Just that really. Following on from the "worst advice on Mumsnet" thread-what is the best advice you've ever been given (real life or Mumsnet)?

I wouldn't put a tampon in my mouth

Never say never, I have had over the past few years EVIL wisdom tooth pain, one day when shoving bonjela to the very depths of my mouth it dawned on me that a mini tampon may be just what I needed

Put in freezer, put bonjela on it and bit on it - bloody heaven

I do it with dignity and therefore cut the cord first Grin

2 things:

Life is short..live it. (My own advice to me & others, I'm a nurse, I've seen things, it is 100% true)

Do what you've got to do to get through. (From my best friend on child rearing, New born, absolutely zero sleep for weeks which turned into years)
Removed the guilt and pressure right at the moment she said it to me.

When discussing my marriage many moons ago my friend told me to write a pros and cons list of being with him, cons out weighed the pros so I ltb, best decision I ever made😀

A real life saying, which has stuck with me for years and i've passed on to my kids, has stood me in good stead lots of times:

Never assume. It makes an Ass out of U and Me.

So many times you hear people after a bad avoidable event saying 'oh. I assumed ...

  • you'd shut the door,
  • you'd put the sharp thing away,
  • you knew i wasn't going to be there,
  • you'd tightened the wheel
  • the meat was in date

ect.

You get the picture Grin

A friend of mine used to say "Don't take offense. Take a gate - it's easier." which I find pretty useful.

There's also - more a mantra than advice - "You might not have the adventure you planned to have, but at least you'll have an adventure." I first came across this in the context of outdoor sports. It comes in useful when plans go awry in all manner of contexts.

Oh, and 2 of my dear late dad's ones:

  • If you can't say anything nice, say nothing.


and

  • Don't automatically fill up spare space. There's not enough space in the world.


That last one isn't too catchy, but you know, lots of times i've thought about that and a room has stayed nice and spacious and i've been pleased in the long run.

I think a favourite of mine has to be a line from Baz Luhrmann's song.

Never let anyone in your head you wouldn't let in your house. In other words stop dwelling on people you'd never want in your real life.
Really stops you letting other people (who probably aren't giving you a single thought) affecting your life

I read on here that when people are offensive and insulting or bullying, they are unhappy and bitter and they're just trying to pass the bad feelings on. It's not about the recipient. I've heard this before but I read a few times on here and it made me feel stronger and I just don't give a shit what anyone thinks... It's so freeing!

I love some of these!
Mine is from the poem 'The Desiderata' which is full of great advice, but my favourite line is

"And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should."

I came here to see cellardoor23 beat me to it. Baz Luhrmann here too.

I was going through a rough time at work (the usual mummy track PT nonsense) comparing myself to peers and he reminded me of that line

Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind
The race is long and in the end, it's only with yourself

It's kept me working away even when I've really got down and starting comparing myself to others. It's pointless really.
