I know I have reached 'that age' when

I treat myself to an electric blanket.

Now, I will clarify that I don't know what 'that age' is but I feel that my excitement over my new electric under blanket probably means I have reached it!

How did you reach 'that age'?

I love Good Housekeeping, have done for about 8 years Blush

BarryTheKestrel · 07/10/2016 10:49

Me and DH received an electric blanket for Christmas when I was 22. Granted we lived in a very cold unheated flat but it was definitely an 'age' milestone I didn't think I'd hit for a decade or two!
I've also hit the 'age' where a night out is beyond me. I can't deal with the late night or the alcohol or the getting ready before hand or the hangover afterwards. I'd much rather stay at home with a cup of tea, a slice of homemade cake and an early night. I'm just about to celebrate my 27th birthday, I feel older than my mum who in her newly single craziness is always out!

I find myself putting an apron on to do the housework. It sort of gets me in the right frame of mind.

Even better it has an enormous pocket on the front which is handy not just for tissues but for collecting odd socks and detritus lying around.

I've been reintroduced to Capital by the DCs and find myself varyingly saying 'ugh, what is that rabble' to 'now, that's a good tune and at least he can sing'.

They do get exasperated though. 'No mum. It's not Lunch Club Billy.' See I can't even remember. I know it's a combination of Lunch + Another word + A First name.

LunchBoxLewis? Grin

KatieScarlett · 07/10/2016 11:34

I have a cleaning basket. I load it up with cleaning products, assorted cloths, bin liners etc. and take it room to room.
Doesn't everyone? If not, I need to have a another word with my mother.

poppym12 · 07/10/2016 11:36

I got called for a mammogram earlier this year. I thought I'd time travelled and started to panic so i used the calculator on my phone to double check how old I was. I thought mammograms started at 50.

In my area, they're trialling them on younger ladies too. I was a bit relieved. And at least I managed to use the calculator on my phone without any help.

Jakadaal · 07/10/2016 11:51

Clementine I find Woman and Home a bit like the format of Red - good articles, fashion and beauty etc but Good Housekeeping is more practical and I usually keep the back copies and the Christmas edition is a must Wink

JigokuShojou · 07/10/2016 18:38

Kangaroo, much? Can you put a baby in there?

dementedma · 07/10/2016 19:22

Good Food magazine is the one! I actually get excited when the Christmas edition arrives.

Topseyt · 07/10/2016 19:56

I like watching the old Top of the Pops episodes on BBC4, and soon realise that all these favourite songs of mine were over 30 years ago now!!ShockBlush

Pebbles16 · 07/10/2016 20:52

With the electric blanket, my a level teacher recommended it as the best thing as I wouldn't have to heat the room/flat/house just my bed (sometimes in mittens, four cardigans and a coat). So, thanks to Mr May, I was "of an age" at 18!

FarAwayHills · 07/10/2016 21:10

Watching Gardeners World on a Friday night in my PJs and dressing gown and looking forward to bed with a hot water bottle later Blush

ClementineWardrobe · 07/10/2016 23:42

jakadaal many thanks. I'll go for Good Housekeeping.
For the Christmas threads ladies, like on the poncetastic threads, I'm going to try finding the publishing dates of various Christmas magazine editions so I can plan an evening with a pile of cheese, a bucket of Port, and a stack of Christmas magazines. I'll post the dates so others can join in. Sounds better than any form of Christmas shopping.

SailingThroughTime · 07/10/2016 23:55

I have a lovely 1940s housecoat. It's really practical as I'm a spiller. And I love my electric blanket and furry boot slippers (not at the same time).
I hate Good Housekeeping though because it's all anti ageing cream adverts and I think it would be good if we could just lay off all that £50 robbing hope in a jar shite now we're old enough to know better.
I wish there was a properly intelligent mag for the over 50s out there.

ClementineWardrobe · 08/10/2016 00:02

The Economist is good sailingthroughtime, it's the best 'mag' out there, well... it's not a mag it's a journal really, still good though. No guff at all

I still like Christmas magazines though😉

storynanny · 08/10/2016 00:15

I've just had my invitation to do the poo test.
Today I bought a winter coat from Eastex, the "older woman" section in Debenhams.
I don't want to leave yet and join gransnet. I'm still learning how to be the right sort of mother in law and nanny.

JigokuShojou · 08/10/2016 05:39

SailingThroughTime

Try the Reader's Digest magazines. My father took out a subscription for me as a teenager.

SailingThroughTime · 08/10/2016 08:16

Thanks for the mag recommendations. I remember Reader's Digest. My Dad used to have it 30 years ago. And for some strange reason a colleague of DH's who went back to Canada had his subscription sent to our address as he'd already paid the subscription.
They're both a bit 'heavy' iyswim. I like most of the content of GH it's just the ads that wind me up. I suppose I'd like a more middle aged version of Sarah Millican's online magazine but in paper form and that would be impossible without ads.

I was eyeing up Christmas magazines in M&S last week. I might have to treat myself Smile

OohhItsNotHoxton · 08/10/2016 08:31

Those fans are brilliant Jigoku. As is the cool bed mat.

JoffreyBaratheon · 08/10/2016 10:10

I bought a warm fleecy nightdress.

I made a warm, fleecy nightdress...

Jakadaal · 08/10/2016 11:32

Clementine GH Christmas edition is out on 27 October Smile

ClementineWardrobe · 08/10/2016 12:09

jakadaal thanks. Mag day coming soon!!

Dowser · 08/10/2016 12:23

I did the poo test.4 years ago...twice because of abnormalities in the first one.
As a result I had to have the colonoscopy.
I still remember the horror that was the picolax....argh

Thankfully I've seen where the sun don't shine and all was pink and healthy.

Good luck with yours.

Dowser · 08/10/2016 12:50

I have electric blankets since my 20s

I currently have three. One on bed, one on caravan bed...a must for winter and one in case something happens to the other two.

Apart from caravan one in spring and autumn, I barely need them now.

KatieScarlett · 08/10/2016 15:30

My friend bought me a fleecy nightdress. For no reason.
(Secure in the knowledge that I'd love it)
