Son's friend looking at animal abuse videos

My son is 11 and recently started secondary school. He has made a new friend, John (not his real name), who has come round to play today. John is also 11.

While DS was in the bathroom, John was on the pc in his room. I heard him say to my DS "Ugh he just ripped the kitten's head off! Come and look!" DS told him to stop but John repeated it again. I went into the room and saw John was watching something cartoony on You Tube with a title about animal abuse. I told him "We don't watch things like that in this house, please turn it off" and told both boys to go play outside, which they did.

A little investigation shows John had typed "Animal abuse compilation" into the search box on You Tube to get the video.

Now I'm aware You Tube won't allow anything graphic but aibu to feel disturbed by this?

I don't know what I would do but I would also feel uncomfortable.

When I was about 15 is was all about the rotten website. Wish I could unsee these things!

So did you speak to his mother?

I would be telling his mother asap and not letting my child play with a boy who thinks this is 'entertaining'

Was it a cartoon like Tom and Jerry?

As with dragon above. Speak with his mum and perhaps discourage the friendship.

Don't rely on YouTube to filter everything. My son has found some horrendous things when researching veganism.

Give a heads up to the school, thats not something to ignore. The kid needs monitoring if you have him over again. But as your DS was disturbed, maybe thats not on the cards.

This is disturbing and I would tell the mother. Btw the way there are more serious animal abuse videos on Youtube, I saw one accidentally was titled something "cute" i just hope he does not find one of these then act it out. Honestly was the worse thing I ever saw in my life, it haunted me I can only imagine what it would do to a child.

I wouldn't have that child round again. Future serial killer right there.

FWIW, I watched all kinds of grim things (including the video about Baby the Bulldog > ) and as a teenager lurching into vegetarianism there were vile things out there.

I am 50, haven't killed anyone and have been a vegetarian since 14yo.
I don't get some voyeuristic kick but I do get pissed when people say "Oh I don't want to THINK about it" , oh yes because ignore it = it doesn't happen. It does, and I for one choose to know.
I'm not a bad or odd person for this, I'm arming myself with facts.

Just bear in mind he might not have actually typed in 'Animal abuse compilation'.

He might have typed in 'Animal a...' for 'animal antics' (for instance) and YouTube pre-populated the rest.

It's very worrying that whether he can actually access it or not, that he'd WANT to watch animal abuse. Id definitely tell his mum and the school, and discourage my dc from spending time with him.
