To Stop Going To Aldi Because I Can't Keep Up At The Checkout?

I'm not doing that 'packing shelf' business because that's just loading/unloading the trolley twice. I can't keep up with their Olympic shopping chuck and get my bags packed fast enough though. I should just give up and go back to Tesco shouldn't I?

It's 4.26 in the morning and I'm watching a Trolley Bag promoConfused

Oops, I always pack at the checkout.
No one has ever told me not to.
But I don't do a massive shop so I suppose I am quite speedy and I usually only shop at quiet times of the day.

Yabu. It's the reason we go to aldi and lidl. I hate checkout queues.

To the person that asked 'what will they do?' At our Aldi they start putting the stuff straight in your trolley and point out you are holding up the queue.

Get a big ikea bag or some bags for life so they don't close. I always put the heavy stuff that can't get squashed at front soft stuff at at the back. Open the bags in the trolley, and just throw it in.

Or pack it when you get into the car.

Yabu

Throw it straight back into the trolley. Go past the packing shelf, out the shop and pack the shopping in the boot of your car.

Ta dah!

The trick is lemons! I always buy 4 lemons each week and I get the loose ones and distribute these through the conveyor belt. In the time it takes them to tap in the code each time, I've gained a few seconds to catch up, and start a new shopping bag.

I love the speed too, when I see people with full trolleys ahead it's no big deal as they'll be gone quick! We do the ikea bags thing, put in trolley and then chuck everything into them so don't need packing shelf. It does feel like a workout! I love walking out of there knowing the shop only took 30mins Smile

I would rather save £30 a week and have my shopping chucked at me, than pay more for nice service. I don't want chit chat, I want to go home. I hate shopping as it is. I gave up the hell of online shopping ages ago as I like to pick my own stuff

datingbarb · 01/10/2016 10:10

I never use the packing shelf I manage to get most the shopping into the bags and then throw last few bits on top and put away when loading the car.

You need to load the belt in roughly the right order so first will be heavy things bottles, Tin etc followed by fridge stuff, meats and lastly breads, crisp so the don't get squashed

Have your bags in your trolley open and just load it as you go, yes it won't be that neat if you get one of the super fast checkout guys but its all packed and nothing is getting squashed

PeanutButterLips · 01/10/2016 20:04

When i first went to Aldi/Lidl I was so shocked at the fast pace I just threw everything in my trolley but since then I prepared haha
I have three big sturdy bags open and pack as fast as I can there's usually 3-4 items stacked up as I pack so not bad

mathanxiety · 01/10/2016 21:51

They only sell fruit and veg in bags in my Aldi (US). They must have copped onto your lemon trick, Judester.

There is actually no way anyone could bag more than one or two items at mine. They have ginormous trolleys that the cashiers position so the the shopper's end/handle end pokes the shopper back from the teeny tiny three inches of shelf between the cash box and the trolley. The only person who can touch the groceries and put a hand into the trolley is the cashier. The cashier lifts the items off the belt with the right hand, swipes the item, transfers to left hand and puts it in the trolley. You are left standing at the card machine watching.

We used Aldi when we were on our holiday this summer. My 8 year old stood awe struck by the till and said " wow Mummy isn't he fast. It's not like Tesco is it!"
I don't think I ever quite got the nack of keeping up at Olympic bag packing but I enjoyed trying. It made me laugh but then I am a bit of a big kid!
