Don't need such a big fucking car and should buy something else amd stop taking up most of the fucking road.

'I don't have one but this whole "it takes up too much space on the road' argument really is nonsense. If you look at car specs, you will see that the foot print of many 4x4's is not much different to many estate cars and yet you never get threads about "oh those bloody Passats/Renaults/Citroens/BMW's" do you?? Granted, they are much taller which makes them look bigger but the road space argument doesn't hold up. '

Not true. A Range Rover has a full 2m of width. A BMW 5 series estate (another popular choice in the same price range) is around 187cm. That is a full 5 inches different, the difference between being able to get your kids out the back in an adjoining space and not. Also the height is an issue, as you cannot safely see the traffic in front if you are behind one of those behemoths on a narrow road.

WaitrosePigeon · 02/10/2016 10:35

My husband isn't insecure because he drives a RR. Are you ok?

Anyone who outright buys a depreciating asset like a new car is basically a mug.

No, we just don't want to be in debt.

WaitrosePigeon · 02/10/2016 10:36

I can't say we have a fuck you attitude either.... lots of projecting going around here.

Navy, I'm getting sucked in againGrin

JackShit · 02/10/2016 10:58

They are purchased to outwardly display wealth.

WaitrosePigeon · 02/10/2016 11:00

Is that a bad thing?

I can't say we personally walked into a the garage thinking 'we are going to buy this Range Rover to let everyone know how much money we have'. It's also a slight moot point as a lot of people have their cars on finance, so may not actually be that wealthy at all...

Anyone who outright buys a depreciating asset like a new car is basically a mug.

Or just someone who makes their own choice as to what they spend their own money on.

"it takes up too much space on the road'

Many 4x4's footprint are not actually any bigger than many estate cars or people mover type things.

Hulababy · 02/10/2016 11:23

There are a lot of very unpleasant people on threads like these. And, looking at this thread, it is NOT those who might have 4x4s at their homes.

Madbengalmum · 02/10/2016 11:30

Absolutely agree, they are now driven by twunts. Had two range rover sports and new shape range rovers, when sports came out over ten years ago. Wouldn't have one now, because most people driving them are twunts and everyone else on the road hates you. None such vitriol in a different make of car! Unfortunately, the most special twunts IMHO are those who drive the cheapest model, the evoque.

claraclutterbuck · 02/10/2016 11:36

claraclutterbuck I suggest you look at company profits pre Evoque. it's obvious any company makes more from the more expensive products they sell but to say the Evoque 'has damaged the company almost beyond redemption' is one of the most ridiculous unfounded things I have read (as well as the Evoque not being a Range Rover when it clearly is) As a PP has also said, the Evoque is one of the motor industry's biggest success stories!

I have however now they have issued profit warnings as they are selling too many cheap cars and not enough expensive ones. The cheap evoque has damaged the brand image for the more expensive range rovers- it has changed the image of the brand. The client profile has also changed. I am not saying that it didn't save the brand however they need a mixed economy to be successful and the more expensive cars are not selling well enough.

They have identified themselves that they need to up the sales of the traditional range rovers.

The evoque is nicknamed the hairdressers car within the industry.

To add - I dont own a range rover.

crazydaisies · 02/10/2016 11:52

We're all rather car-ist, aren't we?!
Lets chill out on this Sunday morning and bring some love back into this world.

jbee664 · 02/10/2016 11:56

I wouldn't exactly call the Evoque cheap! It was a strategic decision by JLR to enter into a different platform and market segment and has given them a vehicle to enter into the global markets. The Evoque hasn't damaged the brand just strengthened it and given the company more diversity. They could have stayed as a 6 car , low volume company like thy were under Ford ownership but instead have grown and entered new markets - making profits that were unheard of just 5 or 6 years ago. The Evoque was the turning point that allowed them to do it.

I lecture in Business & Economics so have studied this closely since the recession.

Hairdresser's wages must have gone up if they can now afford Evoques!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 02/10/2016 12:05

They are "nouveau" anyway, the real upper classes, the real upper classes would be more likely to drive a battered Defender

Who the fuck is looking to emulate the "real upper classes" anyway? Most of us "nouveau" types (or hard working self made people as I prefer to call them) don't give a monkeys what Lord Tosspot drives: we are quite happy with our extremely comfortable spacious cars.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 02/10/2016 12:15

You are talking £35k for a Landrover Evoke by the way, it's not a cheap car. I don't have one and I would find it a tad wide but they are extremely nice to drive and be a passenger in, when we tried one I was quite won over.

Actually our Defender (which is three years old and not battered or scruffy) far from being a depreciating asset, is apparently worth more than we paid for it a year ago as they have been discontinued and are very desirable cars.

MyBoysHaveDogsNames · 02/10/2016 12:20

Both of my 4x4s are tricky to park sometimes, but I am always a courteous and considerate driver.

I do admit thought, the Porsche is easier around town Grin

UmbongoUnchainedInAPearTreeeee · 02/10/2016 12:20

or hard working self made people as I prefer to call them

This!

I much prefer the way I'm treated now that's in a wealthy wanker in a rang rover then the watch people treated me when I was a single mum on benefits living in a refuge for abused women.

jbee664 · 02/10/2016 12:25

tinkly - you're so right, the Defender will def have gone up in value - now an iconic collectors item!

Tiredandtested · 02/10/2016 12:49

We live rurally and lots of us have 4X4, most knackered old Pickups with grass growing out of the windows.
The only people I know with RRs live in the nearby towns.
Why are they always so clean?

AlbertaDewdrop · 02/10/2016 13:03

Half the price of the Range Rover though. Much less than the new XC90 or any of the BMW offerings.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 02/10/2016 13:21

Well yes. I have driven and been a passenger in a Range Rover too (we have had a lot of courtesy cars while our Defender has been in the garage). The Range Rover is fantastic, Especially for taking a tribe on a long journey. I would love DH to swap to one if we had £70k to burn.

Personally I am happy with my BMW though.

Madbengalmum · 02/10/2016 13:50

Evoke is the starting model and is just a tad over the price of a sporty golf, which would cost you around the 30k mark. 70k would buy you a good range rover sport with all the bits. For a range rover 70k would buy you very little, with some bits on you are looking at nearer 100k.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 02/10/2016 14:03

Really Mad? Well I didn't like the Range Rover three times as much as the Evoke.

MitzyLeFrouf · 02/10/2016 14:08

It's the white ones I hate. They're the automobile equivalent of a (very big and very, very expensive) white stiletto.

FlourishingMrs · 02/10/2016 14:17

So what exactly is wrong with buying a comfortable car for the family if you can afford it. A lot of us have worked had for the privilege to not have to squeeze kids, bikes etc into a small car.

Any way ladies Porsche or the new Mercedes GLC? Whilst I don't object to the RR I currently have an Audi Q5 for ease around town but would like to change it.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 02/10/2016 14:22
Hmm
