Neighbour issues - hedge problems!

I apologise in advance for what will probably be the most boring post of all time! Soo, long story short ..... Moved into our new house around 6 months ago, next door neighbours are very friendly and welcoming, and will often stop to chat over the fence etc. We hear a lot about the older gentleman who owned the house before us, and how the garden used to be immaculate and the pride of the street etc. To start with this was fine, but eventually it seemed that every time we spoke the fact that the garden used to be so wonderful was brought up, and by implication was no longer up to standard. I'm not a keen gardener by any means, but it's been kept (relatively) tidy, grass mown, occasionally weeds pulled, patio brushed etc, since we moved in. We're renovating so everything inside the house is very much the priority at the moment but the outside is fine by most standards.

So, the crux of the issue. At the bottom of our garden is a conifer hedge, which had grown to well over 8 feet by the time we'd moved in. I arranged for someone to come and cut it, and while it wasn't a pristine job, it was far better with 3ft off the height. The next door neighbour's gardener had also quoted for the work, and was over £200 more expensive which I really couldn't afford.

Following the hedge cut, NDN complained every time I was in the garden about what an 'awful' job had been done, how it was a real bodge, etc. He caught me off guard one day and asked if I wanted his gardener to sort it out - I was rushing and non-committedly said 'yes, maybe'. So she comes over that day and says it will take around four hours at £15 an hour, which I agreed to thinking it would help neighbourly relations given that NDN is obviously quite put out by the newly trimmed hedge. (I really didn't think it was that bad, nor did my keen gardener parents). Fast forward to today and she comes over with an invoice for £190!!! Saying it took much longer than expected to rectify the previous hedge cutter's shoddy work! I was away when the work was carried out so can't verify how long it took, but basically feel like I've been shafted. I wouldn't mind an extra couple of hours but feel this is extortionate, but am also in a catch 22 because I don't want to sour relations with the NDNs by disputing it. So more of a WWYD really? Pay or say it's unreasonable?

How long is your hedge?? We have a 23-metre boundary with conifers and leylandii and it costs £500 to have them all lopped and trimmed right back (one side only).

Your neighbour is an interfering old busybody and his gardener has shafted you.

DO NOT pay any more than the £60 - does it look like someone has spent hours on the hedge? - this is a basic rule of business: you don't charge any more then agreed at the start of a job.

If you start a job and it looks like it's going to cost more, you go to the client and let them know first.

And with your neighbour in future, I'd shut down any garden chat pretty quickly. They sound mad.

15 foot?????

She trimmed the back of the hedge? Then she is a loon. Who the heck cares about the back?? She's a chancer and a twit.

Has she got a FB page or website? pay her the £60 and leave her a shitty review.

I agree re always being busy in future when the NDN wants to rhapsodise about the previous owner. Cultivate a faraway look, and an air of vagueness

And say, wistfully, "oh I know. I remember my old neighbour with fondness too, we barely knew he was there..."

So she trimmed the back of the hedge facing your neighbours house who'd been complaining about the state of the hedge................ Confused

12 hours?????
Used to take me half a day max for a fence much much much longer, taller and wider, including breaks to deal with children and animals, hanging out washing etc ...
Must have used nail scissors.

Oh god, you really are scared of this confrontation aren't you?

It doesn't matter how good a job has been done. It could be the most beautiful topiary ever with gold plated statues atop that took her a whole week to do. Doesn't matter. You accepted a quote of £60. That's how much you pay. End of.

If it took the gardener 12 hours to do a 15ft conifer hedge she needs a career change.

We have a 130ft long conifer hedge which is about 10ft tall and Dh can cut it in an afternoon and this involves being on top of a step ladder and moving the ladder along.

Just cheerfully hand over the £60 for your share and act surprised if she mentions you paying the whole bill. Of course you're not going to pay it!

That's our garden. 100ft long and 30ft wide (ish)
Honestly it's about 4hours to do it.

Do you want us to help you work out how to handle it now?

When the gardener handed you the invoice, what conversation was had then? How was it left?

I think this will set a tone for the future, if you don't confront her on this it could and up her wanting to railroad you again. If your renovations affect the exterior she could stick her nose in again. I really feel for you, I don't like confrontation but I don't like the piss taken either. Why a field needs a good view of your hedge I don't know! Does the hedge extend through to your neighbours? What does she have at the bottom of her garden?

This is the conifer hedge in my garden. It is now 12 feet tall by about 50 feet long. The gardeners cut two feet off the top with loppers, tidied it up with petrol trimmers, cleared away all the mess in about an hour and a half. I pay £20 per hour per gardener and have two gardeners.

If you back down now you will be posting about this for years to come as they rip you off left right and centre. If the gardener realised it was a huge problem, she should have stopped work and waited to contact you.

it wasn't a huge problem, but they recognised someone they could con. Imagine if you were an elderly person on your own, look at it that way, would you let them screw your parent in this way?!

Don't pay it - they're having a laugh! If you're worried about confrontation write it in a letter and hand it over with a cheque in full and final payment for £60. Don't let them rip you off. Fgs who trims the back of a hedge!

Cheeky bloody gardener! I would also hate the confrontation but this is outrageous and feels like sharp practice. Please, please only pay the £60 and use SoupDragon's excellent bitch-slap next time you are talking to your next-door nightmare.....

I'd pop an envelope though the door with a note saying you've enclosed the £60, as agreed. Pretend you haven't looked at the invoice and leave it up to them to raise it.

If it's face to face confrontation you hate, but still want to go ahead with what has been suggested on here why not email the gardener. Write out all the reasons you are going to be paying 60.00. Print out the email and send with a cheque.

Mmmm, this sounds dodgy as hell to me - has your NDN had their own hedge trimmed or other gardening work done at the same perchance Hmm

I would express your shock, remind them that you were told 4 hours not 12 & that given the amount you are having to spend on the house etc, you just cannot afford that kind of money, then ask for the contact details for the gardener so that you can discuss it directly with the person who has invoiced you.

I suspect your NDN is pulling a fast one

Either way, sod the niceties, they are not nice people & are way to invested in the upkeep of YOUR property - tell them to MTOB

Good luck
