Dd2 was a climber and so went into a bed from her cot at just over 12 months. It was just a little toddler bed but had drapes from the ceiling to make a little tent.

She'd been in her bed for about 8 weeks when I suddenly woke in the middle of the night. I couldn't see anything but could 'feel' that someone was there. It felt like whoever they were was desperately trying to get my attention, so much so that I actually said out loud 'I don't know what you're trying to tell me'. I then heard a little wail from DD's room, something that I wouldn't have heard if I'd been asleep.

I went into her room to find she'd got completely tangled up in the drapes. They were wrapped all around her and covering her face. I dread to think what would have happened if I hadn't been awake.

Save to say the drapes were instantly binned and I whispered a thank you when I finally got back in to bed to whatever had saved her.

I love these threads! It's pitch black here and I'm already scaring myself Blush

I had a few experiences when I was young and am now to some extent a woo person (though you would never imagine it).

We moved into a flat sold to us by an old lady who had lived there years. She loved the place so much that she had sold it when she was much younger and rebought it years later before selling to us. She was very religious and there were pictures of Jesus and crosses etc on the walls when we moved in. Fast forward a year or so, I came in from work and had a strong feeling that someone was stood in my hallway. Strangely so. I had never experienced anything like this before. I stopped in my tracks and told whatever it was loudly to go away, walked very quickly past and into my living room pretty scared and freaked out. It wasn't a normal feeling. I didn't sense anything else, DH came back from work and couldn't feel anything and we never thought anymore about it. A couple of months later, we were soon to married in a church and went to marriage classes with the local vicar. We told him that we lived in this ladies old flat as she had been a member of his congregation. He then said she had died a couple of months earlier round about the same time I had felt something. Maybe one last visit back to her beloved flat.

Another time I had just moved in with my BF and parents who lived in a very large old victorian house. There were many tales of ghosts and a young music teacher passing away in one of the rooms. It was the middle of the day and I was sat upstairs watching TV in my room. BF's Dad was in the garden, but as the house was so big a long way away. I heard someone shout my name really loud in another room in the distance. I thought 'really?!' and ignored it not wanting to move. Then another time to which I shouted back what. No more this time so I went downstairs to see what the matter was. I got down and went in the kitchen to see that there was close to a fire starting. FIL had left something burning on the stove and the whole place was full of smoke. I turned everything off and went to look for who was shouting me. Saw FIL and explained what I heard and the kitchen and he said he hadn't known about the situation or shouted me. Still gives me shivers that one.

When I was a little girl an elderly couple who lived a few doors down from us passed away, and a woman my mum's age moved in with her child. The child used to talk to the "old man" and "old lady" in the corner of their sitting room quite a lot. The woman told my mum about it and it turned out the descriptions her child was giving of the old couple matched exactly that of the couple who had passed away. Some of it was very identifying. My mum didn't mention it to us till we were adults.

torthecatlady · 16/09/2016 12:05

Sorry! It's a long one!

When I was living at my parents house, we all worked from home. Their office was downstairs at the bottom of the stairs (next to the front door), mine was upstairs at the top of the stairs. So one was on top of the other.

I could hear talking between the two of them, as well a third voice - a man. They often had people visiting the office, also very friendly with many neighbours (a tight community) so not unusual to have visitors.

I poked my head out of my office and leant over the banisters to see who it was being nosy and saw an older man in a pale blue shirt and brown trousers, white hair stood in the doorway (door closed). He was looking towards the office.

I didn't recognise the man, so went back to my office to continue with my work. I later came downstairs for lunch and here's the conversation...

Me: Who was that at the door earlier?

Mum: Hmm? When?

Me: Earlier... (Describes man and what happened)

Dad: No, no one was here. Are you sure?

Me: Yes. There was definitely a man stood there. You were talking with him!

Both mum and dad look at me worriedly.

Dad goes over to the front door. It was locked.

No explanation there, but for many months afterwards - I felt his presence. He did leave though, I'm not sure why.

Strangely, a couple of years later when my dm passed away, we (and many friends) were able to feel her in the house in the downstairs hallway!! It really felt like she was keeping an eye on us.

I'm not sure why but her presence left, again everyone noticed this. The house instantly felt empty and very stale.

Woo!

liz70 · 16/09/2016 12:05

Looks Iike some of you have spirits looking out for you. That's a comfort, nothing to be feared, I'd have thought.

thestarryeyedsurprise · 16/09/2016 12:05

This may out me..

My sister was really poorly with cancer, and said to me I dreamed last night you had a rose tattooed on you, just like your DP. I didn't think anything of it. She then passed away on Valentine's Day, and a week later I discovered David Austin has a pink signature rose That has her name (very uncommon double barrelled name) I then saw a physic about 3 months after her passing and she asked why she could see my sister passing me a pink rose and what did it mean.

WannaBe · 16/09/2016 12:07

maggiethemagpie perhaps, although I only ever experienced those dreams in that house, never before and never since.

Have always had vivid dreams but none which involved presences iyswim.

JaceLancs · 16/09/2016 12:15

When DD was nearly 3 we went on holiday 300 miles away from home to somewhere neither me or DH had ever been to before, every time we were trying to find somewhere looking for signs or reading a map DD pointed the right way before we'd worked it out - it really felt like she'd been there before
During the same holiday we visited a local stately home and she kept telling us what we were going to see in different rooms before we entered them - some of them were unusual things that you wouldn't have expected and I don't think we'd ever taken her to an old house or museum before anyway
We were staying in a static caravan and she developed what I thought was an imaginary friend who she saw in our caravan - when we left I asked if the friend was still there n she looked at me like I was stupid and said 'no Mummy she stays there all the time'
She's now 25 and doesn't remember anything about any of the holiday - pity!

Not as exciting as some on here but I've always wondered if this was a bit woo or just a really common 'mum' thing.
We live in a three storey house and mine and DH room on top floor. When DS1 was about six months old we moved him down to the bedroom on the floor below.
He'd started mostly sleeping through the night but he could still wake up anywhere between 4am and 7am.
Every morning without fail I would wake up about 1 minute before he stirred.
I was quite anxious about him being a floor below (pfb) so maybe I was on high alert but we had a monitor on for the first few months and he definitely wasn't aware or stirring until about a minute after me.
Never happened with DS2. Anyone else had anything similar?

Zaphodsotherhead · 16/09/2016 12:29

Things move and appear in my house (old, converted barn type place). I was cooking at the stove and the lid of an olive oil jar leapt into the air and landed beside me on the stove top, safety pins appeared in the middle of the kitchen floor, a gaming die (one of those eight sided things) appeared in the downstairs bathroom and somewhere on MN is recorded the tale of the appearing fifty quid!

I pretty much just laugh at it. It doesn't hurt anyone, the animals seem unbothered by it, so it's just one of those things.

IWouldBeSuperb · 16/09/2016 12:30

That box story WannaBe! Shock

PJBanana · 16/09/2016 12:30

I'm not remotely into ghosts but I've had a couple of unexplainable experiences.

I was very close to my grandad who died 2 years ago almost to this day. the last time I visited him in hospital while he was lucid, he seemed visibly distressed when I left and said 'please don't leave'. The next time I saw him he was completely out of it and passed away the following day. I'm convinced he knew it was the last time he'd see me.

On the day he died, my grandma called to tell me around teatime. Me and DP drove from where we lived to be with her. On our way, we both happened to look up at the same time and saw a huge shooting star. I like to think it was my grandad saying goodbye Smile

I also had a strange experience at one of my exes houses a few years ago. I always found his house a bit creepy.

Was staying there one night when his dog started going ballistic downstairs. Ex DP, his brother and his dad all went downstairs as it sounded like someone was in the house. Me and his mum watched from the landing and we both vividly saw a dark shape creep across the hallway.

None of them saw anything at all, and all the doors and windows were locked so no chance of anyone getting in or out Confused

liz70 · 16/09/2016 12:31

Not me, but my mum has often heard my older brother's voice calling her - "Mum, mum", when he is actually nowhere near her. Never my voice - I'm the not so psb, so less of a connection, maybe.

P1nkP0ppy · 16/09/2016 12:44

I swear my DP's house has something going on, my DM agrees but DDad scoffs.
Both my DM and I have been walking up the stairs, during the day, and seen a hand on the bannister rail on the landing moving as if someone's hanging onto it while walking along the landing. There's never anyone there but there is a scent of tobacco (none of us smoke or even know any smokers) afterwards.

Individually we've walked down the stairs, in broad daylight and a shadow of a tall man has walked diagonally across the hall and through the wall to the left of the dining room door. DDad admits that the original doorway was there 😱
When they had a patio relaid a number of the old were turned over and found to be engraved gravestones....

Albert42 Yes! Happened all the time with both my DC when they were young. Just assumed it was normal and a mum's instinct thing.

I also used to 'know' when they were about to come down with some illness or other. Not that it meant I could prevent it though, sadly. Was years ago, but am guessing this all stopped by the time they were about 8 or so.

Albert42 · 16/09/2016 12:47

Interesting Liz. I should just say that my DS2 is no less precious! I just meant the anxiety you have when you're a first timer Smile

liz70 · 16/09/2016 12:51

I've already detailed my extensive (10+ years) ongoing experiences, and how I came to understand better what was happening, on a previous thread. After so long the wtf just becomes the norm, really.

liz70 · 16/09/2016 12:53

"Interesting Liz. I should just say that my DS2 is no less precious! I just meant the anxiety you have when you're a first timer "

Ha, ha, I know! I have three equally precious DDs myself. That was just a joke with the pfb term. Smile

dustarr73 · 16/09/2016 12:57

Ladybunnyfluff that gave me the chills.

I remember being out out at a friends child communion party. We where in the house, which have never been too before.

Anyway we where in the kitchen but it was open plan,so the sitting room was right beside it.Well i kept looking in the one spot in the corner of the room.I knew someone was there.

Anyway the took photos and in the same spot there is an orb, standing beside the communion child.

Same house went to teh loo.She has an attic. So anyway waitng on the loo to be come free and i felt something was standing on the stairs to the attic.

I said it to my Sil,who said she had to move the kids as they where being disturbed.Something walking around and pulling bedclothes off them.

I said its harmless just dont go in to the attic,as this i their space. She asked me how i knew but i dont know,i just did.

PageStillNotFound404 · 16/09/2016 12:57

suspiciousofgoldfish and IfAtFirst that was me. It's a long story and I'd rather not type it out again, let me see if I can find the thread I posted it on (it was quite recent) and C&P.

When I was 11 years old I got up in the middle of the night and went downstairs to get some water because I was thirsty. I didn't turn any lights on until I got to the kitchen in case I woke up my parents. Got the drink, turned off the kitchen light, and as I walked around the corner of the staircase into the hallway there was this figure standing by the side of the stairs. It was really tall, all in black robes, and I was petrified. I remember thinking to myself not to react, pretend I didn't see it and it would leave me alone. So I walked to the bottom of the stairs calmly - then ran all the way up, dived back into bed and pulled the covers over my head and lay there shaking.

About two weeks later, woke up thirsty again. By this time I'd convinced myself I'd imagined the thing in the hallway. Went to kitchen, had a drink, turned off lights - there it was again in the hallway standing in the dark. I screamed and ran back to bed. Never saw it again.

Mind you, I was also convinced I saw Father Christmas coming up the stairs once. :-)

PageStillNotFound404 · 16/09/2016 13:05

Found it. Warning: it's very long (sorry) and very freaky, and if anyone can come up with a rational explanation I'd be extremely grateful because I'm generally a pretty rational non-woo where's-the-evidence person, but I've never been able to explain this and it still makes my heart beat faster and the hair stand up on my arms when I think about it, years later.

I was pet sitting for my friend several years ago. She had moved into a sort of small holding right on the edge of a village in the SW, with a huge garden that backed onto trees. At the time she had a right menagerie - chickens, ducks, a couple of Shetlands, cats and four black retrievers, three fully grown and one a half grown puppy. Originally DH had been going to come with me as a little holiday but the dates she ended up having to go away for work clashed with a couple of his medical appointments so he stayed at home with our dog and I went to petsit alone.

It was about halfway through my stay, a couple of nights to go. Late evening, already dark when I heard a massive commotion from the chicken shed, banging and thumping. I assumed a fox or something had got in so went out to check. As I was halfway across the garden the noise stopped instantly as if it had been shut off; by the time I got to the shed all was calm and the chickens were all settled, mostly asleep. No sign of any intruder or disturbance at all, nothing to explain the noise or any indication that the chickens had made a noise. Bit freaky but I didn't (and still don't) know much about The Way of Chicken so I locked up again and left them to it.

As I went back in the house a small black shape ran past me out of the back door and I realised the puppy must have got out. It streaked across the garden and off towards the woods. Cue much cursing, then calling her name in vain. More cursing when she didn't come back. I grabbed a torch and put one of the other dogs on the lead, partly for protection, partly because I thought the pup was more likely to come back if I had one of her canine companions with me and partly because I didn't fancy my chances of finding my way back to the house on my own even though there were a couple of vague paths that I'd followed when walking the dogs throughout the week.

Off we trudged into the wood along one of these paths, me calling pup's name at intervals and trying not to imagine murderers and rapists behind every tree trunk. We got to a point where it felt like the trees were starting to thin out and I remember thinking that I didn't remember a clearing on this path and we must have gone wrong somewhere when the dog with me slowed right down and started to resist going forward. I tried to jolly her along - while my stomach suddenly dropped like a stone - and she started growling, a really low serious rumbling growl. By this time I was practically shitting myself. I tried shining the torch ahead but the beam just sort of bounced back off the darkness if that makes sense? I got the sense of something - or somethings - moving but just sinuous deeper black shapes against the blackness and always on the periphery of vision. (The hairs on my arms are standing up again just remembering how completely and utterly terrified I was. I have honestly never known a feeling like it.)

At this point the dog sank right down, still growling, hackles up and refused to budge. I muttered something like "Jesus, you have got to be kidding me" and this ugly gurgling inhuman sort of voice hissed, right up close as if someone was right next to me "don't say that name". At the same time there was a horrible snickering sort of laugh. I cant express how utterly petrified I was. I can't remember having any coherent thoughts apart from the word "evil". That's the only clear thing I can remember. Me and the dog were frozen to the spot with pure fear. Then a different voice, really commanding, said "GO. BACK." That sounded more in my head but echoey, where the others had sounded out in the air IYSWIM?

Wherever it came from it did the trick. Me & the dog turned and belted back through the woods. She basically towed me, I just clung onto her lead stumbling to keep up and sobbing with fear. I lost the torch somewhere on that wild run but there was no way I was stopping to find it. How I didn't run blindly into a tree I'll never know, she guided me I guess. I can remember thinking desperately that I mustn't let go of her lead or "they" would get me.

When we got back to the garden she suddenly stopped - I did fall over her this time, onto my hands and knees - turned around and started snarling, proper teeth bared, rabid-looking snarls, back at the trees and the darkness. I thought I heard the snickering again but the blood was pounding in my ears so hard I can't be sure. I scrambled up and ran to the back door and she followed me but backing and snarling all the way as if holding something at bay. Oh, and the chicken shed was banging and thumping again. I got the back door open, me and her belted in, I slammed home every bolt behind us. The other dogs left behind were staring at the door and growling too with their hackles up and when I saw all three of them, puppy included, acting like that I started to cry properly because I honestly thought I was trapped in some horror film nightmare and was going to die. I don't know - I still don't know - what the black shape was that ran past me out of the house and triggered all of this because the puppy was right there in the kitchen.

Anyway I made sure every door and window was locked and bolted, I turned on every light in the house, I wandered round mumbling all sorts of weird half-religious half-spiritual shit to ward off evil spirits. Gradually the dogs settled down and stopped growling, and eventually stopped glancing at the door. Funnily enough I didn't sleep for one second that night and I rang my DH and begged him to come over the last couple of days. I know I didn't dream it because I was covered in scratches from running through the woods and had grazed hands from where I fell over the dog in the garden.

Nothing like that has happened before or since and I hope it never, ever does. It was the single most horrible, terrifying experience of my entire life.
