Oh my friggin god it's cold. Feels like Antarctica in here. Honestly, think Olaf my new tenant!

Kids room monitor says 21 DC? Surely that's incorrect. I mean, I can't be that old that I'm feeling the cold already?

Please tell me others have the heating on in these subzero (OK, slight exaggeration there) temperatures that is the north today? Grin

My DP hates the warm, I love it. Fortunately he's on nights this week so it's kind of a guilty pleasure to put the heating on as soon as he leaves the house Wink

No heating here yet (London). The air felt cold outside today though.

TellMeStraight · 02/10/2016 23:31

Oh dear, this is something else I don't get.

My heating stays on all year.

I don't do any of this turning the heating on and off for the seasons nonsense.

My thermostat sits at 20. If 20 is a comfortable temperature in November, then it's also a comfortable temperature in June. So the heating stays on and the thermostat kicks in when it needs to.

raviolidreaming · 02/10/2016 23:33

Heating clicked on at 14 this morning in west of Scotland - no wonder I was cold!

JaceLancs · 02/10/2016 23:33

My very ancient heating system has no thermostats and is controlled only by timer dials and valves
It gets switched on after bonfire night and switched off on April fools day
If anyone is cold outside that it's throw on extra clothing and wrap up in a blanket
I'm in the north west if you couldn't already guess!

Whathaveilost · 02/10/2016 23:34

I don't get these debates about putting the heating on. People coming on saying it's only September, October, November whatever.
If you're cold put the sodding thing on!
What's your problem?

HennaFlare · 03/10/2016 18:16

EXACTLY Tellmestraight ! Why does nobody else ever agree with me on this?? Set the thermostat so your house is comfortable and you don't need to fiddle with it all year. That's the point of a thermostat!!

mamapants · 03/10/2016 18:21

I'm pretty sure we started using the log burner about early Sept last year. So far we haven't used fire or heating. Not cold yet in North Wales.

DesolateWaist · 03/10/2016 18:21

I agree. My heating is always on (for an hour in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening) If the thermostat decides it's below 17 (yes 17, I'm old fashioned and believe in wearing jumpers), then it comes on. No need to turn it on or off.

Tummelthecat · 03/10/2016 18:33

Its bloody Baltic! Of course we need the heating on!

Monkeyinshoes · 03/10/2016 18:41

Put the heating on. If you feel somehow guilty about that, tell yourself you're testing it before it gets freezing and all the plumbers are busy fixing everyone else's heating.

(Though that's not a bad idea...we found the pressure was climbing well into the red, blocked pipe to expansion vessel says the plumber man who's just fixed it.)

Kornerkutta · 03/10/2016 21:30

Just put it on for an hour. Feels good!

FeelingHotHotHotOhYeah · 03/10/2016 22:10

It's on! And I'm still frozen! Does feel nice when near radiators though.

BingBongBingBong · 03/10/2016 22:14

I'm another who keeps the heating on but keeps the thermostat at around 21ish. It comes on if it's cold. The last few days it has come on a few times as it's definitely getting chillier!

ohtheholidays · 03/10/2016 22:16

Yes I put it on first thing this morning for an hour and last night my DH put everyone's duvets back in they're covers.

It was lovely earlier(were in the SE)me and my DH went to a gardening center and then we came home and did some gardening.
But this evening I had to stick the heating back on for an hour just to try and warm the house up a bit.

Whiskeyjack · 04/10/2016 08:29

My parents in law use the calendar to judge the cold. I don't get it. We use the termostat!
They can afford the oil heating and have already bought their winter fuel for the open fire. All last week they were freezing, because of where they live and their house is very cold. They were sitting frozen looking the fireplace, already laid out with wood. But it was only September so they couldn't light it.

shrunkenhead · 04/10/2016 08:36

A pp asked what the problem was? About turning the heating on if you're cold.....For many it's the cost....

atticusclaw2 · 04/10/2016 08:40

I put ours on for a couple of hours last night until the DC went to bed (with hot water bottles and their winter duvets on). Then DH and I turned it off and snuggled on the sofa under the heated throw.

My heated throw is literally the best thing I own. It costs pennies to run.

cluelessnchaos · 04/10/2016 08:40

Deepest coldest Aberdeenshire here. The amount we spend on oil no way it's going on yet. Wood burner been on twice though

PuntCuffin · 04/10/2016 08:48

We haven't even got a boiler at the moment, so no chance of putting the heating on!

atticusclaw2 · 04/10/2016 08:53

Punt I feel your pain. Our furnace is on the blink too. Luckily we have an emergency back up oil boiler but I'm cross that I'm having to use the emergency oil which is intended for times when it's too horrible outside to go out and fetch wood.

ClaudiaApfelstrudel · 04/10/2016 08:58

no absolutely not! I refuse to put the heating on except when necessary and I'm not trying to make you feel guilty but it's people like you OP that are destroying the planet and causing global warming (no pun intended)!

Whathaveilost · 04/10/2016 09:14

A pp asked what the problem was? About turning the heating on if you're cold.....For many it's the cost

I get that it can be about the cost but it is still a ridiculous question to ask because only the posters themselves know how cold they are and if they can afford it or not.

FretYeNotAllIsShiny · 04/10/2016 09:15

I'm another with the thermostat used instead on turning it on/off, but mine is usually set to about 16 degrees. I'll turn it up to 20 if it gets really cold.
