My child watching awful things on youtube

I thought I had a child block on the computer from watching inappropriate things. Have been blissfully ignorant. My 6 year old types in things to youtube like horrid henry, postman pat, paw patrol - just been viewing the things he has watched and am mortified. Yes it's Horrid Henry clips with overdubbing on them - talking about dicks, hard ons, fucking and all sorts. Paw patrol with the pups being horny or being murdered. He hasn't sworn to me yet but bloody hell. I don't want to completely block youtube. Am I a twat in not doing something already to safeguard him from this crap and if so, please tell me what to do so he is watching age appropriate stuff? He is on a total ban for now. He thinks I am mean. Don't really understand who would turn a children's cartoon into this.

I have an 11 year old daughter in Year 7. She's been using YouTube since the age of around 5 and posts her own videos too. Me and my wife have had no problems so far, other that the occasional weird video popping up in search. She had her first phone at 10, and due to the Family Link app DW installed, she couldn't use any of her usual apps. We tried to change her age to 13 so she could do the things she loved, but it was no good. My 11 year old is mature for her age, and she HATED YouTube kids. I wouldn't recommend YouTube kids to ANYONE. Unless you have a 3-year-old, they wont be interested, and even there we saw some generally disturbing content.

There are some very sick and twisted individuals out there, who get kicks from knowing children will unwittingly watch.

Report the videos, and YouTube may take them down, although I'm not sure of timescale and they will appear again.

This is partly why I was so shocked that people give their WiFi passwords out to their children's friends. You literally have no idea what they are doing online.

This would be a great opportunity to bring everyone's attention to elsagate. Please Google it ASAP. Its very real and sounds like you stumbled upon an example of it. Also look at the subreddit elsagate for examples. Horrible stuff

Parents need to take responsibility and not be so naive to when it comes to exposing kids to the dangers of using the internet. There's so much available on tv, dvd, iPlayer, Netflix etc young kids should not need to go anywhere near YouTube.

Our ‘9 and 7 year old aren’t allowed unsupervised access to YouTube, so yes you do ban YT completely unless the child is sitting in a room with you and you can hear and see what they see.

They’ll survive without it, ours do. For that age I suggest you use BBC iPlayer for CBeebies it CBBC or Netflix with the kids filter on so they can’t watch anything over a PG.

I don’t let my 8 and 10 year olds on iPads unsupervised. Or on you tube at all. I hope you’ve learned your lesson.

I will get shot down in flames but hey ho. Parents, you know what shit is on the internet but you shove tablets, phones etc into your childrens hands to make your own life easier.. You have no-one to blame but your self.
Would you give your child a porn mag ? No, of course you wouldnt so why give the worlds biggest porn device ?
Stop moaning and start taking responsibility for what your child see, hears and reads on the internet

I know this is a zombie but just for the record, I don’t think this is an example of elsagate. Obviously I’d have to see it to be sure, but it sounds like when people voice over horrid Henry, peppa pig, Tracy beaker etc with rude stuff for a laugh. It’s targeted at the sort of people who are old enough to be on YouTube, ie teenagers.

They’re actually very funny, they just make fun of the programmes. Not intended for 6 year olds at all, but for 16 year olds searching up the old programmes they used to watch.

The child will be 10 by now so I would guess that they have moved onto a whole other set of issues.
