To think boiled potatoes are shite?

Apart from beautiful new ones...Cheshire's preferably.

Other than that, boiled potatoes are just evil.

I live for roast potatoes, mashed with butter and salt, chips, wedges...baked....all my faves.

But put a big boiled potato on my plate...then...no. Just no.

DH loves them. I usually cook so never make them unless there are nice new potatoes available.

He's cooking now...chicken breasts and fucking boiled potatoes.

AIBU? I don't know if he's attempting a gravy or anything.

As an Irish person I find this thread offensive Wink. Boiled spud, sea salt and proper butter = heaven!

weemouse · 14/09/2016 10:35

The only time boiled potatoes are ever acceptable is when they are featuring in a raclette dinner, where they are smothered in melty cheese.

MewlingQuim · 14/09/2016 10:36

Depends on the variety of potato, surely?

Charlottes and Pink Fir Apple are nice boiled, but maris piper or king Edwards should always be made into yummy chips Smile

Fine with gravy or some sauce imo.

If you want mashed & that's not what the cook is doing-do them yourself!

ExcuseMyEyebrows · 14/09/2016 10:38

I'm I the only one who think new potatoes taste vile?

No Edmund you're not the only one. New potatoes in their skins taste very bitter to me.

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 14/09/2016 10:38

A friend of mine used to invite me round for tea, and give me boil in the bag fish with boiled potatoes and chunks of boiled carrots?

Why, just why?

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 14/09/2016 10:41

We used to have boiled spuds all the time when I was a kid - they always get mashed now.

Anyway, I love spuds any way you can think of them. That includes boiled. Mmmmm spuds. And with butter I could eat them all day.

Ditsy4 · 14/09/2016 10:42

OP is in oz so may not get them. I was going to say Jersey's and yes if you eat them in Jersey they are better. Think they sell the 2nds to the mainlandWink

I agree Violet.i would get up and mash yours. Love spring onion chopped through too.
Diced and tossed in olive oil, herbs and garlic finished in the oven. Yum! Paprika instead of herbs good too.
I make great roasties.
DH makes mashed potato ...boils potato, get masher mashes them plonks on plate.
No butter, no milk nothing. Yuk! Tell him time and again so I get in there before they get to the plate now.

HallowedMimic · 14/09/2016 10:42

I think you just don't get good boiling potatoes in England (possibly the UK).

In Ireland the spuds are amazing. My children eat them by the bucket load. They have a lovely, earthy, buttery taste.

But then I remember the days of up-ending a pot of boiled potatoes onto the middle of the dinner table, and everyone just grabbing their own. And peeling them (at the table) if desired! Grin

scallopsrgreat · 14/09/2016 10:43

You're not wrong OP. Boiled potatoes are the pits.

Not that fond of new potatoes either (have to have lashings of butter and chives/parsley/salt/pepper - pretty much anything to take away the taste).

I blame primary school. Got them all the time and they were revolting.

Liiinoo · 14/09/2016 10:44

YANBU if you live in the UK where potatoes are pretty bland unless you cook them with tasty oils or butter. I cannot remember the last time i cooked plain potatoes here.

However when I am in Ireland the carb of choice would be a delicious bowl of Irish Queens steamed in their skins and placed on the table with butter and salt. Truly the food of the gods.

Uiscebeatha85 · 14/09/2016 10:46

YABVU - all spuds are lovely.

am Irish though so feel free to disregard my tuppence worth

toastymarshmallow · 14/09/2016 10:48

Boiled spuds with some proper butter is comfort at its best.

Growing up with a Grandad that grew potatoes probably has something to do with it. :o

liz70 · 14/09/2016 10:48

Boiled spuds must be new (Charlottes are particularly good - sod overrated Jersey Royals) and lightly cooked, skins intact. Serve with butter or olive oil and fresh ground salt and pepper. Yum.

DH has an aunt who is a dreadful cook over my dead body will I ever eat a meal there again. She once served big chunks of soft, overcooked, soggy, boiled potatoes, 1950s school dinner style. Euurrggh. Envy

Kione · 14/09/2016 10:49

I love them with lots of olive oil and salt.

ditsy4 my DP does mash like that too, I add olive oil and salt and mix it all up and it becomes delicious.

Jellybean83 · 14/09/2016 10:53

I do love a Jersey Royal with tons of butter.

Cackleberry4 · 14/09/2016 11:00

They take me back to school dinners. Shudder.

Creativemode · 14/09/2016 11:06

I quite like boiled potatoes, especially with the skin on. I'd eat them with minted lamb chops and gravy.

They're not my favourite, neither is mash, but they're ok.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 14/09/2016 11:09

We have boiled potatoes sometimes, but usually with a stew or something, so they can be mashed into the gravy. Pre-mashed spud with butter often becomes too sloppy to soak up the gravy properly; so a generally boiled spud is better.

However, if there's no gravy then I totally agree with you - nothing worse than a bag of boiled starch!

Caffeinator · 14/09/2016 11:10

YANBU

MrsJayy · 14/09/2016 11:10

They are just meh i hardly ever have them dh likes them so i just put his to the side and mash them im not keen on butter dripping down them like dh does

Homebird8 · 14/09/2016 11:13

The only use for boiled potatoes is potato salad. My kids don't know you can eat them plain.
