To think my DD's name is not that unusual....

Her name is Imogen Mary. She is 12 years old. Mary is after my mum, Imogen, well, because I think it's lovely. She has friends called Chloe, Grace, Vanessa, Victoria ((Tori), Layla, Lola, Bethan, Emily etc. I was just looking at threads recently and Imogen never comes up and she said to me today, "Mum, why did you call me Imogen?".

I love the name Imogen. It was on my list for DD and back on for this pregnancy. I can't seem to talk DH round to it though. I don't know any Imogen's, but I don't think it's unusual.

ReadyPlayerOne · 18/09/2016 19:53

I know a load of Imogen's, including my niece. It's pretty.

SnakeWitch · 18/09/2016 19:53

Imogen is a lovely and well used name. However I don't think I've ever come across a child called Vanessa, or many adults for that matter!

maddiemookins16mum · 18/09/2016 19:54

To be fair, it might have been "unusual" 13 years ago, but I know no others. We live near the south coast (Hythe in Kent).

Imogen is what DS would have been called if he'd have been a girl.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/09/2016 19:57

He even looks like a Walter (if that's possible). The most amazing jet black curly mop of hair I have ever seen on a baby!!

It's been popular for years

justdontevenfuckingstart · 18/09/2016 19:58

Imy is my SGD she is 5 (Imogen) lovely name.

TwatbadgingCuntfuckery · 18/09/2016 19:59

No doubt other kids have said 'my mum called me Dave because its my granddads name' and 'my my was called Catherine so I'm called Katie' and so on.

Just curiosity.

My DC asked the same because they have 2 middle names and most of their friends only have one and DC doesn't have their bio dads name and knew I was never married.

PS you can rarely find my name on pencils, stickers and rulers and even now my gran gets silly and buys me pink plastic mugs and glittery stickers just because it has my name on. I'm 31 not 3 Hmm

Only1scoop · 18/09/2016 20:00

Not unusual at all know 3 Imogen's

It's a lovely name

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 18/09/2016 20:00

In 2004 it was no 66 in England and Wales apparently. www.baby2see.com/names/top100ukgirlsbabynames.html

Equivalent to Jay for boys.

harderandharder2breathe · 18/09/2016 20:00

It's a lovely name, not too popular but not too rare either

I have a name that I think is more unusual, it's noteworthy on the rare occasions I meet someone with the same name. I used to hate it. Still not hugely love it

Just reassure her that she can change it by deed poll when she's older if she still hates it then

Crisscrosscranky · 18/09/2016 20:00

This thread is incredibly identifying Hmm

Onenerfwarfrombreakdown · 18/09/2016 20:09

I was just thinking that crisscross very identifying username, daughters name and names of friends, cousins names, description and age of Walter ... Hope you have name changed OP as I'm sure people you know could search for your other threads/contributions easily?

Careforadrink · 18/09/2016 20:20

My friend has an Imogen. It's the most gorgeous name. Timeless

Very uncommon around here though. I don't know any others and certainly nothing like Jay for a boy.

I think she gets Imi for short. So cute.

Although I think my mate regrets it a bit as it's mispronounced a lot. Emma Jean lol

TheLastHeatwave · 18/09/2016 20:20

Imogen is a nice name. Not over used (here anyway) but also not 'out there'.

Would she like you, or her friends, to call her a shortening of her name?

I tried really hard to get my parents to call me a nickname when I was about 11. Most of my good friends, their parents shortened their names or had other nicknames for them. My name shortened isn't another proper name (like Samantha being Sam) it's a non name (like Imogen being Immy). My parents were having none of it. They just said if we wanted to call you 'Immy' we would have & 'pumpkin' or 'insert cute nickname' is just silly.

It's hard to explain how I felt, but sort of not as close to my parents as my friends were to theirs. I felt that they didn't listen to what I was saying, nor care how them not going along with what I wanted to be called made me feel like my name & my identity belonged to them & not to me.

I get that they hated my name being shortened (it's not as nice as Immy) to the point that they'd tell my friends off for shortening my name too, even now I flinch when one of my friends does it in earshot of my mum. But it's weird to hear them call me my full name 😁 But would it have been that hard to choose something else that they did sometimes occasionally use (pet, tuppence, love) or something similar & call me that more often for a while? I wasn't asking for an actual name change, just a nickname 😁😁

YouOKHun · 18/09/2016 20:21

My 14 year old DD is Imogen. When we chose it the only other Imogen I could come up with was the actress Imogen Stubbs. I really didn't want a name that could identify a particular birth year or fashion. Since then (as is always the way once a name is in your focus) I've come across quite a few and it's definitely on the published top 50 name lists in a way it wasn't 10 years ago.

Dahlietta · 18/09/2016 20:24

Assuming your daughter was born in 2004, Imogen was that year the 67th most popular girls' name in England and Wales, with 799 of them born. The most popular was Emily, with 5399. I'm a bit of a nerd.

MerryInthechelseahotel · 18/09/2016 20:25

I was thinking exactly the same. You have a big posting history op! Are you not bothered about being identified? (Love the name Imogen though!)

It's got a pleasant level of popularity in that comfortable middle ground between a familiar safe name, but not overly popular and particularly identified to a small age group.

SumAndSubstance · 18/09/2016 20:31

Yup, only 163 Ruths born in 2004. 264th most popular girls' name.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/09/2016 20:31

I think it's lovely! I suggested it for dd's dc2, since she was stuck for names, but 'she' turned out to be a boy.

SumAndSubstance · 18/09/2016 20:33

(I'm a nerd too!) Wink

RaeSkywalker · 18/09/2016 20:36

DH is very popular around here. Lovely name.
