My child watching awful things on youtube

I thought I had a child block on the computer from watching inappropriate things. Have been blissfully ignorant. My 6 year old types in things to youtube like horrid henry, postman pat, paw patrol - just been viewing the things he has watched and am mortified. Yes it's Horrid Henry clips with overdubbing on them - talking about dicks, hard ons, fucking and all sorts. Paw patrol with the pups being horny or being murdered. He hasn't sworn to me yet but bloody hell. I don't want to completely block youtube. Am I a twat in not doing something already to safeguard him from this crap and if so, please tell me what to do so he is watching age appropriate stuff? He is on a total ban for now. He thinks I am mean. Don't really understand who would turn a children's cartoon into this.

My dh didn't understand my aversion to youtube. Until the day he put blues clues on for my 6 yo and I walked in to find her watching them all shoot each other and shouting motherfucking this that and the other and screamed at him to get this fucking shit off the tv now (Whoops!) and went a bit mental at him. I think he gets it now! My youngest has the kids app. My older two found it frustrating as they couldn't see the latest videos uploaded or save their favourite vloggers etc.

I'm with StarryIllusion, it's not YouTube's job to ban something because someone decides it is 'inappropriate content' for their child.

Granted, the dubbed cartoons are not appropriate for kids, but that shouldn't mean that grown-ups can't enjoy them. AdultSwim, for example, is a cartoon, but it is aimed at adults.

There are plenty of apps, DVDs, and channels out there aimed at children, so if YouTube is not appropriate, simply don't use it.

I found that explaining channels to my DS worked. We talked about the fact that there are some videos that might scare him or upset him and it is my job to stop that. He can watch certain channels e.g. stampy's channel but if he wants to watch a video on another channel he has to ask first. If he makes a mistake and clicks on something else I've told him to be honest about it, we all make mistakes and it might be we can add the new channel to the list anyway.
This works for us at the moment as DS is very sensitive and actually doesn't want to watch anything he shouldn't. I'm not sure this approach would work for all children though.

Some inappropriate content still manages to slip past the filters on the kids YouTube app though Sad

I agree YouTube could do with a PG type setting. My DC are 10 and 11 and too old for the 'baby setting'. We have a lot of talks about 'what to do if you accidentally watch something gross' and I spy on them more than I would like to need to.

Its really bad that because its tagged with childrens cartoons it goes under the radar, why i dnt let mine wear headphones. As a parent just learn fron it all we can do really maybe complain to youtube? But ultimately its our fault as they are children, its happened to me once.

Yep you need YT Kids

They block all those naughty videos

There is a kids youtube app u can get on your phone but it might not filter things like that.

StarryIllusion "Why does YouTube need to sort it out? They're your kids, you parent them. Young teens shouldn't be on YouTube and are not actually allowed an account. There is a kids one, use that. I hate this whinging about content nowadays. Expecting isps to take responsibility for what people's children see. Uh no, you are the parent, you supervise them. Don't expect a piece of software to do it for you."

I agree with every single word of that.

DS has Kids YouTube, but if he watches it on any other device (ie. My phone when we're out etc.) I have them linked to my account or make him log in on my account. That way I can go to the history and find a full list of what he's watched.

Thankfully it's all Stampy and DanTDM.

DS is ASD and absolutely hates swearing, so if he finds a video with bad language he tells me and asks if he can report it. It's only happens a few times and I've had to explain that he can't report videos for using the word 'stupid', lol!

This whole thing of kids watching you tube instead of appropriate TV channels mystifies me. My 7 year old has never been allowed to have unsupervised access to anything like that. He watches his programmes on kids TV channels and the occasional documentary which he asks us to record from BBC or whatever. He doesn't own his own tablet and only gets on our I pad or pc if we are in the room with him.

Stop being lazy and just sort out the kids version or parental controls. If you have kids and technology you do need to take appropriate steps. Failure to do so may expose your children to inappropriate content.

Did you know: YouTube requires account holders to be 18, but a 13-year-old can sign up with a parent's permission?

13. Not 6!!

Get some parental controls in place. Or put the iPad away and get your dc to play...

Youtubekids has everything he could possibly need. No way should he have access to you tube unsupervised.

My ds likes to watch truck videos and Lego videos that are only on YouTube. He only does it under supervision even with controls on. I have a good look round the videos he's likely to want when he's not around so I know what ones to select quickly. He is not allowed to choose randomly for himself, we sit and watch them together. If I can't watch him that closely then it is a ceebeebies app or TV. I don't have a YouTube app on the iPad so he can't get into it if he's on one of his apps.

It does seem a bit lazy TBH that you have just plonked him in front of YouTube and effectively told him to crack on. He is 6, he is too young to be on the Internet/you tube at all especially without constant supervision.
Put on a dvd, CBBC, or if you have Netflix or Amazon prime that would be ideal (but still sort the parental controls)

DS 6 is obsessed with FGTV on YouTube, I'll need to see if that's available on the kids version, which I didn't know existed to be honest.

He uses Netflix for cartoons so I don't think he has come across any of the dubbed cartoons. The problem is I allow him to play the iPad in the living room so I can hear what's going on, it's mostly just the annoying FGTV dad I hear but when I'm not home DP will allow him to take it into his room and use earphones, I've told him that I don't want him doing that but of course it mostly falls of deaf ears. I know in these times he has watched clips of people playing Call of Duty and GTA (DS is dying to be 18 to play these games, as he keeps telling me, apparently all his friends in school play them, which I know is crap, it's one little boy only who is allowed) DS knows this isn't allowed but can't hold his own water and proceeds to tell me what he's watched with a little grin on his face.

I do have parent controls but I suppose YouTube can slip through the net.

There is some cartoon My Little Pony stuff on YouTube that's very sexualized. Unless it's a site like IPlayer, it's a good idea to pre-watch anything your kids will be watching online. And bear in mind that autoplay could mean that a harmless kids clip is followed by a not harmless one.

I know a 9 year old allowed to roam watching minecraft videos on YouTube. You can tell it is intended for adults because she occasionally let's slip a phrase that is inappropriate and that she clearly doesn't not even know the meaning of. It is horrible to hear.

If I'm making dinner or something I set up colouring or whatever at the table while I'm doing it, technology use is for when I'm there with them. They know this and it's fine.

We always check what DD wants to watch and if it's ok she can store it as a favourite. These ones she can watch without us. All other things have to be vetted first or we watch it with her.

She is 9 and I doubt it will change anytime soon.

Bananasinpyjamas1 you tube kids app does filter all the inappropriate stuff out

No it doesn't. It filters more of the inappropriate stuff than YouTube proper but to say it filters it "all" out is misleading.

My DD is 9 and she watches Minecraft videos on YouTube Kids. ALL are vetted by me first and she never watches anything when I am not in the room.

Yep we had this problem - now YouTube only in the presence of a parent (or DSS who's 15 and would turn off anything inappropriate) but mainly Kids YouTube for when a parent can't so closely supervise.
