No we shouldn't thought police people. But yes, he should be 'slapped down' with extreme prejudice, he's talking about a high risk form or 'employment' that is mostly only taken up by women. It comes with an incredibly high risk of rape and physical violence. If he's said something equally offensive about a race or religion they'd be distancing themselves pretty quickly.

Those who work in the sex industry, for the significantly most part, do so because of a lack of choices afforded to them by their lives.

Just...ridiculous. And insultingly so. One would hope politicians would be debating ways to make our society safer and more equal so that people (women, mostly) would have more choices than dangerous, and often degrading, means of making ends meet.

As an accountant (which took years of study!) I think it's a ludicrous comparison! Although I'm intrigued to know what skills the careers service would advise you to work on

All joking aside, I'm in no way against prostitution; it's one of the oldest professions there is. Were someone to genuinely choose that as a job, I'd respect that. The problem is that for most people (women?) it's not a choice but a last resort. That is what needs to be addressed.

I am for the decriminalisation of selling sex and for the criminalisation of buying it (Nordic model).

But whatever your feelings it's most definitely not 'just a job' if the government believes it is what's to stop them discussing it at primary level and having prostitutes in next to bakers to talk about job options.

Or to demand women consider it as a job when receiving unemployment benefits?

They're both fairly old professions and both have their good and their shit moments, but I would argue the long-term physical and mental effects of being forced to work as an accountant and as a prostitute are not the same.

If someone actively wants to go into the sex industry, fair enough, but no one should feel like they have to.
