My child watching awful things on youtube

I thought I had a child block on the computer from watching inappropriate things. Have been blissfully ignorant. My 6 year old types in things to youtube like horrid henry, postman pat, paw patrol - just been viewing the things he has watched and am mortified. Yes it's Horrid Henry clips with overdubbing on them - talking about dicks, hard ons, fucking and all sorts. Paw patrol with the pups being horny or being murdered. He hasn't sworn to me yet but bloody hell. I don't want to completely block youtube. Am I a twat in not doing something already to safeguard him from this crap and if so, please tell me what to do so he is watching age appropriate stuff? He is on a total ban for now. He thinks I am mean. Don't really understand who would turn a children's cartoon into this.

I don't understand why people are talking about sign up ages and accounts.
I don't go on there much but I haven't been asked for any info about me to view any videos.

Yes Jacqueshammer it's so easy for them to be watching something fine, but one click and it's not and they can't tell themselves as they look so similar.

Some videos that are marked for 18+ require you to sign in but most don't.

You can't police YT. Even the kids app will let slip some very inappropriate things. Best thing to do is sit with a child that age while they're browsing so you can see and hear everything.

So many parents let their dc watch YouTube. Just stop it and put CBeebies on.

Not everyone can, We can't/don't watch BBC or Live TV, we don't have a TV licence. YouTube and Netflix are fine as long as you keep half an ear open to what they are watching. My 7 year old watches YouTube on her kindle and we watch it on the big TV too.

Why do youtube need to sort it out?Grin
No, either stick a dvd on, get the children's youtube app or supervise them!
It's not youtubes job to look after kids or stop showing videos incase little children see them!
These aren't for small children.
There are lots of cartoons that are for adults and def not for small children!
Family guy, american dad, pets, rick and morty etc
Some of the dubbed kids shows are hilarious.
Youtube is for 13 anyway Hmm

YouTube is an app on our telly. How do we remove it?

He's 6. You need to supervise him on YouTube. If you can't because you're cooking or whatever then he has to watch cbbc or a DVD

Actually I think YouTube and other media online outlets have a responsibility to manage their content instead of leaving it to users and parents.

Of course parents should be monitoring. But they should adopt the same principle as shops whereby they don't have porn mags on display for children to see, for example, or TV channels have a watershed.

Why should we take the risk of letting children be exposed? I just don't understand it.

I feel the same about porn and Internet service providers.

They don't have them in display though believeitornot You will never see graphic videos on their homepage, you have to actively search for them or go furthur into the site so your comparison to shops and porn mags doesn't really work. Letting children have free access to the internet is akin to handing them the tv remote after 9pm and letting them crack on. Frankly I don't want to be asked a billion times how old I am before it will load a page that contains references to sex or violence. It is a parent's responsibility to restrict their children's access to things you don't want them to see. The raising of your children is not your isp's problem.

You don't need an account to watch pornhub either but you wouldn't expect that to be filtered. You just wouldn't let them on it. Because it is inappropriate. Like parts of youtube.

Really YouTube needs to sort this out

YouTube are not your childminders. Waterstones has books not suitable for a child but if parents take their DC there it's for them to supervise what they take off the shelf.

If you are in the UK and you have a TV you need a licence and "we don't watch BBC" is not an excuse. One fine day they will catch up with you.

Kids You Tube.
Children in the same room as you.
Volume up so you can hear what they are watching - sitting where you can see it if needed.
Check history regularly to verify.
Make sure all parental controls are put on that you need.

Try copying and pasting all of my post. Where did I say that? I said parents have a responsibility but so do online media companies.

"the Internet" is just a platform for sharing information. There should be better protections around that. Just because it's virtual, doesn't mean that the onus is only on the user to be monitoring content.

In some cases it is difficult to do so. Why risk it? Why not have media companies and parents both taking action?

What about children of parents who don't give a fuck? Is it okay for them to be exposed because their parents, through no fault of the child, is too lazy to do anything about it? That's OK as long as it isn't your child? Hmm

So why should other adults be penalised because some parents can't be arsed to parent.

YouTube is a site designed for adults. Some of the user content has been added that' suitable for children, but if you let your child use it you do so at your own risk. Lots of parents allow their children watch 18 rated films and play 18 rated games too. It would be equally ridiculous to suggest they were all changed to make them suitable.

And ISP porn filters are completely unworkable and would likely leave children at greater risk.

I think that I t's both parents and internet providers responsibility. It's not going to be effective in the future to just let the Internet be a free for all OR for parents to let their kids roam free on the Internet either. Ideally we should work together. It's not really helpful to just say 'keep your kids off it until they are 18 or you are next to them'.

This has always happened historically in other media, in the cinema there are clear guidelines, on TV there are watersheds and options for parental controls on sky etc, with books there are clear sections in the library, even with music. I just think we've not really caught up with ourselves yet, as parents or providers, we are all just trying to get on top of the potential risks and benefits, and how to balance them both. A better grading parental control on You Tube would be great - although I do think because of stuff slipping though the net that young kids need supervising. It's the teenage years where they move to autonomy that are trickier. IMHO.

I don't actively police. I check it every now and then sometime in listening in when they don't know I'm doing it. I don't go through everything.

i have always worked on the principle that there is a lot of adult stuff on the Internet. You tube or not you are one click away either accidentally or deliberately. You can choose to watch something that is adult but you could find it upsetting and it can be damaging to watch adult stuff before you are ready. If you do I'd rather you come to me and talk about it and why you felt the need to keep watching it.

So far never had any problem. DD is inclined to over self censor, DS has limited interest anyway.

I do go ape shit about watching proprietary stuff on you tube. If you want to watch Ceebies or a film you watch it on I player or buy the DVD.

I end up totally confused by people that grab the moral ground on supervising what they children watch but are more than happy to teach they kids it's OK to steal watch stuff you should be paying for for free.
