Strikethrough?

Meadows76 · 22/09/2016 10:16

Is this some sort of replacement for the good old fashioned grammar? I don't understand why people type and score something out? Most of the strike throughs are on things which would ordinarily be covered by either a comma or some brackets.

No fucking idea really

BarbaraofSeville · 22/09/2016 10:41

Most people use it as 'did I say that out loud', in a joking way of admitting to doing something socially unacceptable.

For example, I might say that 'last night I had a bottle glass of cava.

Thatznotmyname · 22/09/2016 10:43

whocares sarcasm

ArmySal · 22/09/2016 10:45

Some not mine can be humorous.

ReggaeShark · 22/09/2016 10:46

Love 'em.

Elephantsaremygods · 22/09/2016 10:47

They're meant to be things you wouldn't say out loud.

I think you've misunderstood the point of them had a sense of humour fail.

Hagothehills · 22/09/2016 10:48

Yeah I think they're often almost always just a bit tongue in cheek really

maddiemookins16mum · 22/09/2016 10:48

I can never work out how to do it on an iPad!!

LurkingHusband · 22/09/2016 10:48

Most of the strike throughs are on things which would ordinarily be covered by either a comma or some brackets.

Only strikethrough adds something you can't convey with brackets. A demonstration that - maybe under different circumstances - the struckthrough word would be appropriate. Or that's how I read it.

Oysterbabe · 22/09/2016 10:49

It's used to show things you think but shouldn't say.
For example:
My friends' DS is a little shit spirited.

Slave2thecat · 22/09/2016 11:00

Strike throughs serve a different grammatical purpose, it's for words that shouldn't / don't need to exist but yet are a useful part of the narrative (usually to add humour) for example why did I click on this thread? I'm supposed to be working

Borisisback · 22/09/2016 11:01

YABU very unreasonable

Meadows76 · 22/09/2016 11:03

Most of those examples make perfect sense, thank you. I think my confusion has come from overuse get a fucking grip by some people?

OP posts:
Meadows76 · 22/09/2016 11:04

Should I say incorrect use rather than overuse?

acasualobserver · 22/09/2016 11:04

Sometimes it's hard to see the reason for them or the effect the writer intended.

I think the odd sentence or phrase it can be quite good

An entire paragraph is very hard on the brain eye

Rachel0Greep · 22/09/2016 11:10

I can never work out how to do it on an iPad!!

Just put the. before and after the words you want to strike out

Meadows76 · 22/09/2016 11:15

Nothing wrong with them. I wasn't suggesting there was, I was questioning because it is something I didn't understand. Thanks to a few helpful replies I now understand birth why people use the, and why I sometimes didn't understand the use.

OP posts:
toffeenose · 22/09/2016 11:15

It's supposed to be as if you were writing something by hand, wrote something, realised it was inappropriate/rude/revealing in some way and crossed it out so it only makes sense if the strikethrough is before the unstruck, if you see what I mean. It's annoying when twats well-meaning people get it wrong.
