops in the places they belong and commas in the places they belong...but I don't want to.

I prefer writing like this...because it reads differently and when I'm on a forum rather than writing an essay, the rules don't apply.

SatsukiKusakabe · 05/10/2016 02:38

I did this today, I think for the first time. And yes, it's the William Shatner voice thing. (And to convey a sense of uncertainty).

However if there's a thread about it, maybe I've unthinkingly followed a trend, like when I see a Budweiser ad and five minutes later go to the fridge to look for beer without knowing why...

RubbishMantra · 05/10/2016 02:39

I do it. I try to type as I would speak - sometimes needing a pause to think about what I'm thinking. As you would in everyday conversations.....

junebirthdaygirl · 05/10/2016 04:20

I used to do this when l came on mumsnet first and l was severely reprimanded so have learnt to drop it. I have no problem with it and it would be my natural way but as a new comer being corrected l decided to avoid driving people mad!
