..annoying. AIBU?

Why can't you just put your foot on the foot brake like normal people. Tsk

I was a big advocate of using the clutch and not bothering with the handbrake.
Then I broke down on the motorway as I had worn the clutch to the bone and got a 1.5 K bill on a 3 year old car. They put it down to driving style.

So I use the handbrake all the bloody time now. And I've changed my car because 1500 quid after just under 3 years is bloody ridiculous and makes me sick! But that's another thread

Goingtobeawesome · 21/09/2016 20:27

In gear but with hand break = car lurches forward.

passmethewineplease · 21/09/2016 20:28

YABU.

And wrong.

For all the reasons mentioned already.

NerrSnerr · 21/09/2016 20:31

Going no it doesn't (if done properly) I will leave in gear with handbrake and you take handbrake off when you feel the bite. No lurching.

DropZoneOne · 21/09/2016 20:33

I do handbrake neutral. It's how I was taught. And it stopped my car lurching into the car in front when I was hit from behind at a set of lights. If you know the lights, you can judge how long you have and put into gear at the right time ready to move away so no delay.

When did we get so busy that an extra second at traffic lights putting car into gear caused such a problem?

Goingtobeawesome · 21/09/2016 20:53

Nurr, I am wondering if I meant it lurches when the engine is turned off with the car in gear.

pollymere · 21/09/2016 20:54

It's fine, the problem is actually the people who don't observe the lights and change back into first during amber. I'm usually stuck behind those ones!

IFinishedTheBiscuits · 21/09/2016 20:55

My clutch cable snapped at traffic lights on a very busy roundabout in rush hour about 20 years ago. After ten very stressful minutes two lads in a van pushed my car off the roundabout, but I've been nervous about putting unnecessary wear and tear on a clutch ever since.

Justaboy · 21/09/2016 21:00

Bearfrills Yes had one of those today arrogant c* in a range rover was doing a good 70 he was one car length away as he couldn't get past jabbed the brake lights a few times didn't take the hint so i dropped back from the car i was allowing in case i had to stop least wally behind would have a bit more time to react might stop him smashing in the back of my car!

Finally he came past pratt was using a hand-held mobile phone! Just where are the police when you need 'em eh?.

Female relative once used to at most any stop put the car in neutral plus handbrake on then would have the clutch depressed and be doing some 2500 to 3000 revs whilst waiting.

She just said that's the way I am going the do this and I'm not going to change my ways to what you think i should do!

Not the sort of car you'd want to buy second-hand;!

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 21/09/2016 21:03

Glaring lights and wearing out the gears by keeping them in gear Hmm great idea.

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 21/09/2016 21:05

I mean the wearing out the clutch.

Kanga59 · 21/09/2016 21:07

* YABU .You are meant to put your handbrake on when you stop. My colleugue and her dd were knocked down on a zebra crossing by a car which was shunted from behind by another car. If the car which hit them had had their handbrake on it would not have happened. As it was she sustained serious head injuries and her dd was lucky to escape unscathed.*

But the foot brake is far more effective and powerful than the handbrake. Maybe this driver was just sat in neutral (sadly)?

when I'm on a country road waiting to turn right, I want my foot on the brake. not the pathetic handbrake on.

Kanga59 · 21/09/2016 21:08

I drive an auto so not too concerned with the clutch!

OP posts:
Squabblesallaround · 21/09/2016 21:12

Why would you not put handbrake on/engine in neutral at lights???

Rests your leg, better for safety and more economical for fuel/gearbox/clutch!

As someone who was in an 8 car shunt and was the only car who didn't hit anyone due to leaving a good gap and having the handbrake on/neutral and can smugly say YABU!

Queenbean · 21/09/2016 21:13

Ok, nice one Kanga. You have quite successfully both trolled and been a goady fucker.

Well done. Huge congrats. What a huge personal achievement this must be for you.

Threepineapples · 21/09/2016 21:16

I used not to but since developing sciatica I take any opportunity to change position and wiggle my feet.

awesomeness · 21/09/2016 21:17

sitting on your clutch just breaks it, i'm Miss 3 new clutches in 18months Blush my mechanic now runs if he sees me and i now drive an automatic

i do handbreak neutral now

Aworldofmyown · 21/09/2016 21:24

If you are shunted from behind you are unlucky to keep your foot on the brake in any way that is effective.

Justaboy · 21/09/2016 21:24

awesomeness What!, three clutches in 18 months?
Can you say why you did that surely you weren't taught that way?

Justaboy · 21/09/2016 21:27

Aworldofmyown Precisely! for that sort of reason. Your handbrake is meant for parking purposes but it can retard a car quite well and once upon a time you were told to use it in an emergency like if your main brake failed which these days is a very rare occurrence since the advent of dual circuit hydraulics.

BertieBotts · 21/09/2016 21:30

It doesn't wear out the clutch if it's fully depressed. If you're touching it all the time while driving yes it will wear out.

Lweji · 21/09/2016 21:30

Why do you even care what kind of break people use?

Pathetic.

Not to the OP, though, how does anyone get dazzled by break lights? Fog lights, I'd understand, but break lights? Really?

Lweji · 21/09/2016 21:32

If the car which hit them had had their handbrake on it would not have happened.

Actually, if the arsehole that hit the car had been more careful, they would not have been hit. It's hardly the fault of the car that got hit.

awesomeness · 21/09/2016 21:35

to be fair, they were 3 different cars, all quite old so for all i know clutches were going when i got them etc and i do have more wear and tear on a car than normal. i wasn't taught that way, just a bad habit i picked up, i do drive 1000s of miles a year, towing too so anything to make it easier

awesomeness · 21/09/2016 21:37

and i now have an automatic towing car and auto day car........i'm not allowed to touch OHs manual
