to go to OOH with tingly boy?

stealtheatingtunnocks · 25/09/2016 11:31

8 year old boy, fit and well.

Gets double vision in the mornings for about a year, and "wobbly eyes" in class - nothing found by optician, waiting for hospital optician appointment.

Went a bit deaf for a few days in one ear last week.

Said a few days ago "why does your body go fuzzy, mum?" described vague tingling and floating feelings in arms.

Today, since he woke up at about 7am - has pins and needles in both arms, both legs and is definitely weak. Is able to walk, but, slow and can't do things he usually would. Can't touch his nose with his finger. nystagmus tracking a finger. Is tired, pale, bags under his eyes but eating.

I know enough about neurology for me to now be properly concerned, but, am aware that I am also liable to being a bit neurotic as our other son has been very unwell for a few years with a different condition.

WWYD, he's probably a bit viral, there's been bugs going around the school - is it ridiculous to go to OOH? Am I that neurotic mum and just need to have a cup of tea and a cuddle?

I have nothing actually useful to add.

I hope you and Small have as easy and productive an appointment as it is possible to have. You can do this. In a few hours it will be done and you can spend this evening with your family knowing that you have done the very best you can for Small.

I hope Small is able to stay calm, patient and cooperative so that the doctors can do their very best for him.

With you & small OP. Rtft. Been where you are. Turned out to be epilepsy in our case. She's now coming up for 36, & advances in neuroscience is casting doubt on original diagnosis. WTAF. 30+yrs of anti-epileptic meds. She has had over 20 grandmal seizures, so don't know what's going on?

SquawkFish · 12/10/2016 16:15

Yoksha Was she particularly stressed at the time or had she been involved in a traumatic event or someone close to her dying?

stealtheatingtunnocks Thinking of you. At very least I hope you feel listened too and supported, and of course I hope your little dude is OK. I have epilepsy so if it does turn out to be that, please feel free to message me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Met the world's nicest medic yesterday.

Small has very slight changes to reflexes on left side, but, not of themselves, a concern.

Most kids with a vague history with few objective signs have a "functional" diagnosis - not exactly making it up, but, they believe their loss of balance/wahtever is real. It's a psychological response to stress. The problem with that as a diagnosis is that Small is a sparkly wee thing and he talks freely about things that worry him. So, I'd be very surprised if he was troubled by something and I didn't know. Of course, I'm unlikely to be objective about that, every mother is.

There are a couple of rare myositis things which fit the pattern. And a couple of genetic things. So, he's to be admitted for tests next week and will be run ragged to try and bring on the symptoms first. Good idea!

I asked him directly whether he thought there could be something sinister. "I am keeping an open mind. But, I want to assure you that I see nothing here which requires treatment today. This is a well boy who may have something neurological in nature or who may have something functional in nature. We will investigate and find out more. Sometimes, it takes time for conditions to make themselves clear, and sometimes we never get a definitive answer. But, we will try".

I have a massive crush on the medic. He was lovely.

Small is currently slumped in front of the tv, sore head and nausea. Perking up, am hoping to get him into school this afternoon. Poor kid's fed up.

Thanks for the posts, it really is helpful to be able to be honest. I have to minimise to protect everyone else.

Don't mind saying that yesterday I was knackered and went to bed at 6pm and had a good cry. Quietly, into the pillow. Emotionally draining, this stuff.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 13/10/2016 10:27

Professional - hope your wee one's perking up. There are a lot of very odd viruses going around, apparently. Higher number than usual of kids being left with neuro signs.

My other son had a viral meningitis when he was about 8 which left him with very odd tingling and numbness. I'd forgotten that, actually, so thanks for the reminder, I'll mention it to Smashing Doc. They did various nerve function tests on him, found slow conduction time, all settled down in about 6 months.

We could maybe have an MN clinic with Smashing Doc?

magimedi · 13/10/2016 13:18

Thank you for updating - the medic sounds wonderful & I am so glad Small has been seen by someone who is obviously competent & honest.

Not surprised you are knackered - take care of yourself & Small. Flowers

TheTyrannyOfMAGENTA · 13/10/2016 14:31

Glad you were seen by such a fab doctor and they took you seriously. Best of luck for the tests next week.

FrankiesKnuckle · 13/10/2016 16:35

I have been watching this thread but this just occurred to me since you said he's had viral meningitis....
a friend of mine has had viral meningitis twice now, a period of 20 years between the 2 confirmed diagnoses. She's had episodes between of ?vertigo/migraines, poor concentration and often snappy and aggressive when she's usually a very placid and chilled person.
She did some internet digging and armed with Dr google went back to her GP for the Nth time.
She now has a theoretical diagnosis of Mollarets meningitis.

I'm not posting this to cause alarm, but it sounds vaguely similar. I do hope you get to the bottom of it. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mollaret's_meningitis
