But a berlingo is the size of a bloody van Shock

We have a RR recovery centre, about 3 warehouses from a soft play in our village. The huge fun buses take over the whole area, whilst the RR's park, generally, sensibly.

midcenturymater · 01/10/2016 21:09

I live in the US. The city I live in, they are driven by status conscious people who love a bit of bling. Therefore they are viewed as tacky and not aspired to in any way, unless you are a blinglover. They are ridiculously big and unnecessary for what most people need I agree. The idea that anyone might envy the car someone drives made me giggle. Are there really people who envy cars? That just sounds so silly.

GoLightlyHollie · 01/10/2016 21:09

I have a RR Sport. I'd say 25% of my street do and the rest own the X5 or the Q7. The RR is an awesome car to drive and I love it.
It's a rather sweeping generalisation, OP. I think you are trying to be (newly learnt mumsnetism) goady. I could make sweeping statements about middle England, daily mail reading busy bodies driving Ford Mondeos, but that would be churlish.

misson · 01/10/2016 21:15

I too live in the back end of nowhere. Moorland and hills, with snow and flooding rivers in the winter. We've been here 10 years and can count on one hand the number of times a 4x4 would have been handy.

Lots of off road vehicles for towing, animals, field etc. No fancy ones though and certainly no rr. I am always Confused by the argument that they are good for rural living.

As for the pp who felt people moved out of her way on motorways because they would come off worse. Or words to that effect. ShockShock

PickAChew · 01/10/2016 21:16

father do you live in my village? I have to take the kids in to the road to walk around the massive range rover which has pulled up next to school covering the whole pavement & grass verge

If you can possibly squeeze past on the pavement, you do that, making sure to bend in the wing mirror, just to fucking annoy them. I do that automatically to anyone who parks on the pavement, not leaving room for a double buggy to pass.

BlancheBlue · 01/10/2016 21:16

GoLightlyHollie which part of SW London do you live in?

itsbetterthanabox · 01/10/2016 21:17

People don't say the same about work vans because these are as the name suggests needed for a specific purpose to do the owners job.
If someone just owned one for no reason then yeah they are still being stupid and taking up space for no reason.

Hulababy · 01/10/2016 21:19

Meh - one of our cars is a Discovery. Yes, its big and yes, we don't really need a car that big the vast majority of the time. However, sometimes its useful to have a big car with decent 4x4. And you know what? It was DH's choice. He likes it and he drives it properly - no need to take up all the road. He knows the size of his car and drives it accordingly and efficiently on the road. As do I, though less frequently.

He/We are courteous and well mannered drivers regardless of whether we are driving Dh's Discovery or my 500.

Just because some drivers of some cars are impolite road users, don't tar all drivers of those cars in the same way!

TweedAddict · 01/10/2016 21:26

I have mine purely for the boot space. With the mount we need, 3 big dogs plus shopping and kid stuff the only other cars which would suit are the largest estates. But they fugyly and very manish

GoLightlyHollie · 01/10/2016 21:36

Haha Blanche, how did you guess.

JemimaMuddledUp · 01/10/2016 21:40

Today I followed two different Range Rovers. Neither appeared to be equipped with indicators. You'd really think they would be, given the price... ;-)

JemimaMuddledUp · 01/10/2016 21:40

Gah wink fail!

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 01/10/2016 21:41

I do love the fact that people don't mess with a RR. Cars don't get in the way because they know they'd probably feel the impact more so motorway driving is a lot easier.

  1. Yes I often think 'yes a Ford Mondeo ploughing into me at 70mph, well that'd just tickle a little bit, I'll drive like a complete knob.' if you hit anything at motorway speed it is going to be catastrophic.

  2. You drive an Evoque. It is to Range Rovers what the A-class is to Mercedes range. A symbol for those who are status conscious enough to buy anything with that particular badge on it.

silentlyfume · 01/10/2016 21:45

There are seven of them (!!) who park illegally on the school run on our private numbered carpark or the double yellows despite the school offering spaces elsewhere. Three of whom give us shit that they can park where they want. One of whom has a 'sponsored by Daddy car sticker.

I live in a fecking city not bloody emmerdale.

AppleJac · 01/10/2016 21:51

I have a 4x4. Its not a range rover its a sportage (im not sure if that comes under the fake 4x4 as a previous poster mentioned).

I dont need a 4x4. I never go on country lanes. There was nothing wrong with my old car i just loved the look of a 4x4. My neighbour has a range rover but on a lease and i always admired it.

We work hard, we never go on holiday etc so i wanted to spend my money on a luxury car that i ve lusted after for years.

Im not middle aged, quite abit younger but i am blonde and over weight so i fit your bill of your stereotype owner.

NancyJoan · 01/10/2016 21:55

Hideous things. Unless you live down an unmade road, are a vet who picks up injured deer at the roadside or regularly tow a horse box or similar, there's just no need for a 4x4. Almost everyone I know has one. I am very anti.

Blu · 01/10/2016 22:16

Hmmm. DS has just been raving about the Evoque and it's off-road abilities - he went on one of those driving experiences. Allm sorts of stuff about how they carry on going with one wheel feet in the air, and how the brakes automatically adapt to ridiculously steep slopes, etc etc. They do do awesome stuff off-road. However, I am almost certain that the vast majority I see being driven round my area of 'not-the-suburbs, even' S London have barely seen a muddy puddle , let alone a fell or a moor or a horsebox that needs towing. People are paying thousands for technology you just don't need in Sainsbury's Car Park. That baffles me.

However, it is a free country and all that....BUT when I am manoeuvring along a cramped city street and, as often happens, there would be room for two ordinary cars to pass, but not room for my narrow, ordinary car plus massive Audi Whatever it is, et al, I conclude that the problem is not being caused by me, so I do my best not to be the one to wait. In other circumstances I am relaxed and chilled about letting people go, etc, but I get fed up with 'Size and Might have Right of way'

JustChillin · 01/10/2016 22:27

I'm finding this thread a bit

Mine's a Freelander.

So is it the footprint of a RR that annoys you? There are plenty of wide & long but flatter cars out there- do these annoy you too? Or is it because the Rovers dominate with their height?

I'm 31 and my hair is a yucky mouse colour. I'm not overweight but I've always wanted nicer legs - they could probably do with a shave too.
Hey, I should change my car for a Berlingo so I can become nice and slim like you!

What hair colour do you have?

Geez.

OrangeFluff · 01/10/2016 22:41

I drive on country lanes every day to get to work. I have an Astra, it's never been a problem!

claraclutterbuck · 01/10/2016 22:51

not sure where you're getting this crp from but it is a Range Rover and it actually turned the brand around after the recession.*

From Range Rover stock market announcements? Their sales are up but their profits are down as they are selling more cheaper cars. They make more money by selling their more expensive brands.

TSSDNCOP · 01/10/2016 23:07

My RR lets me get over my mum and dads in snow to salt their road so all the olds can get their Fiestas out.

I'm fat, blonde and middle aged. But the Silvers love me.

A tiny piece of me would die if I had to drive a Borlingo.

Blu · 01/10/2016 23:54

If I lived the lifestyle where one would be a rational choice, I would LOVE a Defender.

We went in one all round mountainous unmade roads in rural Portugal - fantastic, any ruts, slopes, water, mud, gravel, rocks, VRRRuuummmm. Ace vehicles, doing what they are built to do.

But as I live in S London, but do a lot of camping, I have the biggest boot space to vehicle size to ratio possible. Judging by the number of MNers suffering partial death inside over the thought of a Berlingo, my car could cause mass wipeout, should a crowd of RR drivers glance at it simultaneously in Sainsbury's Car Park.

UmbongoUnchainedInAPearTreeeee · 02/10/2016 00:00

Grin blu wha car do you have? I love cars. I've had so many different types. Have a special place in my heart for dodgy old estates!

OrangeFluff · 02/10/2016 00:19

I'm wondering where you live TSSDNCOP? Scotland maybe? I live in the West Midlands, and only once in the last 5 years has there been enough snow that I couldn't drive (I had a KA at the time).
