To Stop Going To Aldi Because I Can't Keep Up At The Checkout?

fakenamefornow · 30/09/2016 16:48

I'm not doing that 'packing shelf' business because that's just loading/unloading the trolley twice. I can't keep up with their Olympic shopping chuck and get my bags packed fast enough though. I should just give up and go back to Tesco shouldn't I?

Pull out the shelf? What shelf?

Big bags open and ready and things grouped on the conveyor. You get quicker. I go alone once my kids are in bed and I'm complemented on my speed by the checkout staff > (I am tres dull)

FlyingElbows · 30/09/2016 17:34

I'm very proud of being faster than our lidl top speed scanning bloke! It gives me the vapours though, it's so stressful trying to get a whole trolley load on the belt before they start scanning. We just fire it in to the trolley and pack in the car park where there's nobody near (not that I'm antisocial and weird and hate people at all!! Wink)

Jmangel · 30/09/2016 17:35

Do you know I just brazen it out and have my bags open and ready so that I can chuck everything in the bags as quickly as possible - I never go to the shelves at the back - total waste of time. No one has ever said anything but I am super quick. Think it helps that I go just after school drop off when it's quiet so there's no one waiting impatiently.

SaggyNaggy · 30/09/2016 17:37

When we did weekly shops at Lidl I wouldn't bother ith bags at all. Blush

I'd fill my trolley, bung it on the conveyor, bung it back in my trolley and then directly into the boot, then get home and unpack direct from boot into cupboards, firdge, freezer etc.

CaveMum · 30/09/2016 17:39

You have to load the trolley in the order you intend to pack, so for me it's cold/frozen stuff first as this all goes into a cool bag, then heavy items like bottles, tins, then box items like cereal, then soft stuff/breakables like bread, cake, eggs, etc. I don't buy fruit and veg in our Aldi so don't have that to worry about.

I used to work on the checkout at Sainsbury's as a student so have some sympathy with them over slow-packers Wink

Twatty · 30/09/2016 17:40

Pull out shelf is at the bottom of the big lidl trollies.

The till guy told me about it. You just have to remember its there when walking out or you bash your shins on it Grin

CMOTDibbler · 30/09/2016 17:40

I like the challenge! Big solid bags like the Sainsburys ones with a flat bottom, things on the conveyor belt so they get packed in the right order, no problem Smile

If I couldn't keep up I'd fling in the trolley and then pack into the car boot

SianiMoomin · 30/09/2016 17:41

You need Trolley Bags! They have revolutionised my Aldi shopping experience!

Plus you put heavy stuff at the front of the belt and squishable stuff at the back and then just chuck it all in. Sorted!

Sunnymeg · 30/09/2016 17:44

They cannot insist that you don't pack at the till. They may prefer that you do, but they cannot insist. I had confirmation of this from an ALDI manager.

bigbuttons · 30/09/2016 17:45

I don't bother going faster than I want to. I am spending money at their shop and I'll pack the way I want.

Cellardoor23 · 30/09/2016 17:50

I bloody love Aldi. If it wasn't so far away for me I would do my food shop there all the time. I love the efficiency, no idle chit chat and it's cheap.

I need those trolley bags!

MistressPage · 30/09/2016 17:52

I've always just packed my shopping into bags in the usual at the checkout in Aldi. I didn't even know about the packing shelf rule Blush never been challenged tho

KirstyJC · 30/09/2016 17:54

Urgh I hate it when people in front of me insist on packing into bags. The whole point is that you pack it later - either on the shelf on into the boot of your car (weather permitting). Why do you think they have such small areas after the checkout? It is meant to be all chucked into the trolley and that keeps the queues moving more quickly.

The shop near us used to tell people off for putting it in bags at the checkout but now they don't, so instead we all just tut and sigh internally rage about how people are SO entitled that they think the rules don't apply to them....yet say nothing Grin

OP - if you can't do it the way it's designed, then it would be best for you to go to Tesco. And stay out of my way Wink

MunchMunch · 30/09/2016 17:55

I find it easy, once I've handled to milk/bottles of pop them everything else is subjected to the "slide and chuck". Slide the item away from the scanner with one hand then give it a slight chuck, your other hand is in the trolley ready to guide the item into place without it crashing down.

littlemissneela · 30/09/2016 18:07

This is why I think we havent gone to our new Aldi. We shop in Lidl a lot, do our main shop their, and we pack everything as it goes through the till. Dh and I are super fast at it, sometimes waiting for the checkout person to scan Grin
What would you say was a quiet time of day for your typical Aldi, so we can see if its the same as Lidl, or if we ar right to steer clear? Smile

ChasingAPinkBall · 30/09/2016 18:11

My local Aldi sell special trolley bags that clip onto the sides of the trolley and are massive so you can have 2 of those and just shove everything straight in. You don't have to worry about them folding over and they're wide at the opening so you can literally fling stuff in.

Realhousewivesofshit · 30/09/2016 18:15

God no Aldi is fantastic. Just put all your goods back in your trolley and pack them in the bags at your boot.

Best possible value. We shop for 5 adults now kids teens and can get all out meat, steak, chicken, mince joint of pork/beef and fish with vegs, pasta, sauces, all the vegs for less than £100. Per week. All branded goods cheaper. Bloody fantastic.

The same at tesco, sainsburys etc would be at least £50 more.

Also the staff are helpful and polite but quick.. Bloody hate the chatter at Asda etc. I like to be in and out. 3 isles, no bollocks to pass by and all there. Perfect.

PuppyMonkey · 30/09/2016 18:16

I love playing beat the checkout person in Aldi. Grin

I also have one big IKEA bag and one big Sports Direct Bag.

Place both in trolley open on entering store.

Put shopping in bags. Don't forget brioche buns and Limestone Coast Chardonnay.

Unload at the till, ensuring you have an identifiable "start loading into second bag now" marker. I usually have toilet roll.

Tip the stuff into the bags once scanned and start the second bag when you see the telltale toilet roll.

Look smug with yourself.

Pay.

Go home.

NapQueen · 30/09/2016 18:16

I pack into my boot. Fill the trolley whilst shopping, fill it again at the checkout. Walk out the shop and in the boot have three IKEA bags open. One for fridge, one for freezer and wine, one for cupboards.

Return trolley.

SoleBizzz · 30/09/2016 18:19

Someone ran out of our local Aldi the other day with a pile of meat they hadn't paid fir. I was at the front of the till being seven and three cashiers including mine ran off. I was waiting fifteen minutes@

SoleBizzz · 30/09/2016 18:19

Served not seven

dalmatianmad · 30/09/2016 18:20

I find shopping in Aldi so much quicker, I place 2 or 3 of their reusable bags in the trolley after I've loaded it on the conveyer and then stick them in the bags as they get scanned. Never had an issue and don't feel particularly rushed. There's no way I'm doing the packing at the shelf thing!

sdaisy26 · 30/09/2016 18:21

YABU

Big IKEA bags or those trolley bag things & you can just chuck it all in - no need for repacking. I love how quick the whole checkout experience is.

toomuchtooold · 30/09/2016 18:21

I live in Germany and they do this at all the supermarkets, even the posh ones, and at our local one there's no packing shelf! The locals can pack at that rate while carrying on a convo with the cashier. It is very impressive to watch!

TheHiphopopotamus · 30/09/2016 18:30

I do so love Groovy Biscuits that it is a small price to pay

Sorry, OT but are they the ones that used to be called Disco Biscuits until a few years ago? Made me lol every time I saw it.
