Sorry for the slightly odd title. I could think of how best to condense it.

At my school, parents living 1/2 mile or so away drive to the school, park about 200m from the school gates, unload their child's scooter and/or bike and then let their child ride the 200m to the school gate before carting the bike/scooter back to the car.

Aside from the fact that cycling or scootering on the 200m outside the school can be dangerous because of all the pedestrians walking, is is not really bizarre behaviour? It takes ages with all the loading and unloading of bikes and scooters - why not just let your child scooter or cycle the whole 1/2 mile?

Can someone please explain this?

Maybe the parent then drives directly to work after they've done the drop off and don't have time to walk the half mile home to fetch the car?

Maybe the school does rewards for cycling/scooting to school? So the child can then say quite truthfully 'I arrived on scooter'.

But yes, you'd think it would be a lot less faff to simply scoot/ride there!

Yabu. There could be hundreds of reasons to do this. Here's some:

1. Road really bumpy/uneven/dangerous close to their house, but not, in their opinion, close to the school.
2. Kid loves cycling/scooting and doesn't get a chance to otherwise, for a whole host of reasons.
3. Parent hates the traffic and parking so close to school, but needs to make a quick getaway to work.

I could go on, but cba.

user in which case why bother with the bike/scooter at all? Let them go to the park or something when they have time, a busy pavement outside a school is not the best time/place to be scooting for fun.

At least some who do this are going straight home. But even if they need to go to work, it would probably be quicker for them to leave the bikes/scooters safely at school and walk home to their car to then drive than it seems to be with faffing putting the things into the car.

And there are no rewards for walking/cycling/scootering at school currently.

Do parents do this at other schools?

I do this when I have the time. Yes, it's a total faff. I even make up weather forecasts to avoid it (It might rain later, so no).

But I live further away from our school and we park, scoot or walk further away also. They can let off a bit of steam before or after their day.

Its not hard to know where other parents live or if they work when you all live in the same village.

It's weird.

I do this as dd loves to scoot but I can't get home quick enough afterwards to get to work on time. It's a compromise that works for us

Why don't you ask them?

perhaps it just takes too long all the way from home.
