Sounds like the horrible virus that was doing the rounds at the start of the year. Vicious sore throat, blocked up ear, cough, struggled to sit upright in a chair for any length of time, much less undertake a long journey then have to go round campus doing lots of admin. It took me 2-3 weeks to begin to feel even vaguely human, but still needing naps in the day, and much longer to get back to usual fitness.

I'd get him to email/speak to whoever he needs to contact at the university to find out what he needs to do, then focus on getting well. This can't be the first time this has happened to a fresher.

Are you sure he can't register online? ds has already done online registration, chosen modules, had his timetable confirmed for the year and Student Finance have confirmed the date of his first payment. Arrivals and Fresher's Week at his university is not until next week.

What a shame, you must both be utterly fed up.

I'd take him to a and e if that's what out of hours suggested. Let us know what they say.

You're not alone in this. We took DD back, but for year two, today. We moved her into her new house then had to bring her straight home. She's been ill for two weeks, seen the dr twice and is still ill. A trip to the out of hours GP at the local hospital has diagnosed a kidney infection. DH and I are supposed to be going on holiday tomorrow, but will cancel if necessary. I hope you manage to sort it out but I guess you won't be able to speak to anyone properly until Monday. If he's going into halls there may be a warden available who could offer advice.

Yes, get him reassessed - if he cannot swallow (i.e. is spitting out his own saliva) then that can be an ENT emergency.

Good luck!

A+E, sounds like a bout of tonsillitis that needs iv antibiotics. Has he been tested for glandular fever? Get in touch with the uni - I'm sure this is not a unique situation. Hope he's better soon.

Did they take some blood off him?
They v likely will have checked for glandular fever (Ebstein Barr Virus) too in that case - you cannot really tell by looking at tonsils with pus on what's what.

Hope he gets some rest tonight.

Ps, my kid earlier this year was hospitalised for a week with similar symptoms - told by GP 'virus' next day when he couldn't swallow took him to A+E and he was triaged into resuss because he was so poorly. Tested +ve for GF and apparently it can cause bacterial infections to run riot.

Yes thank goodness you didn't send him. Get the admin done on Monday, missing freshers is not the end of the world. Some people deliberately avoid it.

Oh dear, I guess it's a good thing it happened now rather than when he was actually there. I hope he feels better.

Hope your son feels better soon OP. I think that natural feelings of anxiety about leaving home are probably making him feel even worse, poor thing. One of my DD's flatmates missed their first (Freshers) week through illness last year, but it didn't have any long-reaching effects. Hope he's soon up and about, and hope he has a great first year at Uni...

Both of my children apparently drank themselves to near oblivion during freshers and did bugger all else, so probably good that he's missing that.

Advise the uni and ensure registration later is secured.
Then don't worry. Freshers Week is lots of partying, mad confusion, hanging around with folk you end up not necessarily being mates for etc. He'll end up rousing the curiosity in his bit of halls. Who is the mysterious person in room 19? They'll be gagging to welcome him when he does arrive.

I feel for you. Has anyone mentioned that it could be quinsy? It is a severe form of tonsillitis and can be a real emergency. If he has trouble swallowing do get him to hospital quickly. My son suffered with this for his first 2 years at uni, after his 3rd emergency admission to hospital they agreed to take his tonsils out. They did the op in the first week of year 3 and he had a couple of bad weeks but hasn't looked back. We had arranged a private operation and he was due to see the surgeon the week after his last emergency admission. It saved us £3,000 but to be honest I wish we had paid for the op the first time he was taken ill.

Grammy my husband had a Quinsey so very painful - sorry to hear that it affected you . I hope it is what they say ie toncilitis he was seen at hospital .
Miss aliza - thank you ! He had finally slept ! Is asking for food ! 😄He was refusing liquids and all food a couple of days ago . The doc who saw him earlier in the week said he was fit to go - I'm so glad listened to instincts and took him to a and e on the advice of the helpline and got much needed medication .
