People either shy and not mixing, or showing off pretending to be some cool person they clearly weren't
So which camp was your DD in?

bigbluebus · 17/09/2016 12:35

Not everywhere has lectures in the 1st week. DS had a couple of ice breaker activities within his course group but I think registration was done on-line. Lectures didn't start until week 2 which is when all students (not just freshers) started. There was much going out and getting drunk as far as I can tell but not much else. Even the freshers fair where they found out about all the clubs and societies wasn't held until Wk 3.

I agree your DS needs to contact the Uni and let them know why he won't be arriving today and to check on the registration process, but he shouldn't worry about missing anything else.

Thanks all
Feel sorry for him and I admit for me as he has been ill for Cple weeks and has got anxious re possibility of not being there when everyone else starts over this time - I've been providing food food , Meds and support for those weeks and I feel like am run out of steam - also I'm not sure I have leave to take him now and I really can't take time to be with him nearby when he gets there as someone suggested much as I'd like to .i will try to get leave but I'm not sure I will be allowed at such short notice .

I hope you can manage to take him down. It would really have panicked me to have missed the beginning registration, intro stuff, tutor meetings, official bits at libraries and computing stuff, signing up for options, all that kind of stuff. I'd have rather gone, feeling awful, and spent most of the time in my room feeling terrible, than miss it! Could you take him there, do a large shop for him so that he has lots of comforting stuff in his room, and then phone/text him lots to make sure he's OK, but otherwise leave him to be ill there? Is there any medical help/nurse/etc on site?

ginorwine · 17/09/2016 18:56

He seems to be in significant pain
He is resisting eating / decling even soft food ,,can't sleep . I don't feel I can take him just yet despite the fact he is panicked . He says he is too unwell ...

I hope he feels better soon - I would get him to ring them about missing registration and check it won't cause any issues. Also for what it's worth all my best friends from uni I didn't meet until my second year, and freshers week was far more fun in subsequent years! I don't think I keep in touch with anyone from my first year actually.

ginorwine · 17/09/2016 19:44

Yes been to doc X 2
Say nasty virus

OP posts:
ginorwine · 17/09/2016 19:49

Is anxious re missing and make him feel worse and he has had pre going wobbles but no panic attack

OP posts:
JinkxMonsoon · 17/09/2016 19:52

Honestly? I think it sounds more like severe anxiety rather than a virus. You said he seemed calmer when it was decided he was too ill to travel. And that he can't eat or sleep and is panicked.

I think you need to have a serious talk with him about how he is feeling. To be anxious is normal, but to be anxious to the point of making himself ill is not. You don't want to take him and then have him drop out by half term because he can't handle the whole experience - living away from home, making friends, etc.

Becca19962014 · 17/09/2016 20:02

He'll need a doctors letter if late/missing registration OP. It's really important (and needs to state why he cannot travel today/tomorrow) as otherwise student finance could not be paid for several weeks, late tuition fees causes problems as he wont be able to register for IT/library services/join clubs etc as he wont be classed as a student. Registering day after arrival implies lectures/work beginning this week, so he needs to find out about impact on that as well.

There will be people there to help him, wardens etc. I lived in my first year with someone with severe flu for the first week (they'd travelled from Washington) who missed everything after becoming ill on the flight over, those of us sharing with him helped out as did the pastoral warden in the block.

Anxiety attacks are difficult to recognise, both for those having them and those witnessing them, so it's potenially possible that is happening - I worked with someone blue lighted to hospital because everyone thought he was having a heart attack, the next day he was home all tests were clear, it was a panic attack. I have a form of them and can totally sympathise.

I hope he feels better soon.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 17/09/2016 20:04

In terms of being ill for freshers' week, I was quite unwell for freshers' week at my university. Nothing serious but was ill before I went, really bad cold and sore throat and had almost lost my voice. I was really worried about the whole making friends thing as I could barely talk and when I did, nobody could hear me! I felt a bit better after the first week but wasn't really well enough to join in with things go out drinking and shout over loud music until the third week in. Actually I still made friends and it wasn't the end of the world. People understood I was ill.

However, as other PPs have said I think you or he should at least ring the university and explain the situation (apologies if you have already said you've done this and I missed it) and check if this is anxiety related. Flowers

ginorwine · 17/09/2016 20:04

But jink
He has temp of 38
Sore throat
Headache
Very large swollen glands
Can that be anxiety ? If it can I'd really want to know - he said desp to go ...

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 17/09/2016 20:05

Xposted with you OP. He doesn't sound well.

whirlygirly · 17/09/2016 20:07

It's not glandular fever is it? I had that in 6th form and it wiped me out. He won't be going anywhere soon if that's the case.

Sounds stressful and miserable, wishing you and him well.

ginorwine · 17/09/2016 20:07

Sounds a bit like a tonsillitis virus my 19 year old had recently. He was really ill for a few days (proper burning up, banging headache, closed throat and unable to eat, barely drink in fact) but he was a lot better after day 5.

I've RTFT but can't remember how long he has been feeling ill.

Becca19962014 · 17/09/2016 20:12

He doesn't sound well, but it's essential you get a GP letter, you'll need to pay for a letter and get it to them ASAP. They (uni/student finance) won't just accept your/his word that he couldn't travel and he'll need medical reassurance he couldn't travel. He will miss out on choosing modules if registration is tomorrow unfortunately, if that was possible for him, and miss his first lectures (I say that as registration is being done immediately).

It sounds like a combination of a virus and anxiety to me (I'm not a doctor though).

JinkxMonsoon · 17/09/2016 20:17

You didn't say he had a fever. I'm not sure anxiety can produce a fever, no.

ginorwine · 17/09/2016 20:20

Thanks all spoke to health service as pain too much now n can't seem swallow
