To think I'm not 'showing my age' for liking TV show Crackerjack?

Got told I was showing my age because I mentioned 'Crackerjack' with fondness. Was promptly told by someone that this show finished 10 years before he was born! ?? Rude??!!

As an aside I was still being IDd for alcohol 2 years ago... but that's another thread....

Will this be your points to win or penalties to pay?? (that was the catchphrase, wasn't it?!!)

Erm....well if it's not even slightly current then you are showing your age! It's got nothing to do with how old you look Confused

I have no idea what it is, I was born in 1982.

megletthesecond · 04/10/2016 18:22

Crackerjack was a long time ago though.

Remember the cabbages if they got a question wrong.

TheNaze73 · 04/10/2016 18:22

Oooh I could crush a grape.

And I remember Ed Stewart before him. You're not alone op Smile

ijustwannadance · 04/10/2016 18:22

I would assume you are 40+.

inboxmehun · 04/10/2016 18:23

I'm still being ID'd for alcohol at 39................

So? I'm not, but I'm younger than you. You made the comment about Crackerjack, the comment about showing your age didn't come as a comment about your looks!

AmeliaJack · 04/10/2016 18:28

But Crackerjack was a long time ago.

Presumably it was a lighthearted comment from this person.

What has being ID'd for alcohol got to do with anything. "showing your age" doesn't mean. You look old it just means your cultural references are widely different to that person. He probably doesn't know who the Flumps are or Chorlton and the Wheelies but that's not his fault.

ghostyslovesheep · 04/10/2016 18:29

cabbages or kings?

I am 46 and remember it well Grin

Pistachiois50pmore · 04/10/2016 18:31

I find it weird when people don't know stuff from before they were born. I was born in 1981 and I don't remember Crackerjack but I know what it is (largely because all of the 70s nostalgia TV that was on when I was a teenager in the 90s). I don't REMEMBER the Bay City Rollers or the three day week either but I still know what they were!

StrawberryLime · 04/10/2016 18:33

I'm late 30s and I used to love Crackerjack!
I'm of the Stu Francis era of presenting it, and it was on mid 80s. (around 1984/85 I think)
Used to love getting home from school, turning on the telly before tea and hearing "It's Friday and it's CRACKERJACK!" Grin

I remember the gunge tank game where you could gunge people you knew, and his catchphrases -

"Eee, I could crush a grape!"
"Eee, I could rip a tissue!"

Bring back Crackerjack!!!

Floisme · 04/10/2016 18:35

Why was it rude? What's wrong with showing your age?

moreslackthanslick · 04/10/2016 18:45

A young enough to be my child colleague had some grapes recently and I said before "Eee I could crush a grape!" She then offered me some! Perhaps she thought it was a PA way of asking! 😂

Um, I do think making references to Crackerjack is showing your age though. What's the problem?

inboxmehun · 04/10/2016 18:46

Haha moreslack - I loved this show and the era! - 84/85!

OP posts:
inboxmehun · 04/10/2016 18:47

Because up until very recently Floisme - I was still being asked if I was old enough to buy alcohol in supermarkets so I'm obviously still 22!! or therabout!

I went to see Crackerjack once in the Brownies.
I'm 52.
Do I win?

GiddyOnZackHunt · 04/10/2016 18:48

Oh I hated Crackerjack. Even in black and white.

bruffin · 04/10/2016 18:48

Im 54 ans remember when it was in black and white with Leslie Crowther.

PirateCatOvenGloveOption · 04/10/2016 18:50

I always think of Peter Glaze when I see Francois Hollande Grin

I'm old too!

allnewredfairy · 04/10/2016 18:51

Sorry but you are showing your age. Come on...how old are you OP?
I loved Crackerjack. It's Friday, it's five to five..it's Crackerjack!
I'm 49.

TealGiraffe · 04/10/2016 18:52

I've never heard of it. (Im 30). So yes it is showing your age. Same as when i was talking about the backstreet boys and spice girls to the kids at work, they've no idea, i'm showing my age.

Salmotrutta · 04/10/2016 18:57

Ah!

Good old crackerjack!

Didn't they used to win enormous pencils? Or am I confused due to my great age

Lesley Crowther's daughter was married to the late Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy fame wasn't she?

Salmotrutta · 04/10/2016 18:58

Oh and I'm in my 50s.

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 04/10/2016 18:59

My mum would talk about Crackerjack (and maybe cabbages) and she is 59. I have no idea what it is. I thought it was a Halloween game.Grin
